人間世（三）
1 The prince of the King of Weiling was a notorious hooligan whom everyone was afraid of.
衛靈公的太子是有名的小流氓，人人見到都怕。
2 Invited unexpectedly by the King of Weiling to be the teacher of the prince, Yanhe was frightened at a loss. He knew that Qu Boyu had been stayed long time in the State of Wei and he was an elder with fine practice. Yanhe therefore paid a special visit to Qu Boyu and consulted him about how to be the teacher of the prince.
顏闔突然接到靈公聘其為太子傅的消息，嚇得不知如何是好。他知道蘧伯玉在衛國待過很長一段時間，而且是一位修行不錯的長者，特別專程到蘧府拜訪，祈求蘧先生明示為靈公太子傅的方法。
3 Yanhe said, “As you know, the prince is born cruel. The precedent teachers were teased to death, without good results. I know that it would be an arduous but fruitless work; however,if I didn't try my best to teach and correct him now, the chap in power in the future would fiddle with the country and the country would be suffered.
顏闔說：「你知道這位太子天性兇殘，先後好幾位太子傅都被他整得死去活來，不得善終。我知道這是一件吃力不討好的工作，可是如果我們不盡些力好好教他，這小子將來當政，任其胡作非為，那國家就慘了！
4 If I taught and corrected him too far, the chap would be annoyed and I would be the first victim.
當然如果我做得太露骨，管束得太嚴，這小子翻起臉來，第一個倒楣的自然就是我。
5 The chap didn’t make of his wrong and error; however, he was good at carping. If I carelessly gave him a handle against myself, I would bear a bitter fruit.
這小子對自己的過失看不清楚，可是挑別人的毛病則是一流的。我如果一不小心落入他的手裡，那就死得很難看了。
6 Sir, Could you tell me how to do the work to the point?”
蘧先生，你看這個工作我要怎麼做才能恰到好處？」
顏闔將傅衛靈公太子，而問於蘧伯玉曰﹔「有人於此，其德天殺。與之為無方，則危吾國，與之為有方，則危吾身。其知適足以知人之過，而不知其所以過。若然者，吾奈之何？」
7 With a well awareness of the arduousness of the work, Qu Boyu looked at him and said, “Well, from your questions I know that you have seized the key point of the work.
蘧伯玉深知這件工作的困難，他看了看顏闔，回答說：「嗯！從你的問題看，你已經掌握到整件事的要點。
8 Right! In the work, you have to be discreet and keep out of trouble.
沒錯，從事這件工作你必須從頭到尾小心謹慎、潔身自愛。
9 Outward you should keep amiable to the prince. Inward you must teach, correct and induce him at any time.
表面上，你必須與太子維持親近隨和的關係；私底下，又必須隨時注意教育他、誘導他走向正途。
10 You have to balance the outward and the inward. You keep amiable to him but must correct him. You should make him not detect your education and inducement,lets he think that you are fishing for fame and compliment and pretending to be chaste.
這中間的尺度你必須拿捏得剛好; 隨和但不能任他胡作非為; 教育、誘導也不能讓他看出破綻，以為你在沽名釣譽，自命清高。
蘧伯玉曰：「善哉問乎！戒之，慎之，正汝身也哉！形莫若就，心莫若和。雖然，之二者有患。就不欲入，和不欲出。形就而入，且為顛為滅，為崩為蹶﹔
11 When the prince plays cheerfully like a kid, you do the same as him; he sometime behaves out the code of conduct and you follow and don’t care the code. The prince’s attitude is unruly and free, you also follow him.
所以當太子玩得高興，像小孩似的，你就跟著他玩得像個孩子；太子某些行為不守規矩，你也跟著他幹，似乎也不把規矩當回事；太子的態度放蕩不拘、瀟灑自在，你也跟著不要太拘束。
12 In general, you must stand for and beside him. In the case, you may induce him to go to the right way.
總之永遠跟他站在一起，同聲共氣，在同中漸漸地誘導他走上沒有過失的正途之上。
心和而出，且為聲為名，為妖為孽。彼且為嬰兒，亦與之為嬰兒﹔彼且為無町畦，亦與之為無町畦﹔彼且為無崖，亦與之為無崖﹔達之入於無疵。
13 As we know, a mantis tries to obstruct a chariot. The mantis’ stupidity is to overrate his power and to think himself as Hercules. It is miserable to be unaware of his own power, which we should take warning from.
我們看螳螂擋車這件事。螳螂愚蠢之處就在他自以為力大無窮，以為一夫當關，萬夫莫敵; 對自己有限的能力不自知是很可憐的，必須引以為誡。
汝不知夫螳螂乎？怒其臂以當車轍，不知其不勝任也，是其才之美者也。
14 Never talk big to the prince. Brag yourself and at the meantime criticize him and carp at him. Who to be the prince’s teacher like this must have come to bad end.
在太子面前千萬別吹牛，自吹自擂，說自己了不起同時又批評太子，挑他的毛病。 這樣當太子傅的人沒有不完蛋的。
戒之，慎之，積伐而美者以犯之，幾矣！
15 Do you see the tiger breeders? They never feed living beastie to the tiger because they are afraid that it could arouse the tiger’s nature of cruelness when praying the beastie. They seldom feed it with the joint because they are afraid that the tiger’s cruelness burst out when tearing up the joint. They feed tiger always at a fixed schedule which is arranged by the rule of tiger’s nature.
你有沒有看過養虎的人。他們從不會拿活生生的小動物餵給老虎吃，因為他們怕老虎殺生時，會引出他兇殘的天性。也不敢將太大塊的肉整片丟給老虎吃，他們怕老虎在撕裂食物時兇性大發。他們餵老虎都有一定的時間，務必順著虎性而為之。
16 The tiger’s nature is different from that of human. Some one can get well alone with tiger while others often annoy it. The reason for that is to do in terms of the tiger’s nature or to the contrary.
虎性與人性不同。有些人與老虎配合的很好，有些人則經常刺激老虎發怒。這中間的差別就在順著牠或逆著牠使然。
汝不知夫養虎者乎？不敢以生物與之，為其殺之之怒也﹔不敢以全物與之，為其決之之怒也。時其飢飽，達其怒心。虎之與人異類，而媚養己者，順也﹔故其殺者，逆也。
17 A guy loved his horse very much. Usually he used basket as horse shit vessel and used big calm shell to take horse urine. He was very considerate in taking care of his horse. Someday he saw a horsefly sucking blood on the buttock of the horse. In order to drive off the horsefly he slapped it. As a result the horse was frightened and broke off the rein, bit and the headstall.
有人非常愛護他的馬。平日以筐盛馬糞，以大蛤蓋盛馬溺，可以說照顧的無微不至。有一天這位馬主人在馬屁股上看到蚊虻在吸馬的血，他好心地用手去拍打、驅趕蚊虻，結果馬受到驚嚇，將口勒、絡轡等都掙破了。
18 Bursting into anger, the horse completely forgot the master’s kindness and consideration, such as its shit vessel and urine shell. Could you blame the horse?
馬兒怒氣一來，哪裡還記得主人為其盛屎、盛溺的好處。這你能怪馬兒不好嗎？
19 So the first principle to be the prince’s teacher is that you should be aware of his temper and then guide him without offending him.
所以注意對方的脾氣，順勢而為，不要觸犯他的臭脾氣，是任太子傅的第一原則。」
夫愛馬者，以筐盛矢，以蜃盛溺。適有蚊虻僕緣，而拊之不時，則缺銜首碎胸。意有所至而愛有所亡。可不慎邪！」
