Patents included in the DPD were identified by virtue of their PTO classification and the presence of keywords such as "DNA" within the body of the patent. Each individual patent claim has been coded into groups that relate to biological classification, function or application (e.g. human origin, promoter and vaccine). Each patent entry is linked with the affiliations of the inventors and assignees and a notation if the Unites States government had involvement in the underlying research. The intent of this database is to provide information on some of the most fundamental policy questions in biotechnology.
