Against All Odds

I was resigned to my fate. My parents reluctantly brought me to St. Hilda's Secondary School to purchase my uniform and books. Upon reaching home, the phone rang and it was a call from Victoria School. We went down to Victoria School and I secured a place there. We could not redeem some of the cash which we used to buy books in St Hilda's Secondary School. While we were at Victoria School, we met a family who had just transferred their son from Anglican High School to Victoria School. We almost wanted to rush down to Anglican High School to appeal again but decided against it as I might risk losing my place in Victoria School.

In Secondary 1, Miss Tan Geok Choo, my Mathematics teacher formerly from Woodsville Secondary School, scolded me when I got most of my assignment answers wrong! She made insulting remarks like "I do not think you will ever do well for the rest of your life!" and it hurts me. I was more than determined to prove her wrong. When I was in Secondary 4, in a mid-year examination, I scored 93% to be among the top 5 students for Mathematics in school. After I left for college, I learnt that she became the Head of "Mathematics" department. She indirectly gave me the driving force to do well.
