Artist: Napoleon IIIrd
Title: EP

By Conor Duffy

napoleon iiird coverWell, at least I got this one reviewed in time. This EP comes out next Monday, the debut recording by Napoleon IIIrd, and it's quite fab. Opener 'Anti Patria' can't fail to raise a smile, as it's filled with a childish wonder and joie de vie, like the Polyphonic Spree jamming with The Jimmy Cake. 'Celebrity Standups' only pulls the smile wider until it almost hurts, even when Napoleon IIIrd is trying to sound sad. He can't deny himself, though, so this heartlifting piece is filled to the brim with crackles, blips, bloops and brass.

I'd complain that it was way too short if 'No Science' didn't come in, sounding like a marching band on mushrooms. The only problem with these great sounds means you don't end up listening to the lyrics, which at times are quite clever.

By the time we get to 'You Destroy Music', you begin to question how much more of this you can take. It starts to all get just a bit too out of control. Napoloeon IIIrd knows this, so he puts a more conventional twist on this track. Of course, the occassional freak-out comes to the fore, so Napoleon's best efforts are for nought. Then again, when the alien vocals come in you start wondering if that's what he had in mind all along.

My God, he's an evil genius! He's created wonderful pieces of nutso pop so that we shall all go insane. At least we'll be laughing all the way to the funny farm. Napoleon IIIrd, I salute you.
