Karl Marx was an atheist, conscious materialist, and informed socialist.  In 1845 he was the leader of the German communists. With his friend Engels he founded a secret society of German communists or authoritarian socialists.  Together they also published the Communist Manifesto and other political documents.

Marx saw his life's work as the provision of an understanding of a theory, which would enable people to organize their lives and fulfil their dreams.  Genuine freedom could only result from open and critical theory.

Dr. Ronald Price was introduced to Marx by The Selected Works of Karl Marx, part of a 400 volume unit library sent with British soldiers in World War II.  Reading this book and observing the "Great Proleterian Cultural Revolution" in China (mid 1960's) made him ponder Marxism, and Mao Zedong's version of it.  He argues that Marx is relevant to education today.
