If your motherboard has the nforce2 chipset, then this kernel needs to be patched to solve the locking madness when APIC is enabled in the kernel.
nforce2 disconnect quirk patch
This patch was meant for 2.6.0, so you need to hand edit fixup.c or make changes to the patch so that it fits in the right place.
OR
Directly replace /usr/src/linux/arch/i386/pci/fixup.c with this file -- changed fixup.c
