We are listed on the Ratster and register all of our rats with the North American Rat Registry.
At Echo Rattery, we pride ourselves on continuing education. We strive to become knowledgable and efficient in all areas of rat keeping and breeding, from laboratory animal care to veterinary practice building to innovative new pet products at retail. We support and attend continuing education seminars from RSA to CVC. We have an extensive veterinary medical, laboratory animal science and pet business library with relevent periodicals. Echo Rattery utilizes university libraries, especially the MSU Veterinary Medical Center library. We are members of numerous rat-specific, veterinary and pet business organiziations.
We breed to the RSA standard, focusing on temperament, health, type and coat. No single aspect is to be singled out or ignored.
All of our rats receive veterinary care when needed. If there is an unexpected death, a death of a breeding animal or a series of deaths or illnesses, suspect rats will be necropsied by a qualified pathologist. We have health surveillance and maintain a quality assurance program for health. Echo Rattery is a closed rattery with a few exceptions. For those exceptions, a strict, long quarantine and shower in/shower out is required for everyone, and negative rattery results for the core pathogens are required for rat owners as well.
The food, bedding, enclosures and other resources Echo Rattery uses are of high standard, with complete nutrition, sanitary conditions and proper ventilation to take the highest priority.
Accurate records of every illness, veterinary visit, death, birth and other significant event are maintained and made public. Pedigrees are always accurate to the best ability possible, given that pedigrees often rely on other breeders for information.
We do not involve ourselves with rat-related politics. We call things as we see them. We don't believe that "who said what" or "who is friends with who" should have any role in creating better rats. Other ratteries are judged simply by what they have done for rats. This is not a popular stance, but one that we feel benefits rats the most. The fancy rat is too important to let personal feelings get involved in decisions.
