Every holiday have their own history. This one's a history of where our "Happy Valentine's Day" greeting began.

Way way back at the year 270 A.D., marriage was banned by the Roman Emperor Claudius II. He thought that married man are not good soldiers because they are attached to their wives and children. Being married doesn't want them to go to war. This was the time when war was everywhere.

Inspite of this law, a priest named Valentine secretly performs wedding ceremonies to couples in love in a secret place. When the emperor had found out about Valentine's doings, he wanted to save the priest from execution by converting him to the Roman Gods. But the good priest refuses. So he was jailed.

While in prison, he had befriend a prison guard named Asterius. Asterius had a daughter who had lifted Valentine's spirit. On the day before he was executed, he borrowed a pen and a paper from Asterius. He wrote a farewell letter with the phrase "From Your Valentine". That day was February 14, 270. And so, that day was being celebrated by the whole world in remembrance of what St. Valentine did, a martyr for the couples in love.
