The Preservation of Life (1)
養生主（一）
1 The life of human is definite while the knowledge is infinite. It must be of failure that a man seeks for the infinite knowledge in his definite life.
人的生命是有限的，而知識是無限的。用有限的生命去追逐無限的知識這種嘗試是註定會失敗的。
吾生也有涯，而知也無涯。以有涯隨無涯，殆已！
2 A man thinks that he knows everything, which is far away the point.
自以為什麼都知道，這種想法也是不著邊際的。
3 A man should know the furthest bound of his understanding. He is sane to know that to be beyond the bound is fathomless. This is the furthest bound of human knowledge.
一個人知道自己瞭解力的極限範圍，知道超出這個範圍就無法理解是理智的。 這個極限也就是人類知識的極限。
已而為知者，殆而已矣！
4 Many people believe that benevolence produces fine and kind results; villainy produces harmful and bad results. The facts around us are that the kind may not outstand but the atrocious person gains some convenience and advantage because others dare not strive against him.
許多人認為善有善報，惡有惡報; 然而發生在我們四周的事實是：好人不一定就會出頭; 兇巴巴的人，別人不敢和他爭，反而往往得到一些方便、好處。
5 Therefore, other may not know and understand what your benevolent doing as a kind man; and you may not obtain good results immediately from your great act for the public good. Those who do evildoing, such as those doing theft or breaking traffic rule, often are lucky and escape from police.
所以做善事、做好人，別人不一定能體會; 你也不會收到立竿見影的效果；偷雞摸狗、經常闖紅燈的駕駛，他們則常常投機成功，沒被警察抓到。
6 Hence those who devote themselves to seeking for life goal by benefaction often feel disappointed and are indigant at the unfair outcomes.
因此，一心向善，以善行來尋求人生之路的人，他們常常會失望; 覺得不公平，引發怨天尤人的憤慨。
7 We should abide by the basic principle of handling worldly affairs, such as Laozi’s three principles: Through love, one has no fear; Through not doing too much one has amplitude of reserve power; Through not presuming to be the first in the world, one can develop one’s talent and let it mature; as well as the doctrine of middle-of-the-road policy. We do not play the fool for flattering somebody or some organization.
我們做人做事還是把握基本原則比如老子的三寶:慈故能勇，儉故能廣、不敢為天下先故能成器長以及中庸之道等不要為了討好某人，某團體而做些傻事。
8 We can guard our body from harm, preserve our life, fulfill our duties by our parents, and live our allotted span of life as long as we abide by the said principles.
只要能把握上述基本原則就可以保身、全生、養親，頤養天年矣！
為善無近名，為惡無近刑，緣督以為經，可以保身，可以全生，可以養親，可以盡年。
