Zhi the Robber (1)

盜跖(一)



1 LiuXia Ji was Confucius’s friend. His younger brother was notorious Robber Zhi who led nine thousand underlings to go around for robbing, looting and trespassing. He sniffed love, kindness, filial piety to parents and prudence of all time. The gang of bandit terrified local people. The big countries closed the gate of city to keep them away; the small ones had to hand in rice and pay tax as the fee of protection for avoiding loot. Nobody or no group could crack down the source of disorder. People in those countries suffered a lot from it.

柳下季是孔子的朋友。柳下季的弟弟是有名的土匪頭子名叫盜跖。盜跖手下有九千名囉嘍,經常各處流竄,打家劫舍,奪人財物,強姦殺擄,無惡不做。什麼慈悲友愛、孝順父母、慎終追遠等,他都嗤之以鼻,全不放在心上。這批土匪所到之處,百姓都望而生畏。大些的國家就封閉城池,不讓他們進來,小些的國家就只得定時繳稅納糧,交保護費以破財消災。沒有一個真正有實力的人或團體可以抗衡這股亂源,天下百姓都深以為苦。

孔子與柳下季為友,柳下季之弟,名曰盜跖。盜跖從卒九千人,橫行天下,侵暴諸侯。穴室樞戶,驅人牛馬,取人婦女。貪得忘親,不顧父母兄弟,不祭先祖。所過之邑,大國守城,小國入保,萬民苦之。

2 Confucius thought that he must stand out to get ride of the power which causing disorder to the society.

孔子認為自己應該挺身而出,來解決這股不安定的力量。

3 One day, he went to see Liuxia Ji. He told him, “Father should take responsibility for educating his children. Elder brother should be obligated to induce his younger brother to the right way. If father and elder brother can’t do that, the system of family will be of no significance.”

有一天,他去找柳下季。孔子對他說:「做父親的有責任管教他的孩子,做兄長的有義務教導其幼弟。若父親不能管教孩子,兄長不能教導幼弟,那麼我們建立父親、兄長這樣的親戚制度就沒有意義了。

孔子謂柳下季曰:「夫為人父者,必能詔其子;為人兄者,必能教其弟。若父不能詔其子,兄不能教其弟,則無貴父子兄弟之親矣。

4 You are sage while your brother is the head of bandit. You should take responsibility to educate and induce him to get rid of the bane. If you do not do your job, then, I have to go and represent you to persuade and exhort him.”

柳下先生你是社會賢達,而令弟卻為土匪頭。你不能負起教導之責,以除天下之害,我真為你感到羞恥,如果你不能教他改邪歸正,那我只好為你走一趟,去勸勸他了。」

今先生,世之才士也,弟為盜跖,為天下害,而弗能教也,丘竊為先生羞之。丘請為先生往說之。」

5 Liuxia Ji replied, “I feel shameful for it. However, my younger brother never obeyed my father and kept away from my instruction. He never took worldly rules into consideration. What can I do?”

柳下季回答說:「對這件事我是很慚愧,可是如果有人像我弟弟那樣不從父親管教,不聽兄長教導,世俗規矩他全不放在心上,那你又能怎麼辦呢?

柳下季曰:「先生言為人父者必能詔其子,為人兄者必能教其弟,若子不聽父之詔,弟不受兄之教,雖今先生之辯,將奈之何哉﹗

6 Confucius! You don’t know my brother. He is very clever, fraught with tricks. Taking weapon, he can fight. Going into dispute, he can convince you that white is black. He is bad tempered; if he agrees with you, that fine, however, if he thinks something wrong somewhat, he bursts into rage and looses a stream of abuse against you. If I were you, I would not go.”

孔兄啊!你不知道,我弟弟這個人聰明絕頂,鬼腦筋一大堆。武的他能拒敵打仗,文的他可以把黑的說成白的。他的脾氣暴燥,順他的意思還好,稍微不對勁他就會大發雷霆,把你罵的狗血淋頭,我勸你還是不要去的好。」

且跖之為人也,心如涌泉,意如飄風,強足以距敵,辯足以飾非。順其心則喜,逆其心則怒,易辱人以言。先生必無往。」

7 Confucius refused his suggestion and insisted to go. Nothing Liuxia Ji could do but sign and shake head.

孔子不聽柳下季的勸告,堅持要去,柳下季無奈,只得搖頭嘆息不再說什麼了。

8 Yan Hui drove for Confucius, Zigong stood left to be guardian. So, the three set out to see Robber Zhi.

顏回為孔子駕車,子貢站在右邊當侍衛,就這樣師徒三人出發去見盜跖矣!

孔子不聽,顏回為馭,子貢為右,往見盜跖。

9 When Confucius saw the bandits, Robber Zhi with his underlings camped at the east foot of Tai Mountain. The bandit cut off human’s liver and sliced it. They ate it with blood.

孔子的車到達時,盜跖與其匪眾正在泰山東邊山角下紮營休息。這些匪徒取其殺害人的肝,切成細條,連血帶肉的當生魚片吃。

盜跖乃方休卒徒大山之陽,膾人肝而餔之。

10 Stepping down his carriage, Confucius was courteous to tell the receptionist, “Confucius is me. I admired your general of great prestige. So I come specially to visit him.”

孔子下車後很有禮貌地通知接待人員。他說:「我是孔某,聞將軍德高望重,特地前來拜訪。」

孔子下車而前,見謁者曰:「魯人孔丘,聞將軍高義,敬再拜謁者。」

11 Hearing the receptionist, Robber Zhi flied into rage, with eyes like full moon and hair standing up.

接待人員進帳通報,盜跖聽說孔子來了,不由的大發雷霆,眼睛瞪的像初一,十五的月亮,頭髮都氣的豎起來了。

12 Robber Zhi said, “This guy is the hypocrite of Lu – Confucius? You tell him: “You guy make rumor that you can fight and write. You wear the odd cap, tied ox hide belt around your waist. All day you sprout nonsense. Actually, you can’t do anything. You don’t produce and cheat of rice and wine. All but your mouth bewilder the kings.

盜跖說:「這傢伙就是那個魯國的偽君子孔丘嗎?你出去轉告他,就說:『你這個人造謠生事,認為自己文武雙全,戴著那頂古理古怪的帽子,腰裡繫著牛皮帶,整天喋喋不休,胡說一通。身無一技之長,不事生產,騙吃騙喝,全靠一張嘴巴迷惑主上。

13 You give a bad example to the young who all imitate you and engage in nothing. In order to cheat of reputation, you disguise filial piety. You always expect someday to be appointed as high official, so can enjoy richness and high rank. It’s you who make all vanity.

有了這樣的榜樣,年輕人均紛紛效尤,不去從事勞動生產。為了搏取好名聲,假裝成孝順父母、敬愛長上的模樣,以期有朝一日封候作官,享受榮華富貴。社會上所有這些虛浮不實的現象,都是你這個傢伙促成的。

謁者入通。盜跖聞之大怒,目如明星,髮上指冠,曰:「此夫魯國之巧偽人孔丘非邪?為我告之:『爾作言造語,妄稱文、武,冠枝木之冠,帶死牛之脅,多辭繆說,不耕而食,不織而衣,搖唇鼓舌,擅生是非,以迷天下之主,使天下學士不反其本,妄作孝弟,而徼倖於封侯富貴者也。

14 You go out and ask Confucius to piss off, or I will cut off his liver as lunch.”

你出去叫他趕快滾,否則我就切他的肝,來當中飯吃。」

子之罪大極重,疾走歸!不然,我將以子肝益晝餔之膳。』

15 Reluctant to being driven off, he told the receptionist again, “Please tell him that I am Liuxia Ji’s friend. For the sake of his brother, let me see him.”

孔子老遠跑來不甘心就這樣被趕走,他又對接待員說:「請你告訴將軍,我是柳下季的朋友,就請他看他哥哥的面子見我一面吧!」

孔子復通曰:「丘得幸於季,愿望履幕下。」

16 The receptionist had to inform again. When Robber Zhi heard that he was his elder brother’s friend, his attitude softened somewhat. Considering for a while, he said, “Well! Let him in.”

接待人員只得再進帳通報,盜跖聽說是哥哥的朋友,態度就軟了些,想了想說:「好吧!就叫他進來吧!」

謁者復通。盜跖曰:使來前!」

17 Confucius gingerly walked, in the way he had an audience with the king. Robber Zhi, who only likes eating meat of hunk and drinking wine of big bowl, loathes the shit courtesy very much. He flied into an unspoken fury when he saw Confucius bowed, knelt, kowtowed and greeted times.

孔子以晉見國王之禮,戰戰兢兢地走了進去,盜跖一生為盜,講的就是大塊吃肉,大碗喝酒,最討厭這些臭規矩。他看孔子又是鞠躬、又是作揖、三拜九叩心中無名之火又起。

孔子趨而進,避席反走,再拜盜跖。

18 With feet stretching out, handing on his sword, he glared at Confucius and shouted, “Confucius, old guy, now you see me. If I agree with what you say, you are lucky; if not, I will kill you there at once.”

他兩腳一蹬,手按寶劍,眼睛直視著孔子大聲叫道:「丘老頭,你今天到我帳來,如果說的合我意那算你命好,若不合我意,則立刻就將你殺死在案下。」

盜跖大怒,兩展其足,案劍瞋目,聲如乳虎,曰:「丘來前!若所言,順吾意則生,逆吾心則死。」

19 On the moment of speaking, Robber Zhi pulled his sword out and put it on the table. After all, Confucius had been around so he wasn’t frightened by the threat. Standing there, he said calmly, “I heard that there were three ranks of hero whom heaven favors. The first class is the one who is tall and handsome and possesses of stateliness only standing in silence, people are in awe of him.

盜跖的寶劍說時遲那時快,抽了出來,放在桌上,孔子到底是久經場面的人,並沒有被盜跖的恐嚇唬住,他穩穩地站在那心平氣和地對盜跖說:「我聽說天縱英才者有三種不同的等級,最上層者,他是生的英傑挺拔,不說一句話,站在那兒自然就有一種威嚴,人人對他生出敬畏之心。

孔子曰:「丘聞之,凡天下有三德:生而長大,美好無雙,少長貴賤見而皆說之,此上德也;

20 The second rank is the one who learns and works hard after birth. He is learned so nothing can corner him. The third rank is the one who fights bravely, never hesitating in battle. He is calm in directing battle and victory is a piece of cake to him.

中等的能人,他們是靠後天的努力,學識豐碩,見多識廣,什麼事都難不倒他。再次等的能人,他們勇敢善戰,遇事果斷,絕不拖泥帶水,帶起兵來指揮若定,克敵致勝,易如反掌。

知維天地,能辯諸物,此中德也;勇悍果敢,聚眾率兵,此下德也。凡人有此一德者,足以南面稱孤矣。

21 A common people can come to the throne and rule a region as long as he is one of the said ranks. In my view, you are all of the three. You are eight feet and two inches tall, face and eyes beaming, lips red, teeth tidy and white, voice loud. You have a look of emperor, but because there has no sage direct you, you now do as a head of bandit, called Robber Zhi; it is rather pitiful.

一般人只要有任何一種上述的才能,就能稱孤道寡,雄據一方的稱王。我看將軍兼具上述三種才能。身高八尺二寸,面目有光,脣如紅丹,齒如齊貝,音色如鐘,完全是一付帝王之相。只是因為沒有名人指點,今天才落為土匪頭,被人稱為盜跖,實在可惜。

今將軍兼此三者,身長八尺二寸,面目有光,唇如激丹,齒如齊貝,音中黃鐘,而名曰盜跖,丘竊為將軍恥不取焉。

22 If you would like to ask me as your counselor to help you build a country, I, as a minister, with your order, I would acquire a lot of land from Wu, Yue, Qi, Lu, Wei, Jin and Chu. I would help you to build a country covering several hundred li with dozen of thousand in population. Being peer of the dominant king, then, you wouldn’t fight hardily as a guerilla.

如果將軍願意請我當參謀,為你籌劃興國大業,我這個做臣屬的,願意銜命到吳、越、齊、魯、宋、衛、晉、楚等國爭取大批土地,為將軍建立一個幅原數百里,人口數十萬的國家。推將軍為諸侯,與天下諸多霸主平起平坐,從此不用再到處打游擊,興兵動武,那麼辛苦。

23 When you came to throne, you possess of wealth, nobility and glory. You could make your ancestor glorified and ask your relatives to live in your palace to share your good life. Even your ancestor could receive rich sacrifice. With permission by time and environment, this is the cause that sage must do. It also is the direction in which people ask a statesman to lead for social stability.”

將軍得此諸候之位後,榮華富貴集一身,可以光宗耀祖,將諸般親戚接到宮中共享清福,就是先祖也得到一定豐盛的祭祀。這是天下聖賢之士在時空允許下必定去做的事,也是天下百姓為求社會安定企盼政治家們去走的方向。」

將軍有意聽臣,臣請南使吳越,北使章魯,東使宋衛,西使晉楚,使為將軍造大城數百里,立數十萬戶之邑,尊將軍為諸侯,與天下更始,罷兵休卒,收養昆弟,共祭先祖。此聖人才士之行,而天下之願也。」

24 Confucius’s suggestion didn’t relieve Robber Zhi’s fury. He called, “Old guy! Your tricks and words only can cheat the provincial fool. Don’t waste your breathe to me.

盜跖的氣頭並沒有因為孔子這番建議而稍微緩和。他說:「孔老頭!你那套巧言令色的玩意只能騙騙那些沒見過世面的笨蛋,在我面前你還是省省吧!

盜跖大怒曰:「丘來前!夫可規以利而可諫以言者,皆愚陋恆民之謂耳。

25 I am tall, stately and handsome, which I owe to my parents. It has nothing to do with my ability. I know it clearly not need you to remind me. It was said ‘they who praise directly to other’s face is kiss-ass. ’ They are aptest to betray and call your name behind you. As robber, we hate any attempt to engage in internal strife.

我長得高大威嚴、英俊體面,這都是我父母生給我的,跟我的才能沒有什麼關係,這方面不用你說,難道我自己不知道?我聽人說:『喜歡當面稱讚人的,都是馬屁精。』他們也最容易背叛你,在背後罵你。做我們這一行的,最恨的就是窩裡反。

今長大美好,人見而說之者,此吾父母之遺德也。丘雖不吾譽,吾獨不自知邪?且吾聞之,好面譽人者,亦好背而毀之。

26 Just now you suggested me to acquire some land to build a country, and my government and I could live on tax for people. Is it truly a long and stable way?

剛剛你建議我弄些土地,建城立國,靠百姓的稅捐來養我及政府,這種方式難道真的就是長治久安之策嗎?

今丘告我以大城眾民,是欲規我以利而恆民畜我也,安可久長也!

27 Now, I am very comfortable. All land under the sun is my field and I can go anywhere as I like. Why do I give up the big one to get the small? What’s more, Yao and Shun ever were emperors but their offsprings became too poor to live. When Tang and King Wu were emperors, they were proud and showy, but their offsprings all were killed. Is it the benefit of a country which you suggest to make?”

像我現在這樣子多好,我以天下為範圍,想到哪就到哪兒,有什麼道理以大求小呢?再說堯舜都曾做過君王,可是他們的子孫,聽說都窮得無立錐之地;湯武為君時神氣活現,不可一世,可是他們的後輩都被人殺害了。難道這就是你勸我穩定下來,成立邦國的好處嗎?

城之大者,莫大乎天下矣。堯、舜有天下,子孫無置錐之地;湯、武立為天子,而後世絕滅;非以其利大故邪?

28 As I know, in the initial stage of the evolution of human, all people live well without the system of country and government. At that time, animal was everywhere and human was considerably fewer, human had to perch on the tree in order to ward off animal. They picked fruit in day and slept on tree in the evening. So, we call them people of nest.

據我所知,人類初期根本就沒有國家政府這樣的編制,可是大家都過的好好的。那時候禽獸多人少,人類選擇居在樹上,就是為了躲避野獸的緣故; 他們白天撿採些果子吃,晚上就睡在樹上,所以我們稱他們為『有巢氏之民』。

且吾聞之,古者禽獸多而人少,於是民皆巢居以避之。晝拾橡栗,暮栖木上,故命之曰『有巢氏之民』。

29 The primitive people had no clothes. In winter they made fire to warm them with the firewood that was collected in summer. So they were called people of using fire.

原始的人類,他們也無所謂衣服,冬天去寒,就靠夏天收集的乾柴,生個火堆來取暖,所以我們又稱他們為會用火的『知生之民』。

古者民不知衣服,夏多積薪,冬則煬之,故命之曰『知生之民』。

30 Age of Shennong Shi witnessed the utmost level of self-nature development. People slept well and lived happily. The system of family didn’t form yet. Kid only knew his mother and didn’t know how his father looked like. They bred elk for meat and milk. They lived on their own harvest, without any malice to hurt each other.”

到神農氏時人類的自性發展到最高境界,百姓們睡的安穩,活的愉快。家庭制度尚未形成,孩子只知道母親是誰,不知道父親的長相。他們養麋鹿吃其肉,喝其奶,自食其力,衣食無慮,彼此完全沒有相害之心。

神農之世,臥則居居,起則于于。民知其母,不知其父,與麋鹿共處,耕而食,織而衣,無有相害之心。此至德之隆也。

31 When Yellow Emperor was in power, because of his ambition and the different standard of behavior set up by each other, Yellow Emperor fought fiercely against Chiyou in Zhoulu. Both sides took a heavy toll of soldiers. Stability and peace of human society had been spoiled since then.

一直到了黃帝,因為個人野心,道德標準的差異等促使他與蚩尤大戰於涿鹿,雙方折兵損將,死傷無數,人類社會安穩祥和才開始走下坡。

然而黃帝不能致德,與蚩尤戰於涿鹿之野,流血百里。

32 Later Yao and Shun organized government and defined the relation of kin, since then, society started to break up. In the movements in which each individual hoped to find his best location in the society, fight, conflict and looting took place. Tang banished his king and replaced him. King Wu even killed his emperor Jie and established his own dynasty.

後來堯舜等組成政府,確定親屬關係,社會開始分裂。在社會成員企圖佔有其最有利之地位的調整過程中,糾紛,爭戰,搶奪就產生了。湯就是將其君王放逐自己取而代之,武王更是將其老闆紂王殺死後,建立了自己的王朝。

堯、舜作,立群臣;湯放其主,武王殺紂。

33 They gave people an example that the strong bullied the weak and the masses stroke the less. To protect themselves, all nations enforced their military forces. Therefore, as you read, the history after Tang and King Wu was a history of war. Those men who found a country were careerists. Countries under the careerist’s ruling, is there stability under the sun possible?

這樣的模式形成後,天下以強凌弱,以眾擊寡的現實確立。大家為了自保及擴充勢力,都紛紛建立武力,所以你看自湯武以後,歷史成為一部戰爭史。所謂開國元勳,都是些興風作浪的野心家,在這些人的統治下,天下哪裡還有安穩可言?

自是之後,以強陵弱,以眾暴寡。湯、武以來,皆亂人之徒也。

34 Now you learn literature, military art, and improve your eloquence. What’s more, besides you, you enroll a lot of students to impart them your knowledge. They usually are requested to wear the uniform you designed; their daily conduct should comply with your queer regulations. You teach them to cheat of position by lie and misdeed for wealth, rank and honor. These officials often cater for high level official by some eccentric ideas. In consequence, country goes into mess, war happens one after another.

今天你修習文武之道,培養辯論的口才,自己學還不夠,還要收一大堆學生,傳授這些知識、學問。這些人平日穿你設計的儒服,生活行為都要遵守你訂的那些臭規矩,以虛偽不實的言論,行為,謀騙官職,以求榮華富貴。而這些官員經常出些怪點子,以謀長官的歡心,結果弄的天下大亂,戰爭不斷。

今子修文、武之道,掌天下之辯,以教後世。縫衣淺帶,矯言偽行,以迷惑天下之主,而欲求富貴焉,盜莫大於子。

35 You, Confucius, is a really robber. As far as harm is concerned, mine is far from yours. I wonder why people don’t call you Robber Confucius but call me Robber Zhi.

我認真地說你孔老頭才是真正的大盜,論危害天下,我遠不及你,我奇怪社會為什麼不叫你盜丘,反而叫我盜跖呢?

天下何故不謂子為盜丘,而乃謂我為盜跖?

36 By soft words, you cheat Zilu to be your disciple. You ask him to replace helmet with Ru hat and ask him to wrap up sword to learn Confucianism from you. What’s the result? Later Zilu tried to assassinate King Wei but failed. He instead was killed by the death penalty. He was chopped into pieces at executive ground of east gate. Isn’t it your fault that made him went to such destiny? It is you teach him and let him involve into the whirl of politic conflict.

你以甜言蜜語騙子路當你的門生,要他脫掉鋼盔換上儒帽,收起他的寶劍跟你學儒學之道。天下人都以為你孔老頭能收服這樣一位剛猛的武者佩服不已,可是結果怎麼呢?子路後來欲殺衛君,舉事不成,被衛國處以極刑,在東門刑場被剁成肉醬。子路有這樣的下場,不都是你教導他,讓他深入政治爭紛的旋渦所造成的嗎?

子以甘辭說子路而使從之,使子路去其危冠,解其長劍,而受教於子,天下皆曰︰『孔丘能止暴禁非。』其卒之也,子路欲殺衛君而事不成,身菹於衛東門之上,是子教之不至也。

37 You flatter yourself that you are learned and sainted. However, your destiny is not better than others. You were banished twice by King Lu and house-arrested in Wei, down and out in Qi but nobody cared you. You were besieged between Chen and Cai, which was notorious under sun. It is obvious that your theory is out of place to people. In my eyes your theory actually is nothing.

你自認為是學豐識廣,品格端正的聖人,可是你自己遭遇,也好不到哪兒去!你兩次被魯王放逐,在衛國被軟禁,在齊國窮困潦倒沒人理你,被圍於陳蔡之間更是天下皆知的糗事。可見你的那些理論,並不適合大家的味口,在我看來,你的那些理論實際上一毛不值。

子自謂才士聖人邪﹖則再逐於魯,削跡於衛,窮於齊,圍於陳蔡,不容身於天下。子教子路菹此患,上無以為身,下無以為人,子之道豈足貴邪?

38 You see. Yellow Emperor is the most honorable man by your Confucian. But he couldn’t have complete virtue yet. He launched a war against Chiyou in Zhuolu. In the battlefield, soldiers’ corpus of both sides lay everywhere, blood was streaming like the current in river.

你看,黃帝是你們儒家最崇敬的人了,可是黃帝尚不能達到德全的地步,他在涿鹿地方發起的蚩尤之戰,雙方戰士橫屍遍野,血流成河。

世之所高,莫若黃帝,黃帝尚不能全德,而戰於涿鹿之野,流血百里。

39 It was not kind that Yao killed his first son, Danzhu. It is not filial that Shun banished his father Aoshou. Yu didn’t know how to conserve health because he was too moiling and paralyzed his half body.

堯殺長子丹朱,稱不上慈。舜將自己父親聱瞍放逐,也不能說真的孝。禹不顧全身子,忙碌勞累地造成自己半身不遂,是不懂得養身。

40 Tang banished his emperor and King Wu killed his boss Jie. They are treasonous underling. King Weng was detained in Youli for his offense to King Zhou because he didn’t know how to fit himself to the environment.

湯將其主君放逐;武王將其老闆紂殺死,都是叛逆的反將。文王得罪商紂,被紂囚禁在羑里,是不知適應環境。

堯不慈,舜不孝,禹偏枯,湯放其主,武王伐紂,文王拘羑里。

41 The said six persons are the leaders who your Confucian sang the praises of. Nevertheless, let’s analyze them and find that they make use of interest to carry out their policy, instead of sincerity to move people; when they dealt with the affairs with underling or high level official, they would not show their real intent, and instead, they held back his feeling and spoke only what they thought others like to hear.

以上六人都是你們儒家歌功頌德的領袖人物,然而仔細分析,他們都或多或少地以利誘為手段,推行其政策,不是以真情去感動人心,他們在與長官或部屬週旋時,都強忍其情緒,不能知無不言,言無不盡的以真實面目與人相處。

此六子者,世之所高也。孰論之,皆以利惑其真而強反其情性,其行乃甚可羞也。

42 In my eye, the official affectation is very shameful, not better than our bandits who are frank and open.

這些官場上的虛情假意,在我看來都是極其可恥的,還不如我們土匪一根直腸子來的痛快。

43 The most honorable sage by your Confucian is so-so in my eyes. Boyi and Shuqi, the two stupid guys, gave up the position in Guzhu to look for sainted king in Zhou. As a result, they got disappointed and starved to death in Shouyang Mountain. Their corpus even weren’t buried.

你們儒家最尊敬的賢能人士在我看來也都不怎麼樣,伯夷叔齊這兩位糊塗蛋,他們丟下孤竹國的職務,跑到周國去找什麼明王,結果失望之餘,隱居到首陽山,被活活地餓死,屍骨都不得入土為安。

世之所謂賢士:伯夷、叔齊。伯夷、叔齊辭孤竹之君,而餓死於首陽之山,骨肉不葬。

44 Bao Jao also was an odd fish. Zigong said to him, “I heard that he, who didn’t serve for his king, should not step on the land of the king and he, who stained his king, not receive the salary from the king.” Which stimulated him, so he climbed and stayed on the tree and therefore, starved to death.

鮑焦也是莫名其妙的怪人,他為了子貢一句激將話--:“吾聞之,非其世者不生其利,汙其君者,不履其土。” ---,結果他老兄爬到樹上,沒吃沒喝地,飢渴而死。

鮑焦飾行非世,抱木而死。

45 Shentu Di didn’t get response from his king on his persuasion. He suddenly held a big stone to jump into river, becoming food of fish and turtle.

申徒狄勸諫主上不獲回應,突然就懷石投河自盡,成為魚蝦王八的食物。

申徒狄諫而不聽,負石自投於河,為魚鱉所食。

46 Jiezi Tui was loyal to follow King Weng. When the king in distress was hungry, Jiezi Tui cut off a piece of his leg meat to feed him. Later King Wen, however, dismissed him for his petty fault. Jiezi Tui was so angry that he burned himself.

介子推追隨文王一片忠心,在文王落難,沒有東西吃的時候,他將自己大腳上的肉割下來給文王吃。後來文王因細故將之開除,子推氣得投入火堆中,自焚而死;

介子推至忠也,自割其股以食文公,文公後背之,子推怒而去,抱木而燔死。

47 Weisheng’s death was unworthy most. He had a date with a girl under the bridge pillar but the girl didn’t come. The man of love infatuation, however, still waited under the bridge. He consequently was drowned on the tide.

尾生這傢伙就更是死的不值得,他與一位女子相約在橋柱下相會,可是時間過了這位女子沒有出現,我們這位癡心漢,卻在橋柱下傻等,結果漲潮時被活活地淹死。

尾生與女子期於梁下,女子不來,水至不去,抱梁柱而死。

48 The said six persons are the sages who your Confucius advocates. Tell you the truth; they don’t know how to cherish life. They are wretches as wild dog or beggar. How are they worth being learned from?

以上六者都是你們儒家鼓吹為賢達之士,可是認真地說,都是些不知愛惜生命,如野狗乞丐般的可憐蟲,哪裡值得尊敬,學習?

此六子者,無異於磔犬流豕、操瓢而乞者,皆離名輕死,不念本養壽命者也。

49 Prince Bigan and Wu Zixu were loyal ministers in your eyes. What’s their destiny? Wu Zixu committed suicide by jumping into river; Bigan was heart-ripped, which became laughingstock in chat of leisure time. So, the two so-called loyal ministers are unworthy of being imitated also.

你們所謂忠臣就屬王子比干及伍子胥了,他們兩位的下場又怎麼樣呢?伍子胥投江而死,比干則被剖心,成為人們茶餘飯後的笑柄。所以這兩位所謂忠臣實在也沒有什麼值得效法的。

世之所謂忠臣者,莫若王子比干、伍子胥。子胥沉江,比干剖心,此二子者,世謂忠臣也,然卒為天下笑。自上觀之,至於子胥、比干,皆不足貴也。

50 What you want to tell me today, excepting the other space, such as god and ghost, which I could not know, in this world is not more than the said things.

你今天想要告訴我的,除了神鬼等另一個空間的事,我沒有辦法知道,其他有關人間的事,大概也就是上述幾樣東西了。

丘之所以說我者,若告我以鬼事,則我不能知也;若告我以人事者,不過此矣,皆吾所聞知也。

51 So what? Is my analysis clear? So you don’t have to waste your time to tell me anything anymore.

怎麼樣?我還分析的清楚吧!所以,你也就不必費神,再向我嘮叨了。

52 Now that you are here, and I am in a good humor today. Let me tell you something about people.

既然你來了,我今天心情也不錯,讓我來告訴你一些人之常情吧!

53 Eyes like to see nice things; ears like to hear good voice; mouth likes to eat delicious food; brain keeps thinking all the day. What you emphasize: not seeing, listening and thinking anything out of etiquette are conducts actually diverging human’s feeling.

眼睛就是喜歡看美好的事物,耳朵就是想聽好聽的聲音,嘴巴就是想吃可口的美食,心就是一天到晚瞎想沒完沒了,什麼非禮勿視、勿聽、勿想等都是背情之舉。

今吾告子以人之情,目欲視色,耳欲聽聲,口欲察味,志氣欲盈。

54 People of long life are a hundred years old; people of medium life are about eighty; people of short life are about sixty. In the life, the feeling of illness, death, sadness, and worry takes up most of the time. Time of real joy and laugh is four or five days at most in a month.

一個人的壽命長的百歲,中的八十,差些的約六十幾歲,在這個有生之年中病痛、死喪、憂患等佔據了大部份的時間,真正開懷大笑、心情愉快者一個月裡最多有這麼四、五天罷了。

人上壽百歲,中壽八十,下壽六十,除病瘦死喪憂患,其中開口而笑者,一月之中不過四五日而已矣。

55 Therefore, life is bitter, which is destiny. Time and space are limitless; comparing these, our life is transient, like a swift horse galloping over a gap. In such limited time and space, all conducts that not applying him to accomplish his ideals and not treasuring and conserve health, are not in accordance with the requirements of human nature, self-nature and Tao.

所以人生是苦,這是宿命。天地的時空無限,人的壽命與之相比極其短暫,就像是快馬飛馳經過一個縫隙似的一閃即過,在這樣有限的時空裡,凡是不知專心貫注傾力完成其理想,不知愛惜生命,保養身子的信念,都是不合人性、本性、道的要求。

天與地無窮,人死者有時,操有時之具,而托於無窮之間,忽然無異騏驥之馳過隙也。不能說其志意、養其壽命者,皆非通道者也。

56 Old guy! What you advocate and teach is what I throw away, so you say no more and piss off! I don’t want to hear your tricky and fictitious words designed for cheating of fame, honor, wealth and rank. These don’t conform to human nature and truth; I don’t want to waste my time here.”

孔老頭!你提倡教導的那些東西都是我要丟掉的,所以你也不必再說什麼了趕快滾吧!我不想聽你那些為鑽營功名富貴而設計出來的詐巧虛偽的論述。這些不合人性,不符真理的東西,我不願意再浪費我的時間。」

丘之所言,皆吾之所棄也,亟去走歸,無復言之!子之道,狂狂汲汲,詐巧虛偽事也,非可以全真也,奚足論哉!」

57 At that moment, Confucius was embarrassed to the most. Sweat dripping from forehead, he stood there and could say nothing. Robber Zhi asked him to leave, he felt as if disburdening. He bowed courteously and minced slightly out of the camp.

孔子站在那兒臉一陣紅、一陣白的,汗珠不斷地自額頭滴下,盜跖要他走,他真有如釋重負之感,孔子禮貌地鞠躬後輕輕地碎步走出帳外。

58 In the carriage he still was depressively in the mood of listening to Robber Zhi’s moralistic. His eyesight was dispersed and face was pasty. On the way back, he seemed to be in a trance and lost bridle from his hands three times. His body leaned against handle, wordless, head drooping, breath weak.

上了車精神還是停留在聽盜跖教訓的沮喪情緒之中,目光散渙、臉如死灰。沿途孔子整個人緊靠著把手低頭不語,大氣都沒有喘一聲,恍恍惚惚地手中的轡就掉了三次。

孔子再拜趨走,出門上車,執轡三失,目芒然無見,色若死灰,據軾低頭,不能出氣。

59 When their carriage passed east gate of Lu, they happened to see Liuxia Ji. Liuxia Ji asked Confucius, "I haven’t seen you for a few days. You look tired and seem to endure the hardships of a long journey. Do you go to see my young brother Robber Zhi?"

車子回到魯國東門外正巧遇見柳下季。柳下季對孔子說:「這幾天都沒看見你,看你們三人風塵僕僕地是不是去見我弟弟盜跖了?」

歸到魯東門外,適遇柳下季。柳下季曰:「今者闕然,數日不見,車馬有行色,得微往見跖邪?」

60 Looking up to the sky, Confucius signed, “Yes! We go and see him.”

孔子仰天長嘆了一說:「是啊!我們跑了一趟。」

孔子仰天而嘆曰:「然!」

61 Liuxia Ji asked again, “Is my brother as the same as what I have told you? He must have told off you and doesn’t change his mind eventually.”

柳下季接著說:「我弟弟是不是像我說的那樣,將你好好地數落了一陣,絲毫也沒有改變他的看法呢?」

柳下季曰:「跖得無逆汝意若前乎?」

62 Confucius said, “Yes! It is as what you have said. He has told off me but it is all I ask for. Why did I not weigh my ability to touch tiger's beard self-assertively. I was almost bitten by the tiger.”

孔子說:「對!你說的沒錯!他是好好地教訓了我一頓,不過這些都是我自找的,誰叫我自作多情不自量力地跑到虎頭上去撥動虎鬚,差一點沒有被老虎一口吃掉。」

孔子曰:「然。丘所謂無病而自灸也。疾走料虎頭,編虎須,幾不免虎口哉!」
