American Motors Rock Band

Heavy on atmosphere, mood, and repetition the appeal of American Motors lies in the juxtaposition of a brutal rigid rhythm section working in opposition to the ornate textures that appear and disappear. Alternating between stuffing up the cracks and leaving space for every crack to be visible. Sprinkled over this is an impressionistic approach to storytelling distinctively rooted in Appalachia.

American Motors was established in 2023 to explore repetition and space through dystopic impressionism. To make music for liminal spaces. The duo of Dustin White and Alex Steward initially got together to test the hypothesis of "what would happen if you played a new age tape over a relentless lockstep rhythm section". Both White and Steward have traveled separate Lewis and Clark paths thru the underground creating CVs too voluminous to get into now, but rest assured, they're coast to coast journeymen of the DIY underworld. Despite having been in the same room a few times over the years, they somehow hadn't actually met, until both ended up in Austin, TX in a post-pandemic haze unsure exactly what to do next musically. After a series of fits and starts trying to find the right third who matched their instant chemistry they decided to hole up in a practice space and just record. Then edit, re-record, edit again, and re-work everything until a form started to emerge. After a year of honing this process, the duo headed to Baltimore, MD, to work with J Robbins. Joining them for the sessions was Brad Williams on bass, another underground stalwart with whom White shares a long collaborative history.

In 2024 the wheel isn't being reinvented but there are still opportunities to smash the wheel into the bits it's made of and try to put it back together differently than you found it. This is one of those opportunities -- to merge disparate and disconnected shapes into something altogether new.
