田子方(二)
1 Wenbo Xuezi traveled to the State of Qi. When he passed the State of Lu, some local scholars wanted to see him. He told his underling, “I don’t want to see them. I heard that scholars in this place only focus on the practice of appearance, not on the inner practice. Such scholars have much etiquette. I may as well do not meet them.”
溫伯雪子有事到齊國去。當他路過魯國時，魯國有些學者想登門求見。溫伯雪子告訴他的門人：「我不想見他們。我聽說，中原地方的學者，只著重禮儀等表面的功夫，而不著重於內心的修養。這樣的學者，規矩肯定是一大堆，我還是不見為妙。」
溫伯雪子適齊，舍於魯。魯人有請見之者，溫伯雪子曰：「不可。吾聞中國之君子，明乎禮義而陋於知人心。吾不欲見也。」
2 After accomplishing his work in the State of Qi, Wenbo Xuezi returned and passed the State of Lu again. This time the scholars asked to meet him again. He told his underling, “These scholars want to meet me for times. I guess that they maybe want to tell me something. Now that I am free, let me hear what they are going to say. Perhaps it is helpful to me.”
溫伯雪子自齊辦完事後，又再經過魯國。這回又有一些魯國學者求見。溫伯雪子對其門人說：「這些人三番五次地想見我，想必是有什麼話要告訴我。反正閑著沒事，我就聽聽他們的高論，這或許對我能有所幫助也說不定。」
至於齊，反舍於魯，是人也又請見。溫伯雪子曰：「往也蘄見我，今也又蘄見我，是必有以振我也。」
3 After meeting them in the living room, he sighed and shook head when returned to the inner room. Next day, when returning from the living room, he shook head and signed again. Feeling curious about the reaction, his underling asked, “During these two days, you shake head and sign after meeting those customers. What has happened on earth?”
可是溫伯雪子在前廳見客回來後，卻一直搖頭歎息。到了第二天，自前廳見客回來，還是一樣的搖頭歎息。他的門人見到這種情形，覺得很是奇怪，便問溫伯雪子：「這兩天來，每次您自前廳見客回來後就不斷的搖頭歎息，這究竟是怎麼回事呀？」
出而見客，入而嘆。明日見客，又入而嘆。其僕曰：「每見之客也，必入而嘆，何耶？」
4 Wenbo Xuezi replied, “Last time I mentioned that these guys just focus on the practice of appearance, not on the inner practice. This time I persuade myself to meet them. I suppose that perhaps it is not as bad as I think. However, things have happened in these two days have proved that my original thinking is right. They have much etiquette, which have made me very uneasy. They wear serious faces to keep impressive manner. In my eyes, all their attitudes are trying to conceal their ignorance only. They exhort me to follow by a lot of things about benevolence, righteousness, loyalty and credit as if they were my father. Sometime they instruct me what to do in the state of ceremonies as if I were their son.
溫伯雪子回答說：「上回我就說，這些人只重外表，不重內心的修練，沒有什麼好見的。這回我想試試，也許不完全如我想像的那麼糟。可是這兩天所發生的事，證明我早先的推斷是正確的。這些人見到我時，規矩一大堆，弄得我好不拘束。他們的臉拉得長長的，看起來是蠻有威儀的樣子。可是在我看來，這都不外是一些隱藏自己的無知把戲。這些人又搬出了一大堆的仁義忠信的道理來規勸我，就像我是他的兒子。有時他們又教訓我，認為在禮儀之邦應該如何才算正確; 對如我這樣的蠻荒野人，他們說話的語氣，又好像是我的老爸。
5 Talking with them are tedious so I can’t help shaking head and sighing. On one hand, I regret that I have wasted my time to talk with them. On the other hand, I feel it is a pity that they are ignorant.”
跟這些人談話真是索然無味，因此才搖頭歎息。一方面是後悔，白白浪費了自己寶貴的時間，一方面也是可憐他們的愚蠢與無知。」
曰：「吾固告子矣：中國之民，明乎禮義而陋乎知人心。昔之見我者，進退一成規、一成矩，從容一若龍、一若虎。其諫我也似子，其道我也似父，是以嘆也。」
6 The third days, Confucius visited him too. After all, Confucius was learned and well in practice. He seldom talked about those benevolence, righteousness, loyalty and credit during the meeting. He just did some small talks and then left. Zilu, who accompanied him, asked curiously, “The purpose you want to meet Wenbo Xuezi is to confirm some academic issues. Why do you discuss nothing and leave?”
第三天，孔子也跑去見了溫伯雪子。孔先生到底是學問淵博，修養到家。他與溫伯雪子見面時，絕少談什麼仁義忠信等大道理，只是噓寒問暖，聊些家常就出來了。隨行的子路好奇地問道：「老師您拜會溫伯雪子的目的，是為了印證您的許多學術論點，可是為什麼見了面，又什麼都不談，就離開了呢？」
仲尼見之而不言。子路曰：「吾子欲見溫伯雪子久矣。見之而不言，何邪？」
7 Confucius replied, “To a man of good practice, like him, a glance and a pose are enough to express his practice. It doesn’t need to talk to the details.”
孔子說：「像溫伯先生這樣的高人，只需一個眼神、一個姿勢就足以表達其修為了，又哪須要說什麼話呢？」
仲尼曰：「若夫人者，目擊而道存矣，亦不可以容聲矣！」
