My Thoughts on
Catalonia Bavaro
Punta Cana
My rating:
3 1/2 stars
Even though the buildings and grounds at Catalonia Bavaro were very impressive, of the resorts we have visited this would be our least favorite. Don't get me wrong it had some nice features but we had a bad time here and was not overly disappointed to leave for home  after 12 days.
The service at this resort was some of the worse we have ever experienced. The front desk staff started off badly the first day by giving me the room keys to someone elses room. Not once, not twice, but three times. Then I had to argue for a TV remote and pouch. They supposedly didn't have any left even though there was a counter full of them behind the desk. I had e-mailed my a la carte bookings and they had been confirmed through e-mail. However once I got there and waited in the usual line for 20-30 mins they couldn't find my bookings nor would they let me make new reservations. I had to go back the next day to the public relations desk to get it sorted out. It's just not a good way to start off one's vacation. The service at the bars and restaurants was terrible most of the time. You always had to get your own drinks at the restuarants and sometimes your table was given away while you were up getting your food. My friend and I started eating in shifts so one was always at the table. At the bars it usually took 20 mins to place your order because the staff were usually busy talking among themselves or on the phone.
The food was the same meal after meal. In fact the same trays of food from lunch were out again for supper. The a la cartes were alright but nothing special. One had unknown meat served on swords. Another had good food but cold and very slow service. The Japanese was nice but was a set meal. The French food was good but the servcie again sucked.
The room at Catalonia was very nice. We especailly liked the hammock and rocker on the terrace. The bathroom had a jacuzzi tub - but the tub room had no door and the water pressure and temperature was not good. Our maid was not the best. She for one thing was very loud and would shout back and forth with some other staff. She had no regular schedule for cleaning the room which was guite inconvienient. She walked in on my friend one day when he was getting ready to soak in the tub - again there was no door for him to close.
The seperate shopping area at this resort was set up like a little village and included an ice-cream/crepe restaurant which was very nice.Service here however was on the slow side.
The grounds here were very nice with covered walkways down each side of the buildings and a middle garden pathway with ponds.
The pool area here was also very nice and the place we spent most of our time. The pool bar however did not have good service and no place to sit down at the barexcept at the swim-up bar which was usual therefore quite busy.
The beach was very nice for sitting in the shade or sun but not too nice for swimming since there was a lot of seaweed and rocks on the bottom. The resort was also very isolated which in itself can be a plus. The closest resorts were over an hour's walk away. But that meant there was alot of deserted beach to walk along.
