FIBROSITIS (Fibromyalgia)

Pain guide

Fibrositis is a relatively common form of nonarticular rheumatism. The condition is characterized by diffuse musculoskeletal aching associated with multiple tender points in soft tissues. It affects chiefly women in the fourth through sixth decades of life. Associated symptoms include morning stiffness, fatigue, headache, neck pain, and sleep disturbances. Laboratory tests are noncontributory. Fibrositis usually occurs in the absence of any other disease, and it may be mimicked by polymyalgia rheumatica or rheumatoid arthritis. Attention to the sleep disorder may lead to improvement in the symptom complex; tricyclic antidepressants in low doses may help. Cardiovascular fitness training may also be of value.
