Lectures on HIV Stephen Chua-Rojas
|
AS PART of its continuing lecture
series, the Dept. of Biological Sciences sponsored a seminar
entitled "The Role of Free Radicals,
Chemokines and Cytokines in immunopathogenesis of
HIV-1 in the liver having alcohol
intoxication". This seminar was held Dec. 18
at the Bulwagang Antonio Luna. Mrs. Milagros del Callar, chair of the BioSci
Department, introduced the guest speaker, Dr.
Abraham Bautista. He is currently an associate
professor of Physiology and Medicine at the
Louisiana State University Medical Center in New
Louisiana, USA. A Medical Technology alumnus of
Far Eastern Univeristy, he was a former faculty
member of the Department of Biological Sciences
here in the College of Science. A UNESCO fellow,
he was listed in the Who's Who list during the
Aquino regime.
Dr. Bautista
explained to the audience the structure of the
HIV virus, pointing out that it infects
leukocytes, a vital component of the immune
system. When gp120 a receptor found on HyIV links
with gp41, a transmembrane protein on the cell,
HIV is able to inject RNA into the host cell. He
stressed that alcohol intoxication will cause
free radical formation to cause further
pathogenesis of HIV, reduction of lymphocytes or
the "soldiers" of the immune system and
directly causes tumor formation on the liver.
