THE FACES OF THE ZODIAC
MOST students of Astrology are aware of the thirty-six decanates of the zodiac, whereby each sign is divided into three sections of ten degrees each. Each decanate is said to possess different qualities from the other two, even though each belongs to the same sign.
Many years ago, in 1830 or thereabouts, one John Storey of Sheffield published a book of Simmonite's "Arcana" of Astrology, based upon the teaching he had received from his predecessor, who flourished in the late seventeen-hundreds.
Simmonite's researches had led him to divide the zodiac not into thirty-six decanates, but seventy-two `faces' of five degrees each. For each face he left a description of its qualities when ascending or culminating (on the midheaven of a chart). He also provided both a general physical description for each sign rising on the ascendant, or eastern horizon, plus the way in which each might be modified by the influence of each face, which in some instances is quite different from the sign's general description.
This was clearly due in some measure to the rather obvious fact that physical attributes are likely to change by degrees (literally) as the rising sign progresses through the signs of the zodiac. He also gave descriptions of ways in which the different faces might, in some instances, be modified by fixed stars in particular degrees. These are given here as I noted them in the late nineteen-fifties, so it needs to be remembered that owing to the precession of the equinoxes, these fixed star positions will need to be revised slightly. Most students will be particularly interested in the physical appearance delineations, and therefore these are given first in the pages which follow, followed by the delineations for character and professional prospects (`preferment') for each of the seventy-two faces.
It should be made clear that in Simmonite's day, the population of the British Isles was more or less exclusively of white European origin, and his physical descriptions would be based upon his observations of such types only.
Concerning the character attributes, astrological students may find, as I have done, that they may not be without significance when applied to other aspects in a personal chart, such as the Sun position, or that of a significant planet or aspect.
I have taken the liberty of endeavouring, wherever possible, to render Simmonite's wording in gender-inclusive language. It is also worth mentioning that the language used is generally that of the early nineteenth century, so that words such as `wit' for example, should be taken as applying to intelligence in general, and not just one aspect of it, and so with other terms, such as `consumption' and `consumptive' which we would recognise more easily as tuberculosis, no longer a wasting or even life-threatening disease.
The text as given here is a summary of Simmonite's text, which I made as notes from his Arcana at the time I possessed the book (1958). Most of the book itself is concerned with the now arcane science of calculating charts by right ascension in conjunction with the Nautical Almanac. Nowadays this is all done for us either by ephemerides of the planets places using sidereal time, or by computer programs whose method of calculation is often unknown except to the compiler, but which reliably tallies with the results obtained from the ephemeris. It is unlikely therefore that anyone will want to re-publish Simmonite's work in full, hence this small, but I believe valuable, publication.

ARIES
ARIES rising at birth produces a person of a dry, lean spare body, rather tall, strong limbs, large bones, thick shoulders; long face, sharp piercing sight, dark eyebrows, reddish wiry hair, swarthy complexion, and neck rather long.
Aries 1º-5º ascending, on account of the fixed stars, produces a person of mean stature, not fat, rather low than tall, broad forehead, high cheeks, narrow chin, low hooked nose, reddish or dark hair, a little curling, swarthy red complexion, and black eyes.
Aries 1º, Whale's Tail, South End, of the nature of Saturn, generally unfortunate; sometimes the body will be of middle stature, especially if Saturn, Jupiter or Mercury be in this face. Intellectual organs are good, and rather quick perceptive development, journeys and frequent discord among herdsmen (sic!).
This face ascending denotes audacity and boldness, a good orator, an active and ingenious person, witty and inventive.
Culminating, gives military preferment, and makes surgeons or the like; if an ordinary person, proves a butcher, farrier, but no preferment.
Aries 6º-10º rising at birth shows a person of grave aspect, steady eye, not great stature, yet big-boned, rather lean, brown or swarthy complexion, long visage, having a mole or mark upon the face, above the nose. This face (of Aries) is dry, and of the nature of Mars and Mercury, consisting of Algenib (7º) and Pegasi, of the second magnitude. If Mars and Mercury be herein, the judgement will be more confirmed. If Mercury be here in the 14th degree, a good and pleasant looking face.
This face ascending shows a lofty spirit, one extremely conceited, a good orator, proud, sullen, spiteful. The face of jealousy, many sorrows and evils, and gives both good and evil fortune.
Culminating, gives rising to honour, glory and renown, in the fore part of life: but the native may precipitate his or her self in latter days; it brings both frowns and favours from great people.
Aries 11º-15º rising at birth shows a moderately lean middle person, long visage, dark hair, grey hollow eyes, face good looking. Venus and Jupiter rule this face, and it is moist. Caput Andromedae is in the face (13º) and is powerful in influence, gains wealth and conquers enemies; fond of dress of a gaudy colour. Venus here, the visage oval.
This face ascending is the face of weariness, it gives a good rhetorician, counsellor, and able politician, sober and active wit.
Culminating presages honour, and the native will do well as a goldsmith, silversmith, jeweller, etc.
Aries 16º-20º rising at birth shows a middle stature, neat well proportioned body, fresh, round face, light brown hair and grey eyes. Of the nature of Jupiter and Venus, rather moist and fortunate. Sun here, high forehead; Mercury, long face, freckled, light curling hair. Uranus, darker hair.
This face ascending denotes a disposition affable, courteous and pleasant; and will overcome foes.
Culminating shows great honour, dignity and renown through government officers, both military and civil; if Jupiter, Mars and the Sun also culminate, the good and honour are durable; but if Saturn be therein, the native will subject to be opposed and prejudiced. Jupiter shows ecclesiastical preferment, Mars military advancement; the Sun, shines `at court.'
Aries 21º-25º rising at birth shows a middle creature, dark hair and skin, long face, teeth distorted, which soon become decayed, legs bent, and indeed the whole native hooks forward. It is dry, of the nature of Saturn generally, conceited and obstinate. Mars here, strongly made - fierce and active. Mars in Aries generally gives hollow eyes, and a quarrelsome disposition. Saturn in Aries, a strong hoarse voice and high forehead.
This face ascending portends a stupid, deceitful, quarrelsome and contentious person.
Culminating this face destroys the native's honour and respect-
ability; and the person lives without popularity.
Aries 26º-30º rising at birth shows one of good stature, rather tall than low, except the Moon be there, an austere countenance, thick eyebrows, black hair and curling, wide mouth, large nose, strong well-set body, but the face seems manly, with some scar. Uranus on the first house denotes a long visage, and teeth rather large and somewhat distorted. Principally under Mars and Saturn, with Zona Andromodae (28º) of the nature of Venus. It is, therefore, rather dry, and is generally fortunate, as sailors, chemists, and cattle keepers. Jupiter here, pimples in the face; Mercury here, hollow cheeks, light eyelashes and eyebrows, flattish nose.
This face ascending gives a courageous, confident, impudent but unfortunate person.
Culminating gives martial preferment, but danger of being killed in battle.
TAURUS
TAURUS rising at birth, or time of question, gives a short, full stout body, broad brows, large eyes, full face, thick lips, short neck, thick broad hands and shoulders, wide nose and mouth, dark curling hair, swarthy complexion.
Taurus 1º-5º rising at birth shows a low middle stature, black hair, a little curling, swarthy complexion, dark eyebrows. Chiefly under the influence of Saturn and Mars containing the ancient Ram's Head (5º). Moon with Saturn, Uranus, or Mars, subject to quinsies. Makes an orator - but abrupt.
This face ascending the native gains by his or her own industry, being ingenious, serious and resolute.
Culminating shows preferment by women; if a poor person, becomes a town officer, if better placed, a secretary; if a scholar, a priest or minister; if a lawyer, becomes a barrister.
Taurus 6º-10º rising at birth denotes a low middle stature, long face, broadish forehead, full cheeks, distorted teeth, dark brown hair, swarthy complexion, stooping in the shoulders and melancholy appearance. Under the power of Saturn, consequently cold, denoting discord, and ill-luck by buildings, mining - makes epicures - large gustativeness.
This face ascending the native is discontent, unhappy, and subject to many evils, but if the Moon be here, gain by common people.
Culminating shows honour by means of old people, and such as are devoted to a certain kind of sanctity; if Saturn be here, or Mercury, preferment will not be small.
Taurus 11º-15º rising at birth gives a small stature, pale, swarthy complexion, little eyes, looking downward, frowning eyebrows, large forehead, thick lips, almost flat nose, thin beard if male, unpleasant countenance, and broad stooping shoulders. Under the influence of stars of the nature of Saturn, consequently dry and cold, consisting of Ceti (13º). The 15th degree rising is fortunate, giving a high moral spirit and Herculean firmness; inclines the native to journey. The same if the Moon or Venus be herein.
This face ascending shows a slow, peevish, negligent person, ungrateful spirit, accepting kindness, but never returning, not acknowledging those received.
Culminating gives shame, contempt, indignities, labour, care, and troubles; if other configurations concur, the native will be poor.
Taurus 16º-20º rising at birth shows a middle stature, proportionate, oval pleasant face, seldom displeased, chestnut colour hair, large forehead, grey eyes; if a woman, she is generally a beauty. Moist face, of the nature of Venus - a gentle temper.
This face ascending shows an affable disposition, one subjecting to wrongs, but never returning any; expert in the art of loving, in which capacity they may perform many wonderful things, especially if Venus or the Moon be there.
Culminating - generally preferment through women, and by the means of persons very honourable. Certain if the Moon be there.
Taurus 21º-25º rising at birth shows a short person, reddish complexion, pimples or other irruptions in the face. Saturn here gives the native a stinking breath. Face rather oval, hair black; arms, hands, fingers, legs and feet rather short, and the body fleshy. It is temperate, of the nature of Moon and Mars combined. (If the natal Sun be in Aries, quiet disposition, of a retiring nature, extremely tall, over six feet high, if a male).
This face ascending portends a deceitful person, pretending one thing and intending another; no faith, trust, or honesty, and often given to railing, especially if the Moon or Mercury, or both be there.
Culminating it is the face of impudence, treason, treachery, wickedness, and rising to a fading kind of honour through some notorious action, or impudent prank.
Taurus 26º-30º rising at birth shows a robust person, square visage, brown complexion, generally a mark or scar on the face, low middle stature, black hair. This face is temperate, of the nature of Mars and Moon, Pleiades in 29º, defects in the eyes, and possibly smallpox - rude in behaviour.
This face ascending shows one quarrelsome, and mischievous disposition.
Culminating gives but little honour, sordid, till towards the latter years, and then, significators concurring, shows honour, yet full of trouble.
GEMINI
GEMINI gives a tall, upright, well made body, strong and active, sanguine complexion, hazel eyes, very dark hair, smart active look, long arms, short fleshy hands and feet, quick step; if a female, she has very fine eyes.
Gemini 1º-5º rising at birth shows a stiff person, long, lean, thin, red swarthy face, dark or reddish hair, round-shouldered, nimble tongue, and bow legged. It is dry, of the nature of Mars, and shows hunters; when this face rises (Astrology of election - A.B.) it is not well to take medicine. 5º pockmarked.
This face ascending shows an ill humoured person, sometimes frantic, proud, disdainful, scornful disposition, and given to lying and thieving.
Culminating gives material honour; if a mean person, is often a highwayman (!) a thief; or if education has altered the native, proves a surgeon etc. If Saturn, Mars, or Moon be there, may prove a butcher; a person of better quality, a captain or the like, or one that gets a living by some idle way.
Gemini 6º-10º rising at birth shows a spruce person, almost round visage, chestnut hair and a voluble tongue; altogether a good appearance. Ruled by Venus and Mars containing Aldebaran & Bull's South Eye (8º). Ninth degree, dark complexion. Moon here with Saturn or Mars, danger of hurts in the head or face.
This face ascending shows one self-conceited, proud and vainglorious; but if Mercury be here, Mars or Sun, the native has capacity and wit, and one that will not be fooled; if Saturn, the capacity is full as large, penetrating, wily, deep, discerning, and crafty - very large secretiveness.
Culminating it is the face of lasting martial or ecclesiastical honours, fame, glory and repute, but the native attains it by self- industry and labour.
Gemini 11º-15º rising at birth gives a shortish person, red round face, strong well composed body, short curled hair, almost black. Organ of language large, goggle eyes, distorted teeth, thick shoulders and short thick legs. Of the nature of Jupiter and Saturn, contains Rigel in the sixteenth degree; twelfth degree fat. Moon with Saturn or Mars, danger of misfortune in the face. (You might think there was plenty already! - A.B.).
This face ascending shows a bold person; one of an imperious, scornful disposition, self-magnifying and despising others; and if Mars be there, is proud and haughty, insulting, talkative, and expecting that everyone should give the native place and credit, though often speaks lies; if this place be fortified, or Mercury be there in dignity, one of great majesty.
Culminating gives but mean preferment, rather makes the native a handicraft, mechanic, or artificer; if Mercury be there, may be a clerk to an attorney, or some nobleman; if the Sun, gives court preferment, but not durable. If Mercury prefers the native more (than previously stated) may in later years give honour of an eminent and learned lawyer.
Gemini 16º-20º rising at birth portends a fullish stature, sandy hair, fresh countenance, rather corpulent, roundish visage, sparkling eyes, of a delicate composure in all respects. Teeth soon decay. Bellatrix in 20º governed by Mercury and Mars, of a dryish nature; profitable marriage, gain of friends.
This face ascending shows a bold adventurous spirit, one aiming at all things, and undertaking anything (yet not often bringing things to perfection); of a free spirit and nimble tongue, rash, hasty, turbulent, humorous and conceited.
Culminating gives the native the acquaintance and favour of captains, generals, military persons, and the estimation of scholars. A good orator.
Gemini 21º-25º rising at birth portends one of a good proportion, but lean, black hair, long visage, narrow chin, brown complexion, black eyes (and beard, if male), long slender legs, and looking as if consumptive. Chiefly under the influence of Mars and Jupiter, being dry.
This face ascending shows an indifferent temper, seeks the love of women, a little doting and lecherous; an apparent saint but a deceiver.
Culminating shows preferment through own ingenuity, and that the native may, through his or her own craft, while seeming sanctity, attain more than usual honour. If statesmanlike, rises to royal honour.
Gemini 26º-30º rising at birth shows a neat person, clean oval visage, bright hair, whitish complexion. It is temperate, of the nature of Mars and Mercury. Beltaguese in 27º, disgraceful person; 29º, dark.
This face rising shows an affable, courteous, gentle disposition, ingenious active wit, skilled in most arts and sciences, and delights in those things which are ingenious, and profound quality.
Culminating it gives no extraordinary, or durable preferment from women.
CANCER
CANCER gives a small stature, strong and well set, fair and pale, round face, small features and voice, brown hair, grey eyes, bad teeth, upper part of the body larger than lower, slender arms, weak constitution, prolific.
Cancer 1º-5º rising at birth portends a middle stature, large, full, fleshy body, face between long and round, a little swarthy, brown hair and indifferently handsome. Governed by Mercury and Venus, temperate, danger of imprisonment. 4º rather light and lower middle stature.
This face ascending shows a wise wary person, a good orator, deceitful, jealous of everybody, fearful, and always mistrusting the worst things.
Culminating it gives preferment to places of the highest trust in a country, the native is honourable, famous, beloved of princes, and if Jupiter or the Sun be therein, the native will attain these eminent honours chiefly by women of noble blood.
Cancer 6º-10º rising at birth shows one of little stature, square visage, reddish swarthy complexion, dark brown hair and a little curling, strong voice, broad forehead and a dimple in the chin. Of the nature of Mercury and Venus.
This face ascending shows one of good tongue, bold adventurous nature, yet doing all things with advice and consideration; subject to affront everybody, but unwilling to receive any, a person conceited of his or her own wisdom and abilities, and to undervalue all others.
Culminating seldom gives preferment, but if any, it is very mean; yet if Jupiter be therein free from affliction, and in good aspect with Sun, Venus, or the ruler of the first house, it may signify preferment from the church, which may be durable.
Cancer 11º-15º rising at birth portends one of middle stature, swarthy complexion, and if Mars be there hair curling; long thin face and nose, slender body, looking as if in a consumption, shrill voice, and high cheek bones. Ruled by stars of the influence of Jupiter, Saturn and Mars, containing the Dog Star. (Sirius).
This face ascending signifies a good orator, one sober, serious, and of a melancholy disposition, crafty, subtil, and deceitful; if Saturn be here, the craft of the native is beyond measure; if Mars, impudent in mischief; if the Sun, accounts craftiness as glory, yet the Sun much meliorates the manners, and makes the native ambitious of doing worthy acts, not so much for the love as for the honour of them; if the Moon be here, the native is more worthy, but very mutable in resolve; if Jupiter, honestly religious, and sober.
Culminating it gives generally ecclesiastical preferment, according to the quality of the native; if dull and mean, becomes a preacher, if of a more aspiring genius it gives some fat parsonage, or the capability of being partaker of the prebendary or deanery of some cathedral; if Jupiter, Sun or Moon be here, undoubtedly becomes a prelate, or a bishop; if Jupiter in conjunction with the Moon be there, in England may come to be an archbishop; in the papacy, a pope or cardinal.
Cancer 16º-20º rising at birth gives a lean, black swarthy visage, black hair, drawling speech, much affected, though the native speaks nonsense; crook legged, splay footed, heavy eyebrows and down looking. This face is evil for female lovers, and brings dishonour upon them; 18º, lowish and dark.
This face ascending shows a melancholy person, envious, proud, stubborn, self willed, not delighting to hear reason, but only what feeds and nourishes ill humours; of a sad and timorous disposition, yet outbraving the whole world.
Culminating may prove to be a merchant, a roguish fogger, if mean, proves to be a sexton, or clerk to some priest, or may have the honour to be a hangman in a corporation. [Know any roguish foggers?].
Cancer 21º-25º rising at birth signifies a lean visage, and boldness; great lips, high forehead, long hooked nose and chin, little beard in a man, hair either dark brown or sandy, slender legs, and incomposed body. Influenced by Pollux and Procyon of the nature of Mercury and Mars.
This face ascending gives the native boldness, impudence, a voluble tongue, proud, saucy, and malapert, thinking always too highly of self, and meanly of others; aiming at great things, yet falling short of them through his or her own rashness; great self-esteem.
Culminating gives preferment in armies, and makes a commander, the power of kings, princes, and great men; if the Sun be there, honour able preferment at court, but nothing durable - it is no sooner possessed than lost, and those honours are only a precipice to bring destruction; in war, shows danger of being killed; at court the displeasure of the monarch, etc.
Cancer 26º-30º rising at birth portends a long freckled face, full forehead, large nose, full eyes, narrow chin, wide mouth, thin stooping body, low middle stature, broad shoulders, dark curling hair; if Sun or Mars be here, the hair is red or yellow. It is dry, of the nature of Saturn, Mars, and Mercury, fond of dress and the water.
This face rising shows an active, turbulent spirited person, aiming at great things, and through personal prudence, joined with an industrious and unwearied spirit, commonly attaining them; shows one serious, but bold; melancholy, yet undaunted, weighing matters, incredulous, believing nothing but what is known, nor thrusting further than has been tried.
Culminating gives one eminent in learning. of great parts, famous in those studies which are prosecuted; proves a good physician, surgeon, or chemist; if Sun or Moon be there, is preferred to the service of the great, and becomes eminently famous; if Jupiter be there, rises by the means of clergy, and proves an honour to a benefactor; if Venus, by the means of a lady; but if Saturn be there, notwithstanding all his or her parts, and all just deserts, will fall under the frowns of fortune.
LEO
LEO gives a large noble body, full tall majestic stature, broad shoulders, austere, oval, ruddy, fierce countenance, yellow bushy hair, large staring eyes, yet quick sighted, strong voice, resolute, unbending, aspiring mind, bold and courageous.
Leo 1º-5º rising at birth portends a short thick well set body, square ruddy visage, brown hair, a little curling, all the features in good proportion, well made nose, pleasant eye, red lips, and nimble tongue; a strong well-compact body. 2º dark; 4º dark, pockmarked; 1º stiff and plump; 5º light complexion, subject to dishonour if a female.
This face ascending shows a bold, fearless, daring, inconsiderate person, generally has no respect to honour, etc., but forms a bad opinion of all persons.
Culminating gives martial honour, and preferment at court by means of ladies; yet liable to lose honour by some person's enmity; if Saturn be there, dishonour; if Mars, the native causes own downfall; if Sun or Jupiter, more durable; if of mean birth, the native makes a good smith, farrier, chemist or surgeon.
Leo 6º-10º rising at birth shows a middle stature adorned with good features, clear skin, roundish visage, flaxen hair, grey eyes, straight full body and breasts, in age grows fat. 8º largish; 9º stiff.
This face ascending shows one kind, affable, courteous, obliging everybody, always returning good for evil, and kindness for ingratitude, easy to be entreated, yet changeable.
Culminating shows the favour of women, queens and great ladies; if it be an ordinary person, a feminine kind of employment, a seamstress, barber, or a tailor, but whatever honour is gained if Saturn not be there, is durable and lasting.
Leo 11º-15º rising at birth produces a swarthy complexion, dark hair, large forehead, hanging eyebrows, black eyes, prominent cheekbones, distorted teeth, a mark near the left side of the chin, full stature and consumptive appearance. 14º tall; 10º, 11º rather stout, dark hair. Of the nature of the Moon and Venus, fond of the water and given to intemperance.
This face ascending produces a prudent, discreet person, unresenting any evil, but returns ill when an opportunity serves.
Culminating gives martial honour; if a soldier, the native gets killed, liable to the frowns of great personages; in a woman's natus, she marries a soldier.
Leo 16º-20º rising at birth signifies a native tall, slender, high forehead, chestnut coloured hair, long face, pale complexion, slender legs, and a great eater, having gustativeness large. 17º stiff; 19º tallish, brown complexion; 16º low and stiff; 15º exactly as the whole face. The nature of Uranus, and the native is often of a fidgety disposition, and haughty temper of mind.
This face ascending signifies a subtile person, a wary cant, a religious hypocrite, and joins societies (like many others) for the sake of duping their fellows.
Culminating portends favour of great persons, and makes the native popular as a chemist, druggist or physician; yet will be obnoxious to envy and slander.
Leo 21º-25º rising at birth signifies a comely, tall, lusty, full faced person, brown hair, straight; majestic carriage and deportment. 21º stiff and lowish. 25º middle stature, rather light; Moon here, giddy -they are generally profound in disputation and philosophical in argumentation.
This face ascending makes a good orator, profound and serious; constant, faithful, honest, courteous and upright.
Culminating denotes honour, aiming at great things, a politician, lawyer, or divine. The native always rises higher in life than that in which he or she was born.
Leo 26º-30º rising at birth denotes a tallish, thin person, pock-
marked, swarthy face, dark eyes and hair, broad shoulders, short arms and legs, and awry gait. 30º dark and low; 26º tallish and light; 28º rather low and moderate complexion; Moon here, immodest. 27º rather stout and darkish, but good looking; 29º contains Cor Leo (Regulus), agrees with Mars and Jupiter, a prosperous face, and the natives are often aiming at honourable undertakings, and frequently raise themselves to power.
This face ascending shows a hasty, envious, repining person, rejoices at others losses, and contriving injuries.
Culminating manifests slight fleeting honour; makes a draper, clerk, or weaver; and if Mercury be there, will make a pleader of causes, a runner for a bailiff, policeman etc.
VIRGO
VIRGO gives a middle stature, inclined to be tall, slender, brown, ruddy complexion, dark brown hair, round face, small shrill voice, round head; in short, a well composed body; sentimental organs well developed.
Virgo 1º-5º rising at birth shows a person rather tall, brown complexion, thin beard (if male) brownish hair, broad forehead, the intellect good, Roman nose, narrow chin, long slender legs and feet. This face is ruled generally by Sun and Saturn, hence of a drying nature. Often tall, this face appears to bring out egotists and great pretenders to science. There is nothing else very remarkable. 4º good stature; 1º and 2º, low and stiff.
This face ascending produces a bold, arrogant, proud and conceited person; a mixture of subtlety and craft.
Culminating shows a person aiming at high things; if Sun or Mercury be there, attains preferment at court; if Jupiter or Uranus be there, from the church, or law; but if Mars be there, the native turns out to be but a mechanic, engineer, etc.
Virgo 6º-10º rising at birth shows a tall stature, oval face, brown complexion, sometimes pale, pleasant countenance, a good looking person. Vindiamatrix in 9º, nature of Saturn and Venus, rather unfortunate, but of an excellent disposition. Often become widows, etc.
This face ascending denotes a sober, honest, courteous person; affecting nothing but what the native is able to perform. If Jupiter, Sun or Venus be on the first house, this judgement will be confirmed.
Culminating - no durable honour, or great preferment; if Uranus or Mercury be there, the native proves to be an orator; if Venus, scarcely anything above a tailor, draper, or some other nancy (!) business; if the Sun be there, may be patronised by someone in a high position.
