Weird Photo at a Lava Flow

A group of friends and I visited the Big Island in October 1994. We mostly visited natural sites and explored the virgin rain forest. As our grand finale, we hiked up to Hale Maumau - the caldera of Kilauea (the volcano currently errupting) AND the abode of the legendary Pele (the Hawaiian fire goddess) on Halloween night.

I grabbed several shots of the group in front of the lava flows, as well as a couple of just the lava. I made a point of using a flash when people were involved, but purposefully turned it off for landscapes. When I developed the roll, I was in for a surprise. The face of a native showed up in one of my photos. The local kahuna identified the individual as Madam Pele.

This photo has been shuffled through the years and shows its age, but this is the best scan I can get of it. I scanned in at 600dpi then used Fireworks to scale it to an appropriate size. I used the default settings on my scanner for color, brightness, and contrast. For some reason, the face in the scan shows up red instead of brown, and I can't figure out the smudge on the cheek
