Artist: Forest Giants
Title: Welcome To The Mid-West

By Conor Duffy

forest giants mid westThe ‘Planes Fly overhead' single? Merely a taster for this beauty of an album. And while I may have had my doubts about Forest Giants' previous release, that is certainly not the case here.

It starts, like all good guitar albums should start, with a fantastic melodic rocker, complete with distorted vocals and laser gun sound effects. It sets the tone well for the rest of the record.

The spectre of My Bloody Valentine looms large over songs like ‘Wasted', all layers of guitar forming one great mass that's remarkably catchy and poppy in its own way. Even when things take a slower bent, as on ‘The Message', it retains that catchiness and hummability (yes, that's a word I've just made up. Sue me.)

‘Stars' is the perfect dreamy track for these sunny Summer days, while ‘Namesakes' starts slowly and builds up wonderfully. ‘Reverse Outro 3', meanwhile, is the perfect trippy end to this album.

All in all Forest Giants have crafted something truly great here. One to put on your “to buy” list, pronto.
