POISSON DISTRIBUTION

Mean = m

Standard deviation =

Using table

Cumulative Poisson probabilities table gives cumulative probabilities.

Example:

Telephones call arrive randomly at a switchboard, one a minute on average. What are the probabilities that 6 calls will be received in a period of 5 minutes?

Solution:

p(6 or fewer random events when m=5) =

p(5 or fewer random events when m=5) =

p(6 random events when m = 5)

m
