El Niño Crisis: Conserve Water and Energy

Michael Francis C. Andrada

WATER IS GOLD these days. With the onslaught of El Niño, Dr. Lucila Bance, College Secretary, is calling on students to exert extra effort to conserve water and energy.

Dr. Bance disclosed that UST has four major water tanks situated at the corners of the University. However, these reservoirs can only supply the whole University for half a day due to the rapid consumption of water. It was also noted that MWSS could fill these tanks in two hours time if the pressure is strong. Otherwise, more time is required. Since MWSS is rationing to UST in the morning and evening, water will be scarce. To combat the problem, the Dean’s Office solicited suggestions from students on how to effectively alleviate the condition of the water supply. This is part of the University-wide Awareness Campaign on the El Niño phenomenon.

Science students eagerly responded by submitting suggestions on how to minimize the effects of El Niño, particularly in the College. Many innovative and practical ideas were raised and these are still being considered. Ideas ranging from using disposable food utensils, putting water drums inside restrooms, to purchasing portable CR's and deepwells were sounded off by the students. The administration is taking some time out to think over the suggestions to arrive at clear conclusions.

I hope the students will also apply the measures in their own homes because the El Niño phenomenon is not just a University or College concern. It is a nationwide crisis that we should all be aware of," Dr. Bance advised.
