painter's notes

I am a painter, portrait artist, illustrator, calligrapher, and sometimes teacher. I am drawn to painting portraits, abstractions, and color studies. I paint the things I care about--the environment, agriculture, people, and language.

I find inspiration in the ancient temples of the Maya, the cave paintings of the Mapuche, the cathedrals of Europe, and the Roman Colloseum. I also enjoy the artworks of Alice Neel, Frida Kahlo, Chuck Close, Amedeo Modigliani, Käthe Kollwitz, and Vincent Van Gogh. I thank the fine teachers I have had along my way--Davey Damkoehler (UWGB), Ron Hinson (TESC), and Emmett Johns (Peninsula Art School) who told me to look harder and measure-measure-measure.
