[Front desk at Ward 17 where Nelson is telling everyone what rooms they are on.]

Nelson: Paula you’ve got rooms 6, 7 and 9. *Paula nods* Make sure you’re on top of your discharge paperwork, its been err… messy.

Jared: Matt, Lana Dawsett has got an old MRN number can you check with medical records?

Matt: Will do.

Nelson: Jared you’ve only got room 2 could you add rooms 8 and 10 please. And also could you order more pethedine from pharmacy *hands Jared files while Bron shrugs* Looks like it’s your lucky day Bron! Two discharges Dianne Ellis and Mrs Goolack.

Bron:  I’ll be making the coffees.

Nelson: And Matt will arrange your x-ray bookings for Ms Willis.

[Inside Alana Dawsons room, Jared is there, the bed is empty and her canula has been pulled out.]

[Dr. Luke Forlano walks through the swing doors into Ward 17]

Luke: Matt, Lana Dawsett you got her file? *Matt hands the file to Luke*

*Terri walks into the desk area followed by Jared*

Jared: Lana’s gone.

Terri: What, where is she?

Jared: I don’t know but she’s pulled out her canula.

Terri: Umm, Okay I’ll check the bathrooms, *gestures to Jared* can you check the other floors, Paula can you check the rooms.

[Camera to Lana opening door leading to balcony, another patient (Chloe) is sitting in a chair next to the door. Lana moves a chair next to the railings, she starts to get on to the chair. Terri sees Lana through the glass door and walks towards them, once she sees that Lana is planning to jump she runs she now is frantically trying to open the door to the balcony.]

Terri: LANA!

Jared: Lana no!

[Terri gets the doors open but by the time she has reached the railings Lana has jumped.]

:: opening CREDITS ::

[Ward 17, patient being wheeled through doors by a orderly.]

Nurse from Emergency: Claire Hobson.

Von: Mine. *walks towards them*

Terri: *walks in* Okay, Matt can you call security and tell them that a patient fell from an east wing balcony. And let the switchboard know, Bron could you look after Chloe please.

Von: Do you want me to come with…

Terri: No I don’t, Paula.

Matt: *into phone* East side of the building thanks.

Nurse from Emergency: *to Von* I’m going to have to get back to Emergency this is Claire…

Von: *holding files* I’ve got the details. *Nurse walks out* Hello Claire I’m Von and I’m going to get you settled in.

Claire: That poor person.

Von: Pardon?

Claire: The one who fell.

Von: I’m sorry you weren’t meant to hear that *to Orderly* Room 1.

Claire: I’ve got good hearing, loosing your eyesight does that.

[Back to doors and a new patient is being wheeled in on a trolley, he has a oxygen mask on his face]

Orderly: Peter Talbert, Neuro patient.

Peter: I just want to go home I’ll be okay after a rest.

Bill: It’s alright.

Nelson: Peter, I’m Nelson Curtis I’ll be looking after you, *to Orderly* room 4.

Peter:  Hi.

Bill: I’m his brother, Bill.

[Peter is being wheeled into room]

Peter: Could someone ring my wife and let her know where I am please, Bill won’t do it! *Nelson and Bill follow behind*

Bill: *to Nelson* His wife died 18 months ago.

[Shot of ambulance in the grounds of All Saints, Rebecca gets out and grabs her gear from the truck, Ben, Paula and Terri and walking around in the distance. Camera pans to Jared who on the grounds staring up towards the balcony.]

Ben: *to Jared* Don’t tell me she just got up and walked off.

Scott: Three story drop, are you kidding me?

*Ben walks off*

Terri: I don’t know the tree could have broken her fall?

Rebecca: We got the call, who are we looking for?

*Terri walks off and Ben walks back.*

Jared: Lana Dawson, she’s 25, blond, about 177cm tall, 65kgs. *Rebecca nods*

Scott: Well she must have taken off.

Rebecca: That’s pretty obvious isn’t it?

Ben: Alright lets fan out and search the area.

Terri: *to Jared* Okay, you go I’ll handle Admin.

Rebecca: *walking off* It shouldn’t have happened in the first place.

Ben: I totally agree.

*The three of them are walking together*

Rebecca: *to Scott* Where’s you badge?

Scott: It’s in the ambulance. Why?

Rebecca: Well you should be wearing it.

Ben: Lets do our job hey?

[Room 4 where Nelson is shining a torch into Peters eyes.]

Nelson: How often have you been getting head aches?

Peter: Almost everyday now.

Nelson: Is the pain getting more severe?

Peter: Some days are worse than others. *Nelson finished examining Peter who then starts talking to his ‘wife’* It’s a few head aches Em, that’s all.

Nelson: Er, you don’t remember collapsing this morning? *Mitch walks in*

Peter: Yeah a bit of a dizzy spell. *looks to the side of the bed again and laughs* I was not drunk.

Nelson: This is Dr. Stevens Peter.

Mitch: Hi how are you? *shakes hands*

Peter: *indicates* This is my brother Bill.

*Mitch and Bill exchange greetings.*

Peter: And this is my wife Emma.

Mitch: Could you excuse us for a second please? *Peter nods and Mitch, Nelson and Bill leave the room. *

Mitch: What’s going on?

Nelson: His wife was killed in a ski accident about a year and a half ago.

Bill: Yeah he was totally shattered, about 6 months ago he started getting these head aches then a few weeks back he started talking to Emma. I thought he was going schizo or something.

Mitch: Has he seen a psychiatrist?

Peter: No he won’t go, he thinks that I’m the crazy one and that he’s sane.

*Mitch walks to the doorway*

Peter: Why don’t you sit down Em? Come on sit down sit down. Would you like a drink?

Mitch: Alright lets see where these head aches and dizzy spells are coming from, just look straight ahead for me. Is this the first time you collapsed?

Peter: Yes, Bill panicked. *Mitch is shining a torch in Peters eyes, it’s new one, and it is a big and black compared to the usual small white hand torch.* Ahh *brings hands up to his head* I’m okay I feel great.

Mitch: *puts down torch* Okay squeeze my hands for me, you been working hard?

Peter: Its more like a labor of love than hard work, I’ve just put together my first photo exhibition. He doesn’t want to know the details Em, you’re not into photography are you doc?

Mitch: I’m into x-rays if that counts. *Peter chuckles and looks at ‘Em’* I’ll order a CT scan and we’ll keep an eye on you for a day or two. Alright? *Peter nods and Mitch walks out of the room*

[Claire’s Room and Von is with her taking her blood pressure]

Claire: *coughs* Damn viral infection still I’ve been pretty lucky up until now.

Von: How long since you’ve been diagnosed?

Claire: 10 years, my god you’re good. *referring to Von taking her blood pressure*

Von: Pardon?

Claire: Most nurses haven’t got a clue how sore my joints get, you did that without me feeling a thing.

Von: And with a broken wrist, god I’m not bad am I!

Claire: I wish I could see you properly, I miss seeing faces.

Von: *laughs* You’re not missing much in this case. *Claire laughs too*

*door opens and Mitch walks in*

Mitch: Happy patient, that’s encouraging.

Von: This is Dr. Stevens Claire.

Mitch: I prefer to be called Mitch

Claire: That’s a good strong name, does it go with a good strong face?

Mitch: Well actually ah… *testing eye torch on hand*

Von: No, he’s alright.

Mitch: Flattery will get you everywhere Claire. *Walks from end of the bed towards Claire, shines torch in her eyes. * Okay how long has your eyesight been affected?

Claire: Nine months.

Mitch: Have you been on immunal suppressants?

Claire: Those and oral cortisone.

Mitch: Any other medication?

Claire: For Lupus or menopause? *Mitch walks back to the end of the bed where her file is located.*

Mitch: Are you on HRT?

Claire: For the last five months…is that a problem?

Mitch: Did your GP have your medical history?

Claire: Yes.

Von: Should have known better.

Claire: Why?

Mitch: Well research is indicating the HRT can escalate lupus Claire.

Claire: Then I’ll stop taking it.

Mitch: Unfortunately that won’t reverse the damage or the progress of the lupus. I’m going to have to do a plasma for recess. A plasma exchange, we’ll do a three hourly flush for three days we’ll also have you on an intravenous of cycle of phoslomine cyclo sporeen.

Claire: Spare me the names alone are enough to shorten my life.

Mitch: Well I won’t be long, I’ll book the machine. *picks up files and goes to leave the room but stands in the door way for a couple of seconds*

Claire: So how come you know so much about this bastard of a thing?

Von: Oh, it’s my job.

[Front desk at Ward 17 where a few of the staff are standing about doing tasks like filling out paper work. Luke, Terri, Paula, Bron and Matt]

Terri: So we don’t know how badly injured she is but everyone is looking for her. *beeping noise and Matt rushes and puts on a hands free head set*

Matt: Ward 17, hi yep, where on one.

Luke: Found her? *Matt shakes his head*

Matt: Okay thanks bye. Terri director of nursing wants to see you in her office in fifteen minutes.

Terri: I’ll bet she does, okay I’ll keep everyone informed.

Nelson: An explanation would be nice.

Terri: Have you got…?

Matt: Lana Dawson *hands Terri patients file*

*Mitch walks to desk and starts filling out paperwork*

Terri: *to Mitch* Have you seen Peter Talbert?

Mitch: Yeah I’m sending him for a CT scan.

Terri: Okay how mentally stable is he?

Mitch: Well I’m going to get psyche to have a look at him but apart from the wife hallucinations he seems lucid enough.*Terri nods* Look do you think it is a good idea having Von nursing a lupus patient?

Terri: I told Nelson to allocate Bron, I’ll handle it. *walks off*

[Camera on Bron who is on the phone standing next to Jared and Matt]

Bron: It wasn’t your fault.

Jared: My patient. *walks off*

[Terri’s office, she is talking on the phone.]

Terri: Right well if you do speak to him could you tell him to call me here? *starts reading Alana’s file* Yes its about his wife, yes, thank you. *hangs up the phone, Luke walks in to her office*

Luke: Terri, Lana Dawson was my patient.

Terri: Yeah I know. *frowning*

Luke: Well have you read her file? Two months post partum after giving birth to a stillborn baby, why wasn’t the possibility of post natal depression picked up?

Terri: I’ll look after it ok.

Luke: Well I want it on record that it was your nurse that stuffed up.

Terri: I’ll put it on record.

[Maternity ward Terri walking down the corridor talking to one of the nurses]

Patient: Somebody please! She’s got my baby! Could you put him back in the basinet?

Terri: Its alright I’ll handle the situation ok?

*Lana is holding a baby that is wrapped in a pink blanket, she is smiling and talking to the baby. Terri walks towards her*

Terri: Lana, I’ve been looking everywhere for you.

Lana: I found him, I found James.

Terri: Lana that can’t be James, James died, do you remember that?

Lana: But I knew I’d find him in heaven and I did.

Terri: Lana you’re at All Saints hospital, and this is the maternity ward.

Lana: I didn’t die?

Terri: No you didn’t die. You’re very lucky, but we need to have a look and you and see if you’re okay.

Lana: This isn’t James? *starts to cry*

Terri: No that isn’t James. I’m sorry, its alright, its okay.

Lana: *crying* Okay. *Terri gently takes baby off Lana*

Terri: Alright that’s the way, its alright. *Lana cries and brings her hands up to her face, they have blood on them. Terri hands the baby back to its mother.]

[Chloe’s room, There is some sort of councilor (Andrew) talking to her.]

Andrew: It must have been an awful thing to have witnessed Chloe, but the good thing is that Lana is okay.

Chloe: I saw her jump, its three stories high are you trying to tell me that she survived?

Bron: Yeah she did.

Chloe: Well where is she?

Bron: She’s downstairs in emergency and she’s doing fine I promise.

[Front desk at Ward 17]

Terri: Hey Nelson I thought I asked you to put Bron with Claire not Von.

Nelson: Yeah but after what Bron has been through I thought I’d give her a light shift.

Terri: But did she ask for that?

Nelson: No, no but you know, you were the one that said be aware of staff needs.

Terri: Okay it’s just that when I ask for something nelson I usually have a reason. *walks towards office*

Andrew: Terri?

Terri: uhuh.

Andrew: I just had a session with Chloe, she thinks we’re lying to her about Lana to make her feel better.

Terri: Right well Lana’s coming back here from Emegency do you think we should put her back in the same room as Chloe?

Andrew: Well actually it would be good for Chloe to see that Lana is still back in the land of the living. I’ll check on her later.

Terri: Alright *starts to walk into office and he starts to walk off then he turns around.*

Andrew: You might want to consider a staff debriefing just to clear the air. I’m available.

Terri: Yeah I’ll let you know. *starts to go back into her office*

Jared: There were no obvious signs.

Luke: There are no excuses Jared.

Jared: There was no red marker on her file.

Luke: You should have assessed the patient more carefully!

Bron: Oh Luke he’s not a mind reader.

Luke: I’m not asking him to be a mind reader just a nurse!

Terri: Oh come on Luke.

Luke: The patient was severely depressed.

Jared: She’s only just been admitted.

Nelson: Dr. if you are accusing a nurse of negligence you’d better be able to back it up.

Terri: Oh thank you.

Jared: She was in for stomach pain.

Terri: Look if you guys have got so much to say to each other you can do it in staff debriefing, matt could you organize it with Andrew please.

Matt: Uhuh.

Nelson: Talk about shutting the gate after the horses have bolted.

Paula: Do you have to make things worse?

[Chloe’s room, Lana is now back in bed.]

Jared: Okay is that comfortable for you Lana? *putting pillow behind her back*

Lana: That’s alright.

Jared: Thanks Bron.

Bron: *to Chloe* See just a few bumps and bruises. Don’t mind sharing the room?

Chloe: No I can’t believe it!

*Luke walks in*

Luke: Hello Lana, I’m Dr. Forlano, how are you feeling?

Lana: Crazy

Luke: Did the Dr. in emergency explain to you that you only have minor laceration and contusions from your fall?

Lana: Yeah they fixed me up.

Luke: But we still need to fix the infection that you were presented with. *opens file* Now it says here that you’ve been suffering severe abdominal pain, is that right?

Lana: There’s something wrong with me inside isn’t there?

Luke: You’ve got a nasty infection that’s why we are taking you into surgery to do a curet. Now do you understand what that is? *Lana nods* good. How long have you had this vaginal discharge?

Lana: Since my little boy died.

Luke: Well it appears that you may have retained some placenta after childbirth and that’s what has led to the infection. We can clear that up with a course of antibiotics once you’re out of surgery. *Kylie walks in* This is Dr. Priest.

Kylie: I’m and anesthetics intern so I’ll be preparing you for your operation. Can you tell me if you ate or drank anything when you left the ward?

Lana: I just wanted to be with my son.

[Claire’s room]

Claire: It’s just not knowing where it’s going to strike next that’s got me

Von: Treatment will slow the process Claire. *[puts a glass of water on the table and guide Claires hand to it.

Claire: Assuming it doesn’t attack somewhere else first.

Von: Assuming yes.

Claire: So its back to enjoying every day as it comes. *Terri opens door*

Terri: Von could I see you for a minute please? *Von walks towards her and they talk in the doorway*

Terri: I’m going to swap you with Paula.

Von: Why?

Terri: Cause I didn’t think you would want to be nursing a lupus patient.

Von: Oh *closes door* she’s got ears like a fox and no I won’t swap with Paula.

Terri: Are you sure?

Von: In all the years you’ve known me have you ever known me not to cope?

Terri: No.

Von: Well don’t start thinking it now.

Terri: See you at the debrief.

Von: I no no no, I wasn’t involved in that so I’m not affected.

Terri: I’ll see you there.

[Peters room]

Mitch: This is the temporal lobe and this is the parietal lobe.

Peter: Ahh *puts hands to his head.*

Mitch: *holding up a CT scan and pointing to different sections * And this dark mass here, that’s what’s pressing against the brain.

Peter: How long has it been there?

Mitch: Well that’s hard to say. Until they operate they won’t know what sort of tumor it is.

Peter: It doesn’t mean that Em, does it?

Mitch: Mean what Peter?

Nelson: That its…

Mitch: *interrupts* Mean what Peter?

Peter: That I’m going to die.

Mitch: Well hopefully it’s benign, but we won’t know until we send a section to pathology and that what’s been causing those hallucinations.

Peter: What hallucinations?

Mitch: Peter your wife’s not here.

Peter: This is a hospital or some twisted prank that Bills playing?

Mitch: Peter.

Peter: Now look what you’ve done, its alright Em, come here. Its alright its just a sick joke.

*Mitch walks out of the room and Nelson follows*

Nelson: What’s wrong with going along with it?

Mitch: You know the drill its worse in the long run to go along with the dillusion.

Nelson: I just don’t see any harm in keeping him happy until surgery that’s all.

Mitch: Fine as long as you don’t lie to him.

Nelson: Put yourself in his shoes, one minute he’s talking to the woman he loves and the next minute he wakes up and she’s gone cut out of his head you know? *points to his head*

Terri: Bron debrief is starting.

Bron: Yep.

*Terri walks towards Mitch*

Mitch: Don’t look at me.

Terri: Nelson tea room thanks, Paula, yes I’ll be right there.

Matt: Can I go?

Terri: No you can’t because someone has to answer the phones, but I can organize a one on one if you like.

Matt: No I just wanted to be there and hear all the guts spilling out you know.

Terri: Hey Luke.

Luke: Haven’t got time.

Terri: Hold on.

Luke: Drs aren’t expected to attend debriefs.

Terri: Can you just forget about policy for a minute because you had a issue with my staff and you need to sort it out.

Luke: Christ what is this place a bloody sheltered workshop?

[Tea room, Terri, Jared, Andrew, Bron, Paula, Nelson and Von.]

Andrew: Okay firstly I’d just like to say thank everyone for showing up. We’ll keep this informal, so anyone like to start? *Luke walks in* Would anyone like to tell me what happened this morning? Von would you like to get the ball…

Von: Well I wasn’t really personally affected.

Terri: Look, come on you all had a lot to say to each other this morning.

Andrew: The first thing that comes to your head. Anyone?

Bron: Shit happens? Oh well especially in this job, what’s new?

Paula: I’m glad she’s still alive I’d feel a lot worse if she’d been killed or paralyzed.

Andrew: This isn’t just about Lana it’s about what has been stirred up by the incident. I’m sensing some blame, and possible feelings of guilt.

Nelson: There wouldn’t have even been an incident if things were managed better here.

[Staff walking through ward 17 doors]

Bron: *to Nelson* Pretty unnecessary swipe at Terri there?

Nelson: Look the point of a debrief is to let everyone say how they feel and that’s what I was doing.

Bron: Fat load of good it did.

Von: So wasn’t that a bloody waste of time hey? *Bron nods*

Matt: So Bron, you been debriefed yet?

Bron: Not since last night as I remember. *Matt chuckles*

Terri: Bron, Bron *points to Chloe walking out of her room, Bron walks towards her*

Chloe: I’m worried about Lana, she’s just staring into space. *Bron walks with her into the room, Matt is answering a phone call.*

Terri: Nelson tell me is there something between you and I that we need to work out?

Matt: Terri Jane Marsden is on her way to see you. *Jane walks through the swing doors* Correction is here to see you.

Jane: Didn’t you get my message. *Terri walks her towards her office*

Terri: Sorry, come on in.

Matt: Not happy Joan!

[In Chloes room, Bron is talking to Lana who is staring into the distance. Chloe is standing near the doorway.]

Bron: What are you thinking about, what’s happening?

Chloe: See what I mean.

Bron: Are you in pain?

Lana: I deserve it.

Bron: Where’s the pain? *starts to walk towards the door*

Chloe: Where are you going?

Bron: Just to get the doctor I won’t be a minute.

Chloe: What if she gets up what if she…

Bron: Chloe I’m just out here, one minute I promise.

[Terri’s office]

Terri: They should have picked this up in emergency Joan they had her file.

Joan: It should have been noted on admission here Terri that’s why we have back up systems all the way down the line.

Terri: She disappeared off the ward before a doctor had a chance to look at her.

Joan: There was time for the nurse on duty to read her notes, assess her behavior.

Terri: Well its just as well there’s a no blame policy in force isn’t there?

Joan: That just doesn’t help the hospital standing in the community.

Terri: Joan we should be asking ourselves how we can prevent this from happening again not looking for a scapegoat.

Joan: I take it you are aware that Jared Levine’s name has been cropping up on a few incident reports lately. Sloppy work, enforced leave.

Terri: Joan don’t do this you know who’s side I’m on.

Joan: Terri this is the nurse who failed to call clear at an arrest he put your life at risk, why are you defending him?

Terri: Why are you after him?

Joan: My point is that this hospital needs better nursing staff than the Jared Levines. If this situation blows up and I need to be seen to take action I won’t hesitate, you understand?

[Claires room, Von opens the door and walks in.]

Claire: Von is that you?

Von: Yes.

Claire: I thought Sister Sullivan was moving you.

Von: Big ears! No I’m with you until we get you a high dependency bed.

Claire: Why did she want to move you?

Von: I’ve got lupus.

Clair: How long have you known?

Von: Three years.

Claire: But you’re still working so you must be alright.

Von: Aches and pains, tiredness.

Claire: And you didn’t go on HRT?

Von: No Mitch Stevens advised me against that.

Claire: So your tests have been ok?

Von: I went to see my doctor a couple of weeks ago.

Claire: And?

Von: I haven’t been back for the results.

Claire: Not game enough?

Von: Oh there’s a little bit of that.

[Ambulance 978 driving down road in the bush sirens on.]

Ben: (to Scott) You must have done something to get up Rebecca’s nose.

Scott: I told you I haven’t done anything.

Ben: Why’s she on your case then?

Scott: Look do you reckon this is a hoax call or what?

Ben: They said 2 k’s in…keep driving.

Scott: Oh, there it is.

*Ambulance pulls over, Ben and Scott get out all there gear.*

Ben: Hello?

*Lady sitting at the base of a tree, she has an arrow in her arm.*

Lady: Over here.

Ben: My name’s Ben, and this is my partner Scott.

Lady: Trish.

Ben: *inspects wound* There’s not too much bleeding, looks like you missed the artery. It’s gone straight through.

Trish: Have I got any muscle damage?

Ben: It’s hard to say. Pulse 80, we need to clean the wound then bind the arrow firmly into place.

Scott: How on earth did you manage to do that to yourself?

Trish: I’m not that bad a shot. My husband did it.

Scott: Your husband shot you?

Trish: His aim has always been off.

Scott: Where is he?

Trish: In the car, he called the ambulance from the car phone so he should still be there. *Ben gets up and walks over to the car*

Ben: What’s his name?

Trish: Ivan.

Scott: *to Trish* Ok just hold still.

Ben: *walking towards car* Ivan? My name is Ben I’m with the ambulance service. Why don’t you come out here and we can talk about it? *Ivan groans and a hand appears near the open car door and pushes himself to a standing position. He has an arrow imbedded in his upper chest. Ben runs towards him* Scott radio for back up!

[Lana’s room, Jared and Kylie are on either side of her bed.]

Kylie: *Luke walks in* Abdo’s distended and rigid, she’s diaphoretic refer to shoulder tip pain.

Luke: Are her stats dropping?

Kylie: uhuh, paddock regions rigid, she must have slow bleed.

Luke: Lacerated liver, she been prepped for theatre? *Lana groans in pain and sits forward*

Kylie: Yeah I’ve changed her fluids to geloflusine sent blood off for cross matching.

Luke: Good. We’ll do a CT scan then straight to theatre. Jared can you ring the blood bank and get 6 units of Paxil set up, go.

Bron: *to Chloe* It’s ok she’ll be fine.

[Claires room, Mitch, Terri and Von are there. Terri is assisting Mitch with the procedure.]

Mitch: Ok this is just local anesthetic it might sting a bit.

Von: Sodium bicarb will help that.

Claire: I hardly felt a thing, so how does this thing work?

Mitch: Well we draw the blood from the sub-cleavian vein. And we pass it through the machine which separates the plasma rinses it and returns it to the body without the bad protein. Ok, I’m inserting the wire now. Okay.

Terri: Perfect.

Claire: Going to be a long three hours hooked up to this thing.

Von: Not at all, I’m going to entertain you!

Claire: If you’re going to tell me your life story I’ll warn you that I’m only interested in the sorted bits.

Von: You lucky girl, we’ll be here all night.

[Back to ambulance 978, Ben is dressing Ivan’s wound.]

Scott: The site of pressure is 140.

Ivan: Can’t you just cut it off?

Ben: We don’t have the equipment and ambulance rescue aren’t here so we’ll have to get you to hospital as quick as we can keeping you as still as possible. *siren in distance, Ben now speaks to Scott* Do you want to get some pillows and a blanket?

Scott: Yep.

Trish: Will he survive?

Ben: Well you’re lucky, you missed the artery.

Trish: If I wanted to have hit it I would have.

Ivan: You should have aimed for the heart.

Trish: If you had one!

*Another ambulance pulls over and Rebecca gets out.*

Ivan: Bill Cravis won’t want you now! Your arm is stuffed.

Ben: Hey! Keep still, you want this to puncture your artery?

Ivan: She made me do it, she pushed I…

Ben: Just calm down…

Rebecca: *walks up to Ben* How’d this happen?

Ben: Robin Hood and Maid Marion had a bit of a falling out! Could you do this dressing for me?

Rebecca: yeah. So who shot first?

Ben: Both at once. *Scott walks up holding pillows and blankets.*

Ivan: *Rebecca starts wrapping a bandage around the Ivan’s wound.* She’s cheating on me.

Trish: I’m not cheating on you! How many times do I have to say it?

Ivan: I’ll kill you before I’ll let \you shoot with Bill bloody Cravis!

Rebecca: Hey, hey you two can argue all you like after we get you to hospital! We’re going to need three of us to get him on that stretcher. You going to just stand there Scott?

[In Theatre, there is opera music playing.]

Dr Craybrook: *hums to opera music whilst stitching up Lana* In the final act with our lover dead Tosca climbs the battelance, crying out that she will seize scarmea before God, leaps to her death. The beauty of opera as opposed to the banality of life. Pity this girl didn’t fall on her head, might have knocked some sense into her.

Anesthetist: Lana, the sensitivity Dr. Craybrook lacks as a person in no way reflects his skill as a surgeon, you’re perfectly safe.

Dr. Craybrook: Suicides, you spend all this time doing surgery and she’ll most likely do it again. *takes off gloves* Waste of all our time.

Anesthetist: Relax Lana, we’re all glad you’re with us.  Pulse normal that’s the way.

Dr. Craybrook: Hope you’re not teaching the intern all this toddle Gail. Position the patient for a DNC.

[Ambulances are driving through the bush towards All Saints, sirens are on.]

Ivan: The only reason Bill Cravis wants to team up with Trish is because he’s after her body. She’s so desperate to win competition she won’t see it.

Ben: Just try and relax okay. Every time you mention this Cravis bloke your blood pressure goes up.

Ivan: Serves her right if I damaged her arm.

*Ambulance goes over a big bump in the road, Ivan yells in pain*

Ben: Hey!

Scott: Sorry, just a bit of log in the grass!

Ivan: *looks down at wound, there’s blood streaming out!* Hey what’s that?

Ben: Artery has ruptured!

Ivan: Stop it!

Ben: *puts hand down on wound* Go!!

[Back in theatre, Dr. Craybrook is still operating on Lana.]

Dr. Craybrook: How can anyone let an infection go this far?

Kylie: If she was severely depressed she might not have noticed or cared.

Dr. Craybrook: That was a rhetorical question, not a consult Dr. Priest! Its a boggy mess in here, I can’t feel the uterine wall. It’s filling with blood.

Anesthetist: Put up another Paxils…run it as fast as you can!

Dr. Craybrook: We need to reopen the abdomen.

Anesthetist: It’s okay Lana. Everything will be fine, you’re doing well!

[Ward 17 front desk.]

Matt: *to man who has just walked in* Can I help you?

Hue: I’m Hue Dawson, you left messages for me. Has something happened to my wife Lana?

Matt: Right I’ll go get Sister Sullivan for you mate. *walks to Terri’s office* Terri? Hue Dawson.

Hue: What’s happened to Lana?

Terri: Oh Mr Dawson, I’m Terri Sullivan, why don’t you come into my office with me?

Hue: I’m not going anywhere till you tell me what’s going on.

Terri: Well your wife is in surgery at the moment, she had an infection and she also has a minor laceration on her liver.

Hue: How’d this happen?

Terri: Well she had an accident.

Hue: What accident?

Terri: Why don’t you come into my office?

Hue: What bloody accident?

Terri: Mr Dawson, your wife is severely post natally depressed. And this morning she jumped from the balcony and luckily she only sustained minor injuries.

Hue: How the hell could she jump from the balcony? Why weren’t you looking after her?

Terri: As I said she’s very depressed.

Hue: That’s your job is to snap her out of it! That’s what you’re here for isn’t it?

Jared: Mr Dawson, my name is Jared and I was actually the one who was nursing your wife.

Hue: Then it’s your bloody fault as well, she came in with a stomach ache for christs sake!

Terri: Mr Dawson I’m sure she’s going to be fine.

Hue: Of course she’s not you stupid bitch!

Jared: Mr Dawson, it’s perfectly understandable that your upset it’s a natural reaction but its probably best if we could discuss these things calmly.

Hue: You’re right, getting upset not going to achieve anything but maybe suing the whole damn lot of you might. I’m going down stairs to call my lawyer, you better have some answers by the time I get back!

Jared: You alright?

Terri: Yeah. *Von walks out of Claires room*

Von: Page Mitch, Claire is in respiratory distress!

[Back in theatre, Dr. Craybrook is continuing the surgery.]

Dr. Craybrook: There’s too much slut in here. I can’t find the puncture.

Anesthetist: Order up three more units.

Dr. Craybrook: Forget it! I’m removing the uterus.

Anesthetist: The BP’s stable.

Dr. Craybrook: She’s lost too much blood from her liver, we don’t have time to look for the bleeder!

Kylie: She jumped because she lost her baby, we can’t remove the uterus!

Dr. Craybrook: Scalpel?

Kylie: No, you can’t!

[Claire’s room, Mitch, Nelson and Von are with her.]

Mitch: Ok it’s clear you have an umothorax (~Sorry that’s definitely not right! If anyone knows what Mitch is saying there please email me!) which is why you are having pain breathing. It just means that you have air trapped in the intra plural space between the ribs and the lung. Its not because of your SLE it was caused because of the insertion of the central line. So I’m going to put a needle in and let the air out.

Von: Its not going to take long it’ll be over in a minute.

Mitch: All we have to do is measure the third intra costrual space. Insert the needle and let the air out.

Nelson: Not too far over the right? I did a few of these myself in the Territory.

Mitch: *Nelson hands Mitch something* Thank you. Okay Von could you get the mobile chest x-ray please.

Von: Mmm.

[Back in theatre, surgery has finished and they are about to leave.]

Dr. Craybrook: What the hell were you doing questioning my call in the middle of the operation Dr. Priest! We were under the risk of DIC.

Kylie: But you did it.

Dr. Craybrook: We saved the uterus yes, but that won’t save your job if you ever pull a stunt like that again! Understood? *walks out, the anesthetist walks past Kylie*

Anesthetist: Keep it up!

[Mitch and Nelson walking out of Claires room.]

Mitch: Don’t question my judgement!

Nelson: When was I…?

Mitch: That was the second time today that you stepped over the line don’t do it again!

Nelson: *to Paula* Oh I know I’m a lone voice here but I’m sorry he’s a wanker!

Paula: How many city hospital wards have you actually worked at Nelson?

Nelson: Enough.

Paula: Well not enough to know a good one when it bites you on the bum.

[In Lana’s room, Luke, Hue Dawson are there standing on each side of the bed.]

Luke: The curette has cleared your uterus of the retained tissue, so once the infection clears up you will be back to normal.

Hue: Will she still be able to have kids?

Luke: Yeah of course. I’ll be back to see you later.

Jared: Lana? Did you understand everything Dr. Forlano told you? Okay, a grief counselor will be in to see you a little later.

Hue: A grief counselor?

Jared: Well Lana still needs help getting over the death of her baby.

Hue: She’s just sick that’s all.

Jared: It might help if you go along to the sessions as well Mr Dawson.

Hue: This some ploy to make me stop from suing?

Jared: No. Lana is still suffering post natal depression.

Hue: The past is the past! We don’t need to drag it up again. Once you get pregnant this will all blow over.

Lana: But he’ll die too. They all will, James died because I was rotten inside, so will the next baby. Nothing can live inside me. *Hue walks out*

Jared: No that isn’t what happened Lana, no one is to blame, especially not you.

Lana: *Crying* I can’t live with the pain.

Jared: I know, I know its okay. When you talk about it, it won’t seem so bad.

Chloe: *walks towards Lana’s bed* My mother lost a baby she still grieves for her, but if mum had given up she’d have never had me.

[Front desk area, Mitch walks through holding test results.]

Terri: So what’s the verdict?

Mitch: The tumors malignant.

*Jared and Hue walk past*

Jared: You can’t just walk away from this!

Hue: It’s none of your business!

Jared: Look, your wife didn’t try to kill herself because we stuffed up! She hasn’t been allowed to grieve.

Hue: Your job isn’t to interfere with peoples private lives. This hospital is a bloody disgrace. *walks out of the ward*

[Terri, Nelson and Mitch are now in Peters room. Peter now has a bandage around his head.]

Peter: How long have I got?

Mitch: Well there’s no way of telling, chemotherapy will slow the process. I’m sorry it couldn’t be better news.

Peter: Where’s Emma? She’ll go to pieces.

Mitch: Peter do you remember what happened to Emma 18 months ago? She was in a skiing accident.

Peter: You think I’d forget something like that?

Mitch: Your brain has been in a lot of trauma. In a few days you’ll remember.

Peter: Remember what?

Mitch: Emma died in the accident.

Peter: She was here before the operation, could someone go and get her please? I don’t want her waiting on her own.

Terri: Just lie back for me.

Peter: Alright lets start again, my wife was here this morning. And I want you to call her back.

Mitch: No Peter she wasn’t here. One of the side effects of the type of tumor that you had was the delusion that your wife was still alive.

Peter: No. You saw her. You were talking to her, telling her…

Nelson: I’m sorry Peter, I didn’t see her I just wanted to make you feel better.

[Von walks into Claires room.]

Claire: If this damn machine weren’t bad enough my chest is hurting.

Von: Well you’re being very brave.

Claire: I try Von. I try to be. I don’t want to give in to it. But I can’t stand it, I hate this disease I hate it! The pain I go through, the agony its horrible.

Von: *holding Claires hand* Let it all out.

Claire: What kind of life is this Von? Whats the point, I’m never going to get any better. I might as well die and get over with it. I just can’t deal with it any longer I can’t.

[Front desk, Bron is talking to Matt.]

Matt: So that’s it, dropped me out my flat just like that out on my ass.

Bron: Well that’s awful, you should take them to the rent thingy. He can’t just chuck you out he has to give you six weeks notice by law.

Matt: Yeah well there was a letter thingy I must have chucked it out, it was a long time ago.

Bron: You idiot!

Matt: I know, I know it was my own fault I take full responsibility.

Bron: So what are you going to do?

Matt: I dunno, find a park bench, newspapers, just hope it doesn’t rain. *Bron laughs*

Bron: Well we can’t have that now can we, you can come crash at our place!

Matt: Really? I don’t want to impose…

Bron: No don’t be stupid, its alright come with us!

Matt: You’re a champ!

[Ambulance staff room, Scott is sitting on a chair reading a magazine, Ben is standing in the doorway.]

Ben: You been called in yet?

Scott: No I’m the next cab off the rank though.

Rebecca: *walks in and stands in the doorway* Trish and Ivan have changed their story, they’re now saying it was an accident!

Scott: So what are we supposed to tell the police now?

Rebecca: The truth.

Scott: Well it’s a fatal attraction, the more they fight the more they have got the hots for each other. Let them loose I say.

Rebecca: Yeah and next time they might kill each other. Do you want to be responsible for that? *Ben is looking on with interest* What?

Ben: Well you two have been throwing darts at each other all day what’s going on?

Rebecca: Don’t try that on with me Ben okay?

Ben: Try what?

Rebecca: I know Scott has been shooting his mouth out about what happened between us, I’m sure I’m just another notch on his belt.

Ben: No he didn’t mention a thing, but thanks for filling me in!

[Von is at the doctors.]

Dr.: You took your time coming back to me.

Von: I’ve been busy.

Dr.: Mmm…your analysis, no present neurea, hematurea, cellular or granular casts. Your ESR and ANA are both in normal ranges, you would have saved yourself a lot of worry if you had come back earlier.

Von: I’m sorry Dr. but you are going to have to spell it out for me.

Dr.: You’re in remission Von, well haven’t you got anything to say? *Von gets up and walks out.*

[Ward 17, Jared, Bron and Paula]

Jared: You up for a drink?

Paula: Nah I have to go home and cook help max with his homework and blah blah blah.

Bron: Ah well maybe next time? Nelson you coming?

Nelson: Nah.

Matt: Well I’ll see you guys in the car park!

Terri, Paula, Von, Jared, Bron: Bye!

*Von walks up to Terri*

Terri: Hey where’d you get to?

Von: Sorry about that. Errend to run to. Well see you tomorrow, okay?

Terri: Okay.

Nelson: Bad day?

Terri: Yeah.

Nelson: You can tell me you know, I expect you to fight back.

[Claires room.]

Claire: Von is that you?

Von: Thought you might be a bit puckish.

Claire: I am a bit actually.

Von: good.

Claire: I feel so embarrassed, blubbering all over the place before. *Von places a bottle of juice and a plate of food on the little table*

Von: No, I don’t want an apology.

Claire: Pointless anyway, crying and complaining doesn’t solve anything.

Von: Claire, I was forced to go to a debrief today, so you got a bunch of petty problems for staff who have got nothing better to do with their time but to justify some hospital psychologists position. That solved nothing. But you, you had to get all of that out of your system.

Claire: I do feel better.

Von: Good.

Claire: Not what about you Von, do you ever let it all out?

Von: I have my moments.

[Outside All saints. Scott is sitting on some railings, Rebecca sees him and is about to walk towards him when, Ben Bron and Jared come out.]

Jared: Jeez mate you look happy.

Scott: Ecstatic.

Bron: Now do you mind if Matt stays on the couch for a couple of days?

Scott: Not at all.

Bron: Jared?

Jared: Well I guess I’m out voted.

Bron: Hey Matt, drinks at Cougars!

Matt: I’ll meet you guys back at your place, I gotta go pick up my drum kit!

Scott: Oh cool!

*Matt runs through the parking lot and knocks Von, Von keeps walking.*

Dr: Hi Von, its good news. *Von stops and turns around*

Von: Err…aww…*gives the Dr a big kiss!*
