Author : Michael Crichton
I remembered in 1995, when I was in Secondary 3, my English language teacher Miss Ng Kiew Ling told us that her
favourite author was Michael Crichton. I never really had interest in novels then and the only books I read were
non-fiction. When I was little, I like fairy tale storybooks by Ruth Mannings but since then, I never had a favourite
author. My first Michael Crichton's novel was "Jurassic Park". After that, I started looking for his novels and in 2 years, I
read all the books he wrote. I particularly love "Sphere" and later "Timeline". Michael Crichton writes intelligently, realistically
and captivatingly. His novels have great plots and are usually convincingly realistic. Even till now, I always look out for his latest books.
Movie : My Girl
Anna Chlumsky never became famous but yet I always remember the beautiful girl in the movie "My Girl". The movie has a simple plot and Veda
(starred by Chlumsky) was a hypochondriac and her father was a mortician. The movie has its joyous and teary periods, making it well-balanced
and heart-warming. It showed life in its simplest and most innocent, through the eyes of a very young girl. 11-years-old to be precise.
Book : Face-Off
The best novel I ever read, to date, is "Face-Off" which is adapted from the movie starring John Travolta and Nicolas Cage. The novel actually
explored the feelings of being trapped in another's appearance. An FBI agent, in pursuit, of a dangerous criminal ended up having his face swapped with the latter's.
He watched his life, his wife and his career go into the hands of the criminal while he stayed in a secret prison. I read this novel while I was
in the middle of a military exercise in Thailand. I was fighting the commandoes then. The coincidence is that I completed reading the "Face-Off" novel
at 2130hrs (Singapore Time) on 25-02-2001, Sunday, exactly the time the "Face-Off" movie on TV in Singapore ended!
