        Heat? Producing? Sun?

        Can Willy re-start the sun?

JSW - The Sun Is No Longer Producing Heat

By N.Aldridge

Based on Jet Set Willy by Matthew Smith

The plot
--------

After all Willy's adventures, after all the remakes, after all the hacks, it is now the end of the sun's long life. (Had enough). Soon the sun will die and explode, engulfing the earth and destroying all life. (He's REALLY had enough). Only Willy can save the planet, by finding 255 objects that will... well, actually exactly how collecting 255 objects will re-start the sun is a mystery. It just will.

- or is the above simply a metaphor? Is the sun REALLY about to die? Or is something wrong with Willy? Can he turn his frown upside down?

        Can Willy be happy again?

        Joy? Experiencing? Willy?

The rooms
---------

I used the JSW editor by John Elliot (http://www.seasip.demon.co.uk/Jsw/jswed.html) on this game, so I was finally able to design guardians!

8 minutes until darkness
------------------------

If the sun were to 'go out', we wouldn't know about it for 8 minutes, because this is how long light takes to reach us from the sun. I like the 'almost' 3-d effect of this room's structures.

Life Form Ends
--------------

The whole mood of this game is depressing. Named after a Future Sound Of London track, from the album 'Lifeforms'. Nature doesn't have any squares, so I put in nothing but squares.

The sky is blue (and so are you)
--------------------------------

One of the colour / rhyming names. Blue being glum, following the sad theme of the game. Also tried to make this room as symmetrical as possible.

Knots : only in >2 dimensions.
------------------------------

The title page of Jet Set Willy had the impossible triangle. I wanted to put the impossible cricket stumps in this game. These optical illusions work because you are translating 3 dimensions onto just 2 dimensions. And in a 2 dimensional universe, knots are not possible. (I think).

Only a few bacteria survive...
------------------------------

This end of the world is so bad, even the cockroaches die out! One of my few original ideas.

Clown's aren't funny
--------------------

Ooh, a bit controversial? There is one very difficult, and one very easy way through this screen. The colours were selected to have a circus feel.

"Warp" 2 - the zoom tube in/out
-------------------------------

I deliberate made this game non-mapable for a few screens. I put the word 'Warp' in the names of all screens that broke the mapping rules. I intentionally went for a monochrome feel for this room. Don't try and get the object at first, it'll become obvious how to get it.

The sky is pink (I need a drink)
--------------------------------

As good an excuse as any.

This shouldn't happen
---------------------

And I don't know why it does. Any ideas? (Something to do with multiple arrows?) E-mail me at nickswebshite@hotmail.com if you can answer this.

The sky is green (It is obscene)
--------------------------------

	Very garish colours! Leave quickly!

C64 graphics & Spectrum graphics
--------------------------------

I'm sorry, but the Commodore 64 had really horrible, blocky graphics. So I made the top platforms blocky and brown.

A complete lack of purpose
--------------------------

This whole game is really uplifting, isn't it?

Half hearted attempt at a tree
------------------------------

I had to tone this room down - in it's original incarnation is was almost impossible to complete.

Destructive capability
----------------------

Those rockets are flying to destroy the world...

Are we here?
------------

After the Orbital track, from the album 'Snivilisation'. Also, I imagine all the guardians in this room asking this question.

The nth re-iteration
--------------------

I just like the look of this screen.

"Warp" 1 (bad planning)
-----------------------

Actually, this was planned, but it doesn't look like it.

Pixel imperfect
---------------

Because you have to be pixel perfect. Can you guess whose face is going up and down? Clues : a female singer. Her first album came out in 1990. Recently had a Breakdown. I fancy her rotten. I took a picture of her and converted it to a monochrome 16*16 sprite. Answer below...

R:Tape loading error
--------------------

I just wanted to do a room that had a spectrum screen inside it. There is more to this screen than meets the eye. I honestly think that I was hypnotised by those yellow and blue bars, I was definitely addicted to the loading noises and the little tunes you could hear in them. Sad, I know.

gnisrever si yportnE
--------------------

I think this is my only non-central rope. See 'JSW Stupid' for what the 'anab' reference on the object means.

misery guts
-----------

I wanted to call this 'Temper Tantrum' because that's what the ghost is having, but 'misery guts' followed the down-beat theme of the game.

Mode : Standby
--------------

Mode : Ready
------------

The switch room
---------------

A puzzle for you to solve. Easy, huh?

Newton : wrong
--------------

I don't like Sir Isaac Newton. I have many reasons, some of which I give in my novel, not published yet. (He's wrong because Willy 'hovers' in this room.)

The sky is red (it's time 4 bed)
--------------------------------

	Quite a tricky screen.

There's no reason for a castle.
-------------------------------

I just wanted to put a castle in the game, but it doesn't fit the game's theme. So there's no reason for a castle.

Why is there a castle here?
---------------------------

I've answered this, but note the miserable face on the left. Aren't my windows cool? No? Oh well, I tried.

This is one crap castle.
------------------------

This screen will fool you at least once.

drat!
-----

Hey, you shouldn't be able to see this screen!

The castle's on fire!
---------------------

And a good thing too, because it shouldn't be in this game in the first place!

While you're down there...
--------------------------

I wanted to make a ramp out of as many colours as possible. Also a vague reference to oral sex.

Trust games
-----------

The miserable face took ages. Do you trust me enough to jump down that gap?

Rock bottom
-----------

The lowest screen of the game, and indicative of Willy's state of mind.

Not enough space to type the nam
--------------------------------

I find it difficult to get past the disappearing face. Guessed who it is? American? Has a slightly weird first name?

"Warp" room 3 - uninspired
--------------------------

It isn't a very good screen, so I'll just mention that I'm very happy with my little top hat guardians.

...but Metal Gear Solid doesn't
-------------------------------

It is entirely possible to get the object without dying. The green things are supposed to be Playstation 2s, and the name comes from the fact that the end of Metal Gear Solid doesn't work on the PS2.

TTiiiimmesstttrrrreettccchhh
----------------------------

This room runs in two speeds.

The zoom tube
-------------

The zoom tuber
--------------

The zoom tubest
---------------

	Fairly straightforward rooms. Well, perhaps.

"Warp" 4 - Dup moor en t'panat
------------------------------

A reference to my 3rd JSW game. The face? Mariah Carey. Did you get it? Then buy yourself a flap jack as a reward.

Gravity still works
-------------------

I've had one idea in each of my JSW games of which I've been very proud. Once you've worked out the trick to collecting all the objects without dying, it seems very obvious.

Cartag- cortog- carteg- Map room
--------------------------------

This is what the game map looks like.

Garish and hard on the eyes
---------------------------

Not a very exciting room. I was very pleased with how my 'bat' guardian came out.

The sky is yellow. So what?
---------------------------

I couldn't fit a rhyme for yellow in and I figured that people playing this would expect a rhyme, so I just said "So what?"

It's the quiet 1s u have 2 watch
--------------------------------

Have you worked out the trick to this room yet? It is completely fair, but doesn't seem it.

pointless
---------

utterly pointless
-----------------

tedious
-------

are you listening to me?
------------------------

why not?
--------

These screens speak for themselves. But hopefully not for the game. :-)
