Sticks and Stones

By Assilem

Boston MASS. May 1958

As Charles Emerson Winchester 111 walked into his office for the first time he felt something, something that would plague him until he did something. He walked over to his desk and noticed something, something that he never took out.

"SHANNON!" He bellowed, as his secretary walked in.

"Yes Doctor?"

"What is this?" He asked as he held up a photo.

"Oh, I was cleaning up in here and I found it in your draw so I thought that maybe you wanted it on your desk."

"Shannon how many times have I told you not to go through my desk."

"I’m sorry Doctor, but when I found it, I saw you," Shannon paused. "You looked happy."

Charles stared at the picture. "Well let me say this, I was as happy as I was going to get there."

"Who are they?"

"These are my comrades from when I was in Korea."

"I mean their names."

"This is Colonel Potter." He said pointing to an older man. "The man with the mustache is BJ Hunnicut, the one wearing the dress in Maxwell Klinger, the small one is Radar O’Rielly,"

"What about these two?" Shannon asked pointing to Hawkeye and Margaret.

"That is Margaret Houlihan, she was our head nurse, and that is the illustrious Hawkeye Pierce."

"Hawkeye?"

"Yes, it’s a nickname his father got from,"

"The Last of the Mohicans, I’ve read it. What’s his first name?"

"Benjamin, no one called him that."

"A practical joker I take it?"

"Yes, but how did you know?"

"He has the same twinkle in his eyes as my brother does."

"I see."

"Doctor, Charlotte called, she wants you to call her as soon as you can."

"Thank you, anything else?"

"Um, yes, you five o’clock has been canceled so you’re off for the night and you have a nine-thirty tomorrow morning."

"Thank you."

"Is there anything I can get you?"

"Yes, there is actually. Could you get the number for a Doctor Benjamin Franklin Pierce, it might be under Hawkeye."

"Yes Doctor, where does he live?"

"Maine, Crabapple Cove, you should start there."

"Okay, I’ll have it too you by the morning."

"Thank you Shannon."

"No problem Doctor. I’ll see you in the morning."

"Yes. Goodnight."

"You too." With that Shannon walked out of his office. Charles sat down in his chair and picked up the picture again. Then he turned to another picture on his desk, this of a petite blonde, himself and a little brunette. He smiled and picked up the phone.

"Hello."

"Hello Charlotte."

"HI Charles, how was your day?"

"Same as always, my dear. How was your day?"

"Good, Emma and I went to the park."

Charles smiled as the name of his two-year-old daughter. "Well I called to return your call."

"Oh, I was just wondering what time you were coming home, Shannon said that you five o’clock was still ‘up in the air’ as she put it."

"I shall be home soon. Can you keep Emma awake until then?"

"Charles she doesn’t go to bed until eight-thirty, don’t worry she’ll be up."

"Thank you."

"You’re welcome."

"Well I am going to hang up and come home."

"Okay Charles, I’ll see you soon."

"Yes. I love you Charlotte."

"I love you too Charles." Charles smiled and hung up his phone. He picked up the photo of the 4077th personal, and put it back into his desk draw. With that he walked out of his officer

"Good morning Shannon, is my husband in?" Charlotte asked.

"No, not at the moment, Mrs. Winchester, but you are welcome to go on in."

"Thank you."

"How are you?"

"I’m good thank you, and yourself?"

"Pretty good, and how is Emma?" Shannon asked leaning down to the two-year-old who was holding her mother’s hand.

"Good." Emma replied.

"She’s getting so big, I remember when she was barley and hour old." Shannon commented picking up the little girl and handing her a lollipop. "Is she allowed?"

"Yes. And yes so do I. It feels like just yesterday I found out that I was pregnant with her."

"Mrs. Winchester, has Doctor Winchester ever talk the people he met in Korea?"

"No, why do you ask?"

"Well I was cleaning yesterday and I found a picture of these men and a woman. I asked him who they were and he was rather, how can I say it, compassionate about them."

"Yes, I’ve noticed. I believe that’s the reason we had to named Emma, Emma Jermaine."

"What do you mean?"

"Well he told me who they were, and they were the closest people in his life during those two years he was there. And I basically used my brain. I’m pretty sure the J stands for BJ, the E is for Maxwell, R Sherman, M for Margaret, A for Walter, I for Benjamin, and the N and the E are just there I believe, I honestly don’t know."

"Thank you."

"Thank you for what?" Charles asked as he walked towards his office.

"For letting me play with Emma." Shannon replied.

"I see. Good morning Charlotte." Charles greeted her with a kiss on the cheek. "And how is my Emma?" He asked picking up the little girl.

"Good." She said hugging he father.

"Doctor, I got that number you asked for. And I have a couple messages, one from Dr. MacIntyre from pediatrics, and another one from Dr. Webster, he moved you twelve-thirty, to Tuesday at two."

"Thank you Shannon."

"You’re welcome Doctor. Well I better get back to work. It was nice speaking to you Mrs. Winchester I hope to see you soon, and Emma you just don’t let your father our of your site, okay?" The two-year-old nodded her head and smiled.

"Well I have to go and get some paperwork, I’ll be right back." Shannon smiled and left.

"I see Shannon is working out."

"Yes, she is a great help."

"So what was this number you needed?"

"A number for a colleague of mine." He replied sharply. "I’m sorry Charlotte."

"That’s all right Charles, what do you say to some lunch?"

"Thank you, I would enjoy spending lunch with Emma." He teased.

"Ha, ha." Charlotte replied with a smile. "Now come on, Emma needs to have lunch then a nap. And you need to get back to work." Charles smiled and held out his arm for his wife to take and they walked off.

After lunch and a meeting Charles went back to his office. He sat down at his desk and picked up the receiver of the phone and went to dial a number. "Shannon!"

"Yes Doctor?"

"Where did the number you gave me go?"

"Well knowing you, you lost it. But don’t worry I have it written down somewhere else." She smiled and walked out, and came back a minute later. "The first one is his home number, he’ll be there after five PM and before nine AM. The second one is his office; he would be there between nine AM and noon; and the third number is the hospital number he’ll be there between noon and five PM. The office secretary name is Sherry and hospital’s secretary’s name is Elaine, they sound alike but I can assure you they aren’t. Now the number at his house, he might not be there, so I have another number for ‘Marty’s Grill’ he’s usually there for dinner, and from what I hear the lobster is to die for."

"How do you know all this?"

"Oh, the operator. She’s certainly got his number, I can tell you that. She knows everything about him. Now back to what I was saying. The forth number Daniel Pierce’s number, his father. You can leave a message with him."

"Thank you, is that all?"

"Yes, well have fun."

"I will thank you." Shannon smiled and walked out. Charles yet again reached for the receiver, and picked it up, he dialed the number to the hospital.

"Hello Crabapple Cove General, this is Elaine, how may I help you?" Answered a cheery voice.

"Hello, may I please speak to Dr. Pierce."

"He’s in surgery at the moment, may I take a message?"

"Uh, yes please, could you tell him that ‘Chuckles’ called, and too call him as soon as he’s done."

"Of course, may I take your number and any time you’ll be available. I’m sorry Dr. Pierce has been getting a lot of calls lately, and he wants numbers and names and times that you’ll be available."

"That’s all right. The number is 515-5165, and I’ll be available at that number until six thirty, and after that at 511-5648."

"Thank you. And he’ll get back to you as soon as he can."

"Thank you."

"You’re welcome. Have a good day."

"You too."
