Women’s Quintet Unable to Defend Crown

THE SCIENCE WOMEN’S BASKETBALL TEAM placed third in the 1997-1998-basketball tournament after absorbing two painful losses to Pharmacy and long-time nemesis CAFA. The team which is also managed by Mr. Celso Nierra could only settle for third when they upended Commerce in the battle for the bronze.

The women’s team include Pia Panlaqui, Joanne Perez, Jacklene Catalig, Charlene Bonnin, Susan Iduyan, Ma. Arzineth Concepcion, Ma. Carmela Caringal, Marijay Utulo, Ma. Theresa Buenaflor, Lesley Manahan, Vivian San Luis, Therese Fermo, Luisa Cuizon and team captain Teresita de Guia, who also grabbed the win in the Christian Campus Ministry-sponsored three-point shootout contest.

Palaro Championships in the Hang

THE PALARONG AGHAM CHAMPIONSHIP ROUND is put to a hold as two previous plans of holding the finals did not materialize. After numerous incidents of game failures due to defaults, venue conflicts and the controversial black ribbon protest, the much-awaited affair remains in the hang. Concerned players are merely disgusted on the way things went, citing that their efforts of joining the event resulted in a trash.

In the previous Palaro, the championship games were held outside of the university and only two events were played that’s why women’s volleyball teams were crying "foul" unlike the Palarong Agham Finals ‘96, which took place at the Engineering Complex. This year, the original plan for the event was on the last day of the Science Week. It appears that the variety show overshadowed it. Then another plan came out to hold it on Feb. 23-24 and March 1-2, which was postponed also.

Those affected by the repeated hanging of the Palarong Agham Finals are the leaders of the three events. BioSoc and MathSoc are expected to clash in the basketball tussle while PsychSoc and MathSoc will meet for men’s volleyball. The BioSoc and PsychSoc are the tentative finalists in women’s volleyball. Not only does default affected the CSSC-sponsored event but time constraints. An instance occurred one time when the one-hour default time for basketball was wasted which made a little time to hold the scheduled women’s volleyball game and consequently, the latter wasn’t able to finish on time, postponing what could have been finished game in less than five minutes.

Science Profs Join USTFU Sports Festival

THE UST GYMNASIUM was the venue for the opening of the 1997 Faculty Sports Festival held last Nov. 14. The event which is sponsored by the University of Sto. Tomas Faculty Union (USTFU) aimed to "empower the faculty thru sports". The Science professors are among the members of the Green team together with the Institute of Religion and Pharmacy faculty members.

The sportsfest, which will continue until next school year is the most innovative move that USTFU has made for its members after controversies, struck the management of the union. This inter-building activity ranges from basketball to volleyball. Games like track and field, bowling among others are also included for the first holding of this all-faculty occasion.

Men’s Basketball Competition Ends

THIS YEAR’S 1997 Inter-Collegiate Basketball Tournament ended last Feb. 14, at the UST Gymnasium. The annual competition had a big field this year, having almost 20 participating teams from different colleges and faculties of the University.

The members of the Science Men’s Basketball team are Christian Tolentino, Aldous Keith Mojica, Mark Phillip Gochingco, Ardie Dizon, Jasper Guela, Gilbert Melgar, Eduardo Maddatu, Ricardo Dantes, Van Aldous Canda, Kenneth Co, Alvin Lim, Michael Ching, Paul Lleva and Benjamin Lim(team captain). The team was eliminated early in the competition.

Seven-A-Side Football Culminates Soccer Tourney

LIKEWISE, the University-wide Football Tournament drew to a close on Feb. 28 at the UST Main Football Field. This yearly competition has produced quite a number of talented players already playing either for the Varsity team in the UAAP or in the Manila Premiere Football League.

The Science Men’s Soccer Football team, managed by Mr. Rene Dilan of Chemistry, were also axed from the preliminaries. The team is composed of Carmelo Braganza, Meldon Cabarles, Nick dela Rosa, Mike Domingo, Glenn Ignacio, Joseph Laoag, Mohedin Lakay Mama-o, Reggie Martinez, Carlo Nasol, Lindsey Ochoa, Nelson Pasia, Randall Peña, Richard Rian, Nats Sison, Mon Soriano, Arnie Syquia, Louie Yasay and Blas Yu.

As a culminating affair, the organizers capped the tourney with the Thomas Cup 7-a-side football. It was an open tournament to all soccer aficionados who are in groups of seven. The fitting finale was a genuine idea as UST soccer fanatics joyfully embraced it as a large number of players were entered on the event. Science Women’s team took third place behind Varsity and AB. The Men’s team didn’t fare well in the event.
