Puerto Plata versus Punta Cana
Both are very nice regions in their own right and both are situated on the Atlantic side of the island.  The Puerto Plata area is more for the person looking for more things to do outside the resort area. The beaches on the north coast are nice but they just cannot compare to those in Punta Cana.
There is of course the major town of Puerto Plata in this area but there are also a selection of small villages along the coast not far from many of the All Inclusive Resorts in this region. Some of the resorts are within walking distance of a small community while others offer shuttle services to them. The Puerto Plata region would be more to the liking of someone wanting to explore a little of the local culture outside the confines of the resort. There are lots of little restaurants, bars, and shops situated in these villages for the adventurous tourist.
Punta Cana is more for the becah person. The resorts in this region all all situated around the beach. The beach is one long palm lined stretch with most of the resorts running along the same stretch of beach. If you wanted to you could walk for miles in either direction along the beach from resort to resort. However the distance from the beginning to end does not make this possible.
