is an arid country in the Southern African region. Formerly South West Africa, it was a protectorate of South Africa until it gained its independence in 1990. This followed the introduction of United Nations Resolution 435. The country has a low summer rainfall, with a minimum of 50mm per year in the Namib Desert, and a high rainfall of just more than 500mm per year in the Caprivi (the far northeastern region). Namibia borders South Africa in the South, Botswana in the East and Angola in the North. Through the extension of the Caprivi strip in the far northeast, it also borders Zambia and Zimbabwe.
