(from Alvin Patrimonio Special Magazine of Scorecoard, November 1994)

ALVIN PATRIMONIO. - Mention the name alone and what comes to mind? Power basketball. Glamour. Two-time (going three?) Most Valubale Player Awardee. Twenty-five million pesos.

Indeed, now you know why every Tom, **** and Harry wants to be in his shoes. Hey, who wouldn’t be in the first place, huh? This guy, Alvin is simply one helluva lucky man.

Fan or no fan of Patrimonio, who’s currently at the forefront of Purefoods bid to wangle another PBA Title, Scoreboard now bares this dossier on the man who’s considered by most present day kibitzers as the greatest basketeer to have hit Philippine hoopdom. Mismo!

1. Alvin Patrimonio was born on November 17, 1966. (Horoscope sign: Scorpio). He is fondly called by close friends as Buboy.

2. Alvin’s early beginnings in the world of basketball started when as a young boy of 10, he would join inter-community cage tournaments where he would consistently emerge as the Most Valuable Player awardee. His idol was Andy Fields, the import of Toyota then. Alvin would at that early age, roll around a piece of towel, imagine it as a ball and then shoot in a ring.

3. He is second in a brood of four children born to Angel Patrimonio and the former Ophelia Vergara. His siblings are Allen, Jonjon and his only sister Angelie.

4. Alvin took up his elementary education at Ellinwood School and his high school at Manila Science. He subsequently enrolled at Mapua Institute of Technology.

5. At MIT, he took up Civil Engineering where he reached up to third year college. He was getting good grades in his studies until his many basketball commitments took their toll and eventually surrendered his hopes of earning a college degree.

6. His early frustrations in basketball included the following bummer trails: Before going to MIT, he tried out for La Salle with the hope of making it to the varsity squad but was subsequently discarded from the official line-up. He tried out for the National Youth Team in the early 80’s but failed to make the cut for the final 15. His first six games with the MIT Cardinals in the NCAA were all losses.

8. His first PBL (then PABL) team was Hope where he got a P4,000 monthly allowance. His next tsop was YCO (now disbanded). During his stint with the YCO Waxmasters in the PABL (1986), Alvin was adjudged Most Valuable Player of the tournament, was named Rookie of the Year and earned a grandslam of sorts by capturing the King of slum Dunk Title.

9. After YCO disbanded in 1987, Alvin transferred to the RFM ballclub where he strutted his stuff for Swift Hotdogs.

10. Before his contract with Swift could expire, the Purefoods Hotdogs team gave Alvin an offer he couldn’t refuse. Alvin requested Swift if it could release him, a full six months before his contract would expire in December 1988. Alvin was eventually signed up by Purefoods in the middle of 1988 in time for the All-filipino conference. His first game as a professional was against the Presto team. 19. It was actually Pepsi which tendered an offer sheet worth P25 million when Alvin’s first contract with Purefoods would not match that offer sheet but got the surprise of their lives when Rene Buhain and Don Jaime Zobel, Purefoods’ big bosses, finally matched the Pepsi proposal.

He has several fans club, the most active of which is the Solid Alvin Patrimonio Fans club.

2003: Some facts remembered  by idolkosicap based from what she had red before..... (thanks idolkosicap)

1: Alvin will be celebrating his 36th birthday on November 17. Most people now call him “Cap”.

2: Alvin used to play in their backyard against his much bigger relatives

3: His father Angel died a few years back due to a lingering illness.

4: Alvin still wants to study in the future if he’ll have the time but he wont continue with his course and just take maybe a computer course.

7: Alvin has joined other RP teams, making it to four Asian Games.

11: Alvin has been under a number of coaches including Ramon Fernandez, Cris Calilan, Dalupan, Ely Capacio, Chot Reyes, Eric Altamirano, Chito Narvasa, Derrick Pumaren and Ryan Gregorio. He’s also now into assistant coaching and may get into head coaching in the future.

12: Alvin no longer pursued a showbiz career and just concentrated on basketball which is a good choice.

15. The lady friend was Jill so it was named Jerry Jill & Alvin’s Bakeshop.

16. His three kids are Angelo James, Christine and Clarice. Alvin and Cindy do want to have another child but Cindy may have a difficult time because she had an ectopic pregnancy a few years back.

17. 16 was the jersey number of his father Angel so he chose that number.

18 Alvin still has one of the biggest contracts in the PBA.

19 Alvin has stayed with Purefoods eversince and he wants to retire with Purefoods.

20: Alvin now has four season MVP’s, 1991, 1993, 1994 and 1997. He’s trying for a 5th one but if it does not come, it’s okay, he’s already made his mark.

21: His other idol is Robert Jaworski. It was Ramon Fernandez who advised Alvin to marry early so he can concentrate on his career and family.

22: The Patrimonio family still lives in their Cainta home which has undergone some renovations. Their neighbors include Rina Jimenez David and Elmer Yanga.

25: He has done other commercials aside from those already mentioned including the “Sali” commercial for a milk product, the “Batang Alvin” for Purefoods and the latest is his commercial with son Angelo for Growee.

26: He still treats his fans so well that’s why he remains to be well-loved by fans and non-fans. The Solid Alvin Patrimonio Fan Club is still around, still avidly showing their support.

27: Kris considers Alvin as her first True Love and even entertained the thought that they can get back together during the time when Alvin and Cindy were having marital problems. Alvin is the love Kris never got and I wonder if she has really gotten over Alvin as she mentioned in her column some months back. It’s a good thing Alvin made the right decision to stick it out with Cindy.

28: Alvin, Cindy and their kids are now with Victory for Christ Church where they attend Sunday services somewhere in Greenhills. Alvin is an active member of Champions for Christ.
