The Lady Chapel

On entering the ruins (by the paying route) this is the first and most vivid view of the Norman chapel of St. Mary built on the site of the original wattle church. The trees, alas, are long gone
The ancient Norman doorway into the chapel, with steps to the crypt leading down from the right hand side A closer view of the decorated Norman doorway much as it appeared in 1960. The wooden bridge has since been replaced by a more "panoramic" structure. This will be seen in the pictures of the crypt, to follow Before the destruction of the Great Church of SS. Peter and Paul, St. Mary's chapel was joined to it by a wide passge known as The Gallilee. This is a rare view from 1809 Another rare view from 1809, but from the opposite side ... and another view c. 1909! A 1960 view from the other side of the bridge, showing the south side of the chapel A later view showing the south side of the chapel The names JESUS/MARIA on the wall of the south side of St. Mary's. It is not known who carved them, nor when St. Patrick's Chapel - requires CABLE or BROADBAND connection Return to Glastonbury Index
