BURSITIS

Pain guide

Inflammation of the synoviumlike cellular membrane overlying bony prominences may be secondary to trauma, infection, or arthritic conditions. The most common locations are the subdeltoid, olecranon, ischial, and prepatellar bursae. Clinically and anatomically, this syndrome can be differentiated from adjacent inflammatory disorders of tendons, and the attacks may suggest an arthritic process. On occasion, calcific deposits arc noted on x-rays of the involved bursae.

Various methods of treatment have been used, including local heat, immobilization, analgesics. nonsteroidal antiinflammatory agents, and local steroid injections. Infected bursae usually require surgical drainage or aspiration and antibiotic therapy.
