[ccmm]: I Poets of the Fall nascono come realtà finlandese, che al momento sta avendo uno straodinario successo in tutto il mondo. Come nacquero i PoTF, chi c'è dietro la loro fondazione?

[ccmm]: "Poets of the Fall" is a finnish reality, having an extraordinary success all over the world. How did POTF born? Who's behind its foundation?

[Mark]: Inizialmente i PoTF vennero al mondo quando decisi (io, vocalist) insieme ad Ollie (chitarrista), dopo aver suonato in una precedente band, di cominciare a scrivere qualcosa di nostro. Più tardi Captain(tastierista) entrò nella band e la sacra trinità fu completata. (Tra l'altro abbiamo 3 musicisti che suonano con noi in questi giorni durante i live. Questo successe qualche anno fa. Ci sedemmo nella mia auto, sulla spiaggia e cominciammo a scrivere alcune cose che avremmo voluto 
musicare, cose che avremmo voluto vedere nella nostra vita. Qualche tempo dopo, mentre registravamo il nostro primo album "Signs of Life", vendetti la macchina per pagare le bollette e per sfamarmi. (Ridendo) A quel tempo la macchina era il nostro ufficio. Quest'anno sono riuscito a comprare una nuova auto, ed ora sono felice di guidare un po' ovunque, con la mia piccola Ape car sport verde.

[Mark]: Originally POTF came to life when myself (Mark, vocalist) and Ollie (guitarist) got together after playing in a previous band, and decided to start writing our own music. Later on Captain (keyboardist) joined the group and our holy trinity was complete. (We also have three featured musicians playing in our live set these days). This was a few years ago. We sat in my car on the beach and wrote down stuff that we wanted to do music-wise, things we wanted to see in our lifetimes. Sometime after I sold that car to get money for food and bills, while we recorded our first album, Signs of Life. (Laughs) The car was our office at the time. That was sometime back. I was able to buy a new car this year, so I'm happy driving my little green sports bee all over the place.

[ccmm]: La Finlandia è stata considerata sempre una nazione musicalmente feconda, soprattutto nell'ambito metal. Cosa ne pensi? 

[ccmm]: Finland has always been considered as a productive music land, but probably now is metal ruling its scene. What do you think about?

[Mark]: Parlando da "finlandese", credo che musicalmente la Finlandia stia finalmente cominciando ad emergere come un paese versatile. Non è sempre stato così! Da quando il metal esiste, qualora tu pensassi in termini di medicina cinese, La Finlandia è una nazione metallica di natura. Immagino non bisogna meravigliarsi dell'amore che proviamo verso il suono "scabro intorno alla lama"

[Mark]: Musically, as a finnish person, I think Finland is finally beginning to 
emerge as a versatile country. It didn't always used to be so. As far as metal goes, if you think in terms of chinese medicine, Finland is a very metallic country by nature. I suppose it's no wonder we love the "rough around the edges" kinda sound. 

[ccmm]: Sto ascoltando molto "Signs of Life". Rappresenta un momento rilassante di felicità. Struggente ma energico, mostra pensieri malinconici ed un eccitante voglia di vivere. Molte emozioni differenti in un unico cd, apprezzabili facilmente dal pubblico. Un album completo insomma! Avete indubbiamente raggiunto il vostro scopo!

[ccmm]: I'm listening hard to "Signs of life". It represents a relaxing moment of happiness. Sorrowful but energetic, it shows gloomy thoughts and exciting life desires. Many different emotions in a single cd, easily appreciable by audience. A really complete album! You've definitely reached your aim...

[Mark]: Grazie, sono molto contento del modo in cui l'album è stato realizzato.

[Mark]: Thank you, I'm very happy with the way the album turned out.

[ccmm]: Pare voi abbiate delle vedute rock/pop. Sicuramente avete anche influenze metal, forse nel gothic. Descrivici lo stile dei Potf, il vostro genere musicale. E i tuoi gruppi preferiti?

[ccmm]: It seems you're in rock/pop views. Surely you've got metal influences, maybe with
gothic inspirations. Describe POTF style, your musical genre...your favourite groups?

[Mark]: Il gruppo è una sorta di ibrido...così definisco il nostro genere ibrido o "morphmetal"... Esso ha elementi sfacciatamente tratti da ogni genere. Ma ha anche un suono distintivo, che può essere solo dei Poets of the fall. Siamo stati influenzati da tanti gruppi, dai Metallica, Pantera, ai Pink Floyd, Elo, Tori Amos, Steve Vai... anche Prince... e naturalmente Live e U2.

[Mark]: POTF is sort of a hybrid... so I often call our style Hybrid or morphmetal... Unashamedly it has elements from nearly any given genre. But it has a very distinctive sound, which can only be called Poets of the Fall. We've been influenced by very different groups, from the likes of Metallica and Pantera, to Pink Floyd, ELO, Tori Amos, Steve Vai... even Prince... and of course, Live and U2.

[ccmm]: Potreste benissimo essere una risposta positiva per le attuali e presunte "starnazzanti" band sulla scena. Secondo voi può definirsi morta la musica moderna?

[ccmm]: You could be a positive answer for current and presumed "fluttering" bands on scene. It's, in your opinion, modern music dead?

[Mark]: Non mi spingerei lontano dicendo che è "morta". Mi rendo conto però che in alcuni casi non si tratta più di far musica, ma di far soldi con il minimo rischio. Questo è purtroppo un fattore che causerà tutti i tipi di limitazioni alla musica ed un rapido dissolversi di personalità dalla scena. Per fortuna ci sono ancora tanti musicisti talentuosi che non investono in quel sistema, facendo tuttora successo.
[Mark]: I wouldn't go so far as to say it's dead. I do however recognize that in some cases, it's not about making music anymore, but about making money with minimized risk. This is sadly a factor that will cause all kinds of limitations to the music and very quickly personality is stripped from the scene. Luckily there are many very talented musicians in the world who do not buy into that system and still succeed. 

[ccmm]: "Poets of the Fall" è sicuramente un nome eloquente per una band. Da dove viene e chi ebbe l'idea? 

[ccmm]: "Poets of the Fall" is an eloquent name. Where it come from, who had the idea?

[Mark]: Volevamo che il nostro nome caratterizzasse l'umore e l'atmosfera suggeriti dalla nostra musica, così cercammo qualcosa che sembrasse intendere molte cose per noi e simultaneamente contenesse solo un giusto sentimento...i poeti sono sempre stati pensatori ribelli, vivendo in modo anticonformista, vestendo gli stracci da strada del loro tempo...noi non vestiamo certo panni rock&roll...per ora...(ride) e FAll, inteso come autunno (la mia stagione preferita), nel cui periodo la caduta di tutte le cose dona un sinistro e stuzzicante sapore alla vita. E' anche, come hai detto carinamente tu, un modo eloquente di conferire all'uomo un architettura di morte.
[Mark]: We wanted our name to convey the mood and atmosphere of our music, so we looked for things that seemed to mean a lot to us and simultaneously contain just the right feeling... poets have always been the sort of rebellious thinkers, living just off the beat, dressing up in their street rags of their time... we do not wear very typical rock and roll clothing... yet... (laughs) and Fall, meaning the season (my favourite time of year) as well as the downcome of things gives it all a titillating, ominous flavour. It is also, like you nicely said, an eloquent way of dubbing man an architect of demise.

[ccmm]: Testi stupendi e riffs coinvolgenti. "Lift" con un solo fantastico, "Illusion & Dream", dall'eccellente arpeggio e con un cantato grandioso, assolutamente da brivido. Chi è il principale compositore e l'autore dei testi di Signs of life?
[ccmm]: Wonderful lyrics and involving riffs. "Lift" with a fantastic solo, "Illusion & dream" excellent arpeggios and a great,absolutely shivering singing. Who's main composer, who wrote "Signs of life" lyrics? 

[Mark]: Wow, grazie un milione. Io sono l'autore dei testi. La mia croce e delizia. La musica è composta da tutti e tre. Potrebbero cominciare da me, ma non diventerebbero mai dei POTF senza le magie di Ollie e Captain.

[Mark]: Wow, thanks a million. I'm the lyricist. That is my love and my ball and chain. The music comes from all three of us. The songs may often begin with me, but they would never become POTF without Ollie and Captain's musical wizardry. 

[ccmm]: "Senza silenzio non ci può essere musica". Un motto significativo su cui basate la vostra musica, immagino.

[ccmm]: "Without silence there can be no music". A meaningful motto your music bases on, I suppose.

[Mark]: Si, tutto necessita un opposto per ottenere significato.

[Mark]: Yes, everything needs it's opposite to have a meaning.

[ccmm]: "Late goodbye" è stata usata come colonna sonora di "Max Payne 2". Cosa si nasconde dietro la sua creazione? Intendendo la canzone...

[ccmm]: "Late goodbye" has been used for "Max Payne 2" soundtrack. What's behind its creation? Behind the song i mean... 

[Mark]: Quando scrissi la canzone, ero abbastanza vicino alle linee emozionali alla base della storia di Max Payne, così quando Sam Lake, il creatore del gioco, mi diede uno dei suoi poemi da leggere, ebbi una vera e propria scintilla creativa, appoggiai il testo ad una musica inventata.Ero in ufficio, tra uno dei miei lavori giornalieri e sentivo la melodia e la chitarra nella mia testa... rimaneva semplicemente da finire l'arrangiamento e da trovare qualcosina in più sulla chitarra una volta giunto a casa. Sedetti a terra con il mio registratore a cassette... ebbene si, uso ancora un datato mangianastri per registrare le prime versioni delle canzoni... così impressi tutto sul nastro... credo si trovi ancora da qualche parte nel mio appartamento.

[Mark]: When I wrote the song, I was quite familiar with mood that was outlining the Max Payne story, so when Sam Lake, who's the scriptwriter for the game, gave me one of his poems to read, I got a real spark for the song and based the lyrics on that poem. I was still working a day job, so I sat down at the office and heard the melody and guitars in my head... it was simply a matter of writing the whole thing down and then finding it on the guitar in the evening when I got home. I was sitting on the floor with my tape recorder... yes I still use an out of date tape recorder to record the first versions of my songs... and I played the thing on tape... I suppose that tape is still somewhere in my flat...

[ccmm]: Altre attività oltre la musica?

[ccmm]: Other activities beyond music?

[Mark]: Dormire direi vada bene. Ollie ama trascorrere il tempo con il suo cane, immerso nella natura. Un gran bel modo di liberarsi. Captain tende a spendere il suo tempo tra gingilli e nuovi gadget e andando a concerti. Io provo a far pratica di tai-chi e yoga... è stato difficile dopo il tour, ma ce la sto facendo. Ultimamente sto giocando molto con la mia Xbox...

[Mark]: Sleeping is good. Ollie likes to spend time in the nature with his dog, it's a great way to unwind. He also likes to play tennis. Captain tends to spend a lot of time with the latest 
gimmicks and gadgets and go to concerts. I try do my tai chi and yoga practices... it's been difficult to reinitiate after the tour, but I'm getting there. Lately I've been playing games on my xbox console...

[ccmm]: Qualche album futuro in progetto? Da cosa differirà dai precedenti?

[ccmm]: New album future projects? Will they differs from previous one?

[Mark]: Abbiamo da poco cominciato a registrare il nostro secondo album. Le canzoni saranno differenti perchè nuove, ha ha! Il nostro stile ed il nostro suono avranno qualche dimensione in più, ma fin quando la nostra musica si farà portatrice di valori di vita reali, porteremo in alto il suono dei POTF.

[Mark]: We have recently started recording our second album. The songs will be different because they're new, ha ha! Our style and sound may have some new dimensions, but since our music is based on our real life values, it will definitely carry on the POTF sound.

[ccmm]: Vi vedremo mai in qualche tour europeo o in date italiane?

[ccmm]: Will we ever see you in european tours or better in italian gigs?

[Mark]: Speriamo di si! Mi piacerebbe qualche tournee in Italia.

[Mark]: Let's hope so. I'd love to tour in Italy.
