PSYCHIC AVALON

The Abbot's Kitchen

Far to the right of the entrance, opposite the Lady Chapel, stands the abbot's kitchen. outwardly little touched. This view shows the Tor in the background (left). The trees are long gone.

Like other pictures in this Glastonbury presentation, this is taken from an old postcard, most of which date from the golden era of postcards dating from the earliest part of the 20th century, hence the attribution of c.1905 to so many. Some images were certainly made at the end of the 19th century, and saw multiple reproduction during the late Victorian years, which brought the arrival of the tourist. This being is still with us, and in catering for tourist requiremets, much of the wonder has been lost.

An old colour view

The entrance to the kitchen in 1960. The structure just visible through the doorway was a huge mirror to enable visitors to look up at the vauting in the roof without falling over backwards. If this is still with us, it has been moved, as the kitchen looks more like a visitor centre in modern times

An earlier view. Note the original oven on the right. The effigy of an abbot below the window, thought to be that of William Vigor, was placed there by a former owner, before the Abbey and grounds fell into the hands of the Church of England
