Artist: The Lodger
Title: Let Her Go (single)

By Conor Duffy

lodger singleThe latest single from Leeds three-piece The Lodger kicks off with a sparkling gem of a track that had me thinking of The Kinks. ‘Let Her Go' is an enjoyable ditty indeed, with a sound similar to the other angular Brit bands currently doing the rounds, yet somehow managing to sound poppier. It also had me think of the Boo Radleys' ‘Wake up Boo' and since I always loved that song, that's fine with me.

B-Side ‘We Come From The Same Place' is a little slower and sadder, but still really catchy. This time there's more of a jangly, almost Sixties vibe to proceedings. When frontman Ben sings, “Wish it could stay like this” you understand that it simply can't, and whatever situation the protagonists in this song currently find themselves in, it is soon coming to an end. It's the sort of track that pulls at your heartstrings without sounding forced or soppy.

I've never been entirely impressed with The Lodger before, but this single has me reconsidering the group. A few more songs in the vein of the ones featured here would certainly not be sniffed at.
