THE COUNT OF MORCERF.

The Count of Morcerf was the villain of the play. His real name was Farnand Monmdego. He became interested in a girl named Mercedes, knowing that she was engaged to Edmond Dantes (the Count of Monte Cristo) and he married her through fraud.

The Count of Morcerf was involved Edmind Dantes in a false case by providing false evidence against him as a result of which an innocent person was sent to prison for fourteen long years. Thus only to get his love he played such an evil role in order to remove his rival from his way. He married Mercedes, assuring her that Edmond Dantes was dead. This shows that he was ready to do anything for his benefit.

The Count of Morcerf was a traitor to his country. He was not a patriot. When he was in French army, he had sold the fortress of Yanina to the Turks without fighting. He was so careless that he gave everything in writing in the presence of the witnesses which was later on provide as evidence before the Chamber of Deputies. As a result of which he was proved as a traitor. He was unable to deny the charges and was punished for his evil deeds.

The Count of Morcerf was a cruel and mean person. Although he married Mercedes, he could not keep her happy. She often complained about his rude behavior. She found him a mean and heartless person. She told the Count of Monte Cristo that after her marriage his treatment with her was not good. Therefore she had no sympathy for him when he was publically disgraced. Even his son Albert realized that his father’s attitude towards the Count of Monte Cristo was not good, therefor his sympathy was with his father’s enemy.

The Count of Morcerf was not so brave to face his enemy. After his disgrace, he did not make any efforts to find out his enemy. He left everything to the young and inexperienced Albert. We expect that Morcerf would challenge his rival to a duel and fight with him but he did not come forward to meet his enemy. This shows that he was a coward. On the other hand Morcerf knew well that the Count of Monte Cristo was an excellent shooter and Albert might be killed in the duel, yet he inspired Albert to fight the due. When Albert apologized to the Count of Monte Cristo. Morcerf decided to fight a duel and took out a pistol to kill an unarmed person. Beauchamp and Albert rushed forward to prevent him from firing but the pistol went off and he was killed with his own bullet.

The Count of Morcerf was very greedy. He wanted to earn wealth through illegal means and took bribe to become rich. Because of hid criminal acts, he played the role of a villain in the play. When he was finally killed with his own bullet, the readers feel that justice had been done.

BEAUCHAMP.

Beauchamp was a friend of Albert. He was the Editor of a daily newspaper in Paris. Some articles were published in his newspaper against the Count of Morcerf. A lady appeared as a witness in the court to show that the Count of Morcerf took bribe from the Turks. The court examined the documents and declared that Morcerf is a traitor. Albert thought that some unknown person had dishonoured his family. Therefore he wanted to take his friend Beauchamp to find him out. Beauchamp succeeded in finding Monte Cristo had published the charges against his father. Albert declared that he was going to fight a duel with Monte Cristo. He asked beauchamp to become his second. He was very sincere friend.
