[Varhamir]: First of all, thanks for the attention and the opportunity you're giving us...

[Varhamir]: Cominciamo... la Finlandia è sempre stata una nazione produttiva, qualora parlassimo di metal. Come ti relazioni con la tua patria? Cosa ami, cosa non ami?

[Varhamir]: Well... Finland has always been a productive metal land. How do you relate with your nation? Likes and dislikes?

[Niilo]: Siamo orgogliosi e lieti di essere finlandesi. Semplicemente così. E' chiaro che ogni paese ha i suoi problemi, ma sono sicuro che la Finlandia è e sarà sempre il posto in cui vivrò. Il clima è un po' avverso, ma ci siamo abituati...

[Niilo]: We are very proud and happy to be Finnish. Simple as that. Of course every country has its own problems but I'm positive that Finland is the place we all want live in the future as well. Climate is a bit harsh but we've used to it...

[Varhamir]: Come è nata la tua passione per il metal? Come nacquero gli Insomnium?

[Varhamir]: How did your metal passion born? How Insomnium were created?

[Niilo]: Tutti noi cominciammo ad ascoltare metal dagli inizi del 90' quando eravamo ancora ragazzini. Dal momento in cui ebbi un album dei Metallica, ho amato il metal. Gli Insomnium furono fondati nel 1997 quando eravamo alle superiori. Facevo parte di una band grunge e avevo intenzione di creare un gruppo realmente heavy metal. Per questo chiesi a Ville Friman e Markus Hirvonen di entrare nella band... ed è così che cominciammo.

[Niilo]: I think all of us started listening metal in the beginning of 90´s when we were still kids. I got a Metallica album in Christmas and since then I've been into metal. Insomnium was created 1997 when we were in high school. I had a shitty grunge band and I wanted to create a real heavy metal band. I asked Ville Friman and Markus Hirvonen to join the band and that's how it started. 

[Varhamir]: Immagino abbiate band di riferimento del passato e del presente. Spesso le influenze musicali tendono a condizionare anche la vita. Cosa ne pensi?

[Varhamir]: I suppose you've got past and present's inspiration bands...often music influences create different life views. What do you think about?

[Niilo]: La musica è solo una parte della vita e credo che molte altre cose, quali educazione, famiglia condizionino maggiormente la tua esistenza.

[Niilo]: Music is just one part of life and I think many other things like education and family effect much more on your view of life.

[Varhamir]: Sicuramente consideri il "Gothenborg sound" come maggiore influenza. Cosa pensi riguardo l'attuale stile di bands come Dark tranquillity e In flames?

[Varhamir]: You surely consider "Gothenborg sound" as your main influence. What do you think about Dark tranquillity and In flames current style?

[Niilo]: I vecchi album di DT e IF sono indubbiamente i miei preferiti,lo stesso vale per gli altri della band. Ci hanno sicuramente influenzato molto. Ma non mi ritengo un grande fan degli ultimi loro album.

[Niilo]: Old DT and IF albums are our favourite ones and we all like them a lot. They have clearly influenced our sound. But I'm not a big fan of their newest albums.

[Varhamir]: Peggiore e migliore band sulla scena metal? Sii onesto...

[Varhamir]: Worst and best band on metal scene? Be HONEST...

[Niilo]: E' impossibile dirlo. Ci sono in giro molte band eccezionali, ma altrettante merde. Tra tutte adoro i Metallica ( primi 5 albums). I Motley Crue sono probabilmente la più sopravvalutata band della storia... in effetti non sono un vera band metal.
[Niilo]: This is impossible to say. A lot of great bands but huge amount of total shit also available. My all time favourite is still Metallica (first 5 albums). Mötley Cruë is probably the most overrated band ever, though not really a metal band.

[Varhamir]: Le vostre canzoni sono estremamente espressive, mirate a catturare l'attenzione del pubblico con motivi orecchiabili. Vi piace essere diretti!

[Varhamir]: Your songs are extremely expressive, aimed to catch audience attention with earable motifs. You like being direct. 

[Niilo]: In realtà crediamo tutti di poterci ritenere molto più progressivi rispetto ad altre band Melodic death. E' importante bilanciare gli elementi progressivi e quelli tradizionali. Molte band che vengono etichettate come progressive, ma lo sono solo perchè non comprese dalla maggioranza della popolazione.
[Niilo]: Actually I think we are more progressive than many other bands that can be described as "melodic death metal". I think it's important to find a balance between cathy tunes and progressive elements. Many bands that are labeled "proge metal" are just too difficult for normal human beings. 

[Varhamir]: Parti strumentali riflessive, arpeggi acustici straordinari. Chi è la mente dietro la composizione? Prendete tutti parte al songwriting?
[Varhamir]: Thoughtful instrumental verses, extraordinary acoustic arpeggios. Who's the "brain" behind compositions? Do you all take part in songwriting? 

[Niilo]: I principali compositori siamo Ville Friman e me, in quanto facciamo la maggior parte delle cose. Anche Ville Vanni prende parte alla stesura dei testi e alla composizione. Il nostro batterista Markus, fa la sua parte arrangiando le canzoni. Quindi tutti lavoriamo duro per rendere quanto meglio possibile la nostra musica.

[Niilo]: The masterminds behind Insomnium are Ville Friman and me, as we do most of the material. Ville Vänni also takes part in making lyrics and composing. Our drummer Markus does his own share in arranging the songs. So we all work hard for making the music as good as possible. 

[Varhamir]: C'è qualche canzone che meglio vi rappresenta? Ci sono connessioni emotive con le canzoni degli Insomnium?

[Varhamir]: Is there any song better represents your style? Have you emotional connections in Insomnium songs?

[Niilo]: Nessuna canzone in particolare può definire ciò che gli Insomnium sono. Vogliamo fare diversi tipi di canzoni senza ripeterci. Naturalmente sono maggiormente propenso alle canzoni che scrivo io :) Come accade per "In the Halls of Awaiting" per esempio.

[Niilo]: Not any one song can portray the whole image of what Insomnium is like. We want to make different kind of songs and not repeat ourselves. Of course I'm mostly keen on the songs I've made myself :) In the Halls of Awaiting for example.

[Varhamir]: Parlaci dei testi... seguite un concetto particolare?

[Varhamir]: Tell us about lyrics...do you follow a particular concept?

[Niilo]: I nostri testi sono spesso piccoli racconti autoconclusivi, ma non sempre. Storie infelici di amore e morte, dolore e brama.

[Niilo]: Our lyrics are often small tales which have some kind of ending, but not always. Sorrowful stories about love and death, woe and yearning.

[Varhamir]: Un concerto indimenticabile? Nessun episodio divertente?

[Varhamir]: An unforgettable gig? Any funny backstage episode?

[Niilo]: Il miglior concerto che abbiamo fatto è stato al KOKO di Londra. Grande serata, grande pubblico, posto indimenticabile. Dopo lo show ci ubriachiamo sempre per questo non ricordiamo episodi da backstage. :) Seriamente, nel backstage di londra incontrammo i ragazzi dei Napalm death, e quello fu strano e indimenticabile.

[Niilo]: Best gig we have played was in Koko in London. Great evening, great audience, unbelievable place! We get always do drunk after the show that we can't remember anything that happened backstage.:) Seriously, on the backstage in London we met the guys from Napalm Death and that was really strange and unforgettable.

[Varhamir]: Oltre la musica, quali sono i tuoi interessi? Immagino tu lavori...

[Varhamir]: Except music, which are your interests? You're working too i imagine...

[Niilo]: Siamo tutti studenti universitari e prossimi alla laurea. Io studio Storia culturale, Friman biologia, Vanni medicina e Markus giurisprudenza. Lavoro anche in una libreria la sera per mantenermi in maniera decente. I miei altri interessi sono letteratura, scrittura, football, floorball, palestra, board games... [Niilo]: We are all university students and about to graduate in the near future. I study cultural history, Friman biology, Vänni medicine and Markus environmental law. I also work in library during evenings to get a decent living. [Varhamir]: Attendiamo un prossimo lavoro discografico. Quanto aspetteremo ancora? In cosa differirà dai precedenti?

[Varhamir]: We're waiting for another full lenght...How much will we wait for it? Will it differ from previous albums?

[Niilo]: Registreremo il nuovo album la prossima primavera per sperare di vederlo pubblicato nell'autunno 2006. E sarà il migliore album degli Insomnium.

[Niilo]: We'll record the new album next spring so we hope it's released in the autumn 2006. And it will be the best Insomnium album ever made.

[Varhamir]: Suonerete mai in Italia?

[Varhamir]: Will you ever play a gig in Italy?

[Niilo]: Spero proprio di si! L'Italia è il paese europeo che preferisco e ci sono stato già 5 volte. Perfetto connubio di cultura, storia, arte, natura, sport, cibo e condizioni climatiche. Sarebbe grande suonare a Roma!!

[Niilo]: I certainly hope so! Italy is my favourite country in Europe and I've already been there five times. Perfect mixture of culture, history, art, nature, sport, food and nice weather. To play in Rome for example would be great!
