        Ans. The Pakistan Resolution decided to have a separate homeland for the Muslims of India.

      3. BIRKENHEAD DRILL.

Q. 1: When and where did the Birkenhead sink?

Ans. The Berkenhead sank in 1851 near Cape Town.

Q. 2: What kinds of people were being carried as passengers on the Birkenhead?

Ans. The Birkenhead was carrying British soldiers and their families.

Q. 3: How did the Birkenhead come to be wrecked?

Ans. The Birkenhead struck against a hidden rock in the sea. No member of her crew was to blame.

Q. 4: Why was their lifeboat accommodation for only 180 people after the collision with the rock?

Ans. After the collision of the ship with the rock all the boats were either destroyed or damaged,

only three were in good condition, which could carry 180 persons, sixty each.

Q. 5: Was there enough room in the lifeboats for all the women and children on board?

Ans. Yes, there was enough room for all the women and children on board. Even a few old persons

were able to get a place in these boats.

Q. 6: What would probably have happened had there been a panic?

Ans. If there had been a panic, none out of 630 on board would have been saved. The weaker ones

would have been trampled under the feet or pushed into the sea. The boats might have got

over loaded and sunk under the weight. In that case perhaps all of then would have died.

Q. 7: Describe the behavior of the soldiers while the women and children escaped in the boats?

Ans. They did not show any panic. They were very calm and peaceful as if they were standing on

they're daily drill. Their discipline was exemplary.

Q. 8: Were many of the men rescued who remained on the sinking ship? How did the survivors

among those left on the ship manage to save themselves?

Ans. No, only a few were rescued and those who survived they did so by getting gold of the

wreckage of the ship. Some of them were picked up by a rescue ship later on. So the number

of people saved not more then 24.

Q. 9: Describe one heroic action that took place after the Berkenhead went down?

Ans. The commander of the ship made heroic action after the Birkenhead went down. He Ws

clicking to a plank. Suddenly he saw two young soldiers struggling for their life. He pushed

the plank towards then. Soon he found that it could not support all three of them. He let it go.

He chose death for him to save others.

Q. 10: Were the troop on the board the Birkenhead experienced and used to facing danger? How do

we know that they behaved with gallantry and discipline up to the very last?

Ans. The soldiers on board were mostly inexperienced, they were not used to facing danger. We

know about their gallantry through an officer who was saved.
