1. REFLECTION ON THE RE-AWAKING EAST.

Russel gives a brief history of the transfer of power from East to West and from West to East. He comes to the conclusion that now the East is re-awakening. East and West have been powerful by turns for two thousand years. First the East had leadership in its hands. It was both more civilized and powerful than the West. The West took over the leadership and civilization with the rise of Greece and in power with the conquests of Alexander. It remained in power for seven or eight centuries. It lost this position through the wars between Romans and Germans.

The East rose with the conquests of Islam during the caliphate period. It made astonishing developments in the field of science. Philosophy and art. The West was sunk in darkness and ignorance in those days.

In 16th century the West was again prevailed all over the world. It brought many countries of the world under its domination. Europe had made great progress. It has developed a new civilization. The new civilization is based on machines and science. The people of the West have discovered the secrets of atoms and stars. The progress of science has made our life healthy and comfortable. It has given the people a great power. Russel hopes that the Asians should accept this thing from the West. They should advance themselves in science and machinery. But at the same time, the Western civilization has brought many ills. Therefore Russel gives some advises to the Asian countries.

The Western people misused their power. They exploit the weak nations of the East. They are careless about morals and religion. They used their knowledge for destruction of others. Russel is sure that the Asian countries will not follow the West in this field.

But after 1914 Europe became weak and its freedom became in danger due to the unity of Russia and China. The grip of the West is loosing over the Eastern countries.

Russel believes that industry and machine are two great sources of power. Asia could only progress if it industrializes itself. The Asian countries should not copy the mistakes of the West. It should not use power for conquering other nations. It should be used only for bringing peace and prosperity to the world.

Russel suggests that a third group should be made in Asia. All peace loving nations should join it. He appreciated the great culture of Asians. He says that there are at least three civilizations in India. These are the Islam, the Indian and the Chinese. All these civilization should develop independently.

4. THE DAY DAM BROKE.

It was busy day in Columbus in 1913. The people were busy in their daily works. Suddenly a man began to run. He had to meet his wife in a restaurant and he was late. A newsboy also ran after him. Soon other persons started moving fast. Nobody cared to look into the matter. With in ten minutes everybody on High street was running. Saying, "go east". The dam has broken. Soon the news spread all over the city and people began to run in fear. Everybody tried to get a safe place. All persons working in factories, offices and shops, came out on the streets. Women cooking food in their houses and people sitting in the cinema houses also came out. All started running.

The author’s mother, father and grandfather also left their house and moved to the East. His mother took with her a dozen eggs and two loaves of bread because her plan was to go to the Memorial Hall and to stay there in the upper storey. Grandfather of the author refused to leave the house. He was stricken on the head. He became unconscious and was carried away.

The panic started even in cinema house. When people heard the sound of the feet of running men outside. One of the men inside the hall also ran out. Everyone followed him. The author’s Aunt Edith Taylor was sitting in a theatre when the panic started. She also ran out.

A Lieutenant Colonel was sleeping. He heard that some one cry "go east". He began to run like a child, repeating the same words. Someone asked the Colonel why he was running. He asked the child the child the same question, when the child told him that the dam had broken, the Colonel repeated these words to the first man and ran at a greater speed. With in an hour, the Colonel was leading a crowd of some 300 people, all running towards east.

In this way all the people ran out of the town. The shouting, weeping and running lasted for about two hours. They did not confirm the rumours. They behaved foolishly. At last the Army announced through loud speakers that the dam has not broken. After the struggle of two hours, fear was removes. The people came to know the fact and were ashamed.
