Camera pans to Bron she is lying in her bed, next it shows Ben walking towards their room with a towel wrapped around his waist. Camera shows Bron pull cover over her head. Ben enters room and glances at uneaten breakfast (toast and fruit with juice) *picks up juice*]

Ben: Hey sleepyhead, what about your breakfast?

Bron: *muffled under doona* Not hungry.

Ben: Have some juice? *gently shakes Bron* Its pineapple.

Bron: You drink it

Ben: Right that’s it, I’m calling in sick for you, you need time off. *reaches for the phone*

Bron: No I don’t.

Ben:  Bron you don’t eat, you don’t sleep, it can’t go on like this.

*Bron uncovers her self and is sitting up.*

Bron: I’m fine Ben.

Ben: You can’t even get out of bed.

Bron quickly jumps out of bed*

Bron: Okay look I’m up. *takes phone off Ben*

Ben: *sigh* You need to talk about this.

Bron: I need you to get off my back.

::opening CREDITS::

[Camera shot of Bron cleaning up head wound of her patient which is a student called Josh from the train crash, his Dad Frank is in the background holding some flannel pajamas]

Josh: [about the pajamas] Dad you’re not serious!?

Frank: Why what’s wrong with them? *Bron smiles*

Josh: I’m not going home in those. *talks to Bron* Dads wishes I’d forget that I’m not a nerd.

*Mitch walks into the room*

Mitch: Morning Josh.

Frank: Have you signed those discharge forms yet?

Mitch: Hold your horses the speech pathologist needs one more visit okay?

*Josh nods*

Frank: But after that…?

Mitch: Yeah all going well *flips through file* Now I believe you’ve got your appetite back?

Bron: Yes, the kitchen’s having a hard time keeping up

Mitch: That’s good; can you taste or smell your food?

Josh: *shakes head* doesn’t stop me from being hungry though.

Mitch: And how’s your memory?

Josh: Um…every now and then I get a flash.

Bron: What of?

Josh: Sounds, the wheels screeching and I remember being thrown but…um that’s all.

Frank: Will he eventually remember everything?

Mitch: Well that’s impossible to predict but we’ll keep our fingers crossed.

Josh: My brains got a mind of its own hey?

*Bron smiles*

[Camera on front desk of Ward 17]

{Characters: Matt, Nelson, Jared, Luke and Terri}

Nelson: 94%, right that’s the mortality rate for necreatitis and pancreatitis and we’ve got one on our ward.

Matt: What, one of the 94?

Nelson: One of the 6% who survive. Terri can I take the necreatitis and pancreatitis?

Terri: You’ve got rooms 9 and 15 but ahh..*Luke drops some files, Matt who is talking to Jared rolls his eyes grins and picks them up.*  Von’s looking after Charlie Ellis so you can look after the meds and dressings.

Nelson: Good

Von: Yes, thank you…I knew you’d be the sort of nurse who loves treating open wounds. *To Nelson who is walking out towards a patients room.*

Matt: Well he is a medical freak…and he’s just a freak.

Von: *chuckles* Yeah… *walks off too*

*Bron is looking at board to see what patients she has*

Jared: Bron, got a really nice card from Lyles dad thanking us for our support.

Bron: I’ll read it later…um Josh is getting ready for discharge what else have I got?

Terri: Same as yesterday.

Bron: Well that’s only four patients, three when he goes.

Terri: Well enjoy it while it lasts.

*Jared sees Kylie walking out of a patients room*

Jared: Hey Kylie? *Kylie is walking towards the doors*

Kylie: Oh I’m due in theatre.

Jared: Yeah well you didn’t call last night.

Kylie: Yeah last minute MVA didn’t get in till midnight. ??

Jared: Well I was still up.

Kylie: I’m sorry, look I really need to go. *walking out of doors now*

Jared: Have I suddenly developed a repellant body odor?

  Bron: No *starts walking away*

Matt: You’ve always had that body odor.

*patient in wheel chair and lady walking beside her walk into Ward 17*

Lady: Hello, this is Melissa Dawson she’s having surgery this afternoon. She’s in pain.

Melissa: Its just the gall bladder again, I’m look forward to losing it.

Terri: Hi Melissa I’m Terri. *glances at lady*

  Lady: I’m Elizabeth Dawson.

  Terri: How’s your husband?

Elizabeth: Paulie Pop still doesn’t like hospitals *holding Melissa’s hand* fortunately she has me.

Terri: Alright I’ll get Dr. Burgess to give you something for the pain.

Jared: Hi I’m Jared and I’m going to be looking after you.

[Camera pans to Paula who is walking in]

Paula: Luke, have you done those medication charts?

Luke: Ah….*clears throat and looks around* yep.

Matt: Dr Stevens that was your speech pathologist, she will be meeting you at 10.

  Mitch: Great, thanks.

[Camera now shows Luke and Paula, Luke is on the computer and Paula is standing next to him looking at the medication charts.]

Paula: Luke one of them is on iv drugs and needs to be written on a iv meds chart.

  Luke: *rubs head* right…

  Paula: I’ll come back.

Luke: Matt where are the iv meds charts?

Matt: In there *gestures, then sees that Luke isn’t planning on getting them for himself* well you just sit right there and I’ll get them for you!

Mitch: Paperwork not one of your forte Forlano?

Luke: No, it was certainly not why I studied for 10 years.

Matt: Well you could always get a job answering the phone couldn’t ya?

Luke: *not looking very happy at that suggestion* Look I’ll ah…get out of your hair.

Matt: No, no, no I’m not saying I’d ever be willing to scalpel again, what did I say that was so offensive that’s what I wanna know? *Mitch walks out*

[Camera shows Von, Nelson and patient Charlie Ellis]

*Von pours glass of water and hands to patient*

Von: Water straight up no ice.

Nelson: I think your drinking days are over.

Charlie: Oh don’t start that, drinking isn’t responsible for everything.

Nelson: Well it caused your illness.

Charlie: Doctors put it down to drinking cause they can’t be bothered to find the real answer.

Nelson: Well I don’t think so.

Charlie: Can you only get this disease from drinking?

  Nelson: Nah there’s gallstones and…

  Charlie: Well there you go…

  Von: Yes, thank you Nelson.

Nelson: Mate are you on any abstinence programs?

  Charlie: Yeah, all of them.

  Von: That’s enough.

Nelson: Even one more drink could stimulate your digestive enzymes your other organs are already eaten away.

Charlie: You know a lot about this don’t you?

Nelson: You have to give up alcohol.

Charlie: Why don’t you go bore someone else with that?

Nelson: Yeah I will as soon as I’ve finished with you. *hands Charlie medication*

[Camera now shows doors of Ward 17, Terri’s office door is open and she’s just about to walk out, Dominic walks in.]

Terri: I was about to send out a search party.

  Dominic: Sorry?

Terri: Well you’re usually in here from dawn till dusk.

Dominic: Frank rang me to pick up some more clothes for Josh. How’s he doing?

Terri: Well fine, once Mitch has given him the all clear he should be allowed to go home.

  Dominic: *nods*

Terri: I thought you’d be happy about that?

Dominic: I am, are you free for lunch?

  Terri: *nods*

  Dominic: One?

  Terri: Yeah it’s a date.

  *Mitch turns around*

[Camera now shows Von and Nelson leaving the room]

Nelson: *wheeling trolley* I’m just trying to help the guy, maybe you should treat him for acute sarcasm.

Von: Maybe he’s not as overjoyed about his condition as you are.

Nelson: *walking out of view with trolley* He does not even accept that he has a condition.

Von: Yes that’s right, he’s in denial, he’s in pain and he’s grieving.

Nelson: *in med room* Has he lost someone?

Von: Alcohol. We should help him come to terms with it gently not with a plank of wood.

Nelson: We are not doing him any favors by pretending that he doesn’t have a problem.

Von: And I suppose you are doing him favors by making him feel useless?

Nelson: And what’s useless is wasting resources on someone who’s going to walk out of here and undo all that we’ve done.

*Terri is now standing next to Von holding a folder.*

Terri:  You two having a go at each other isn’t going to help anybody. *Nelson walks off, Terri now addresses Von* How’s your wrist?

Von: Hasn’t got it in him.

  Terri: He’s a good nurse.

Von: Yes by the text books perhaps. Doesn’t have a bedside manner.

Terri: Oh no well he’ll learn that by wonderful people setting a fine example.

Von: Am I a teacher now? Good I’ll bring back the cane.

*Matt hands Terri a folder*

Terri: Thank you.

[Camera shows Elizabeth and Melissa Dawson holding hands, Jared is giving Melissa a injection.]

Jared: All right that should help relieve the pain.

  Elizabeth: Thank you Jared.

Jared: Now you’re not allowed anything to eat or drink till after the surgery.

Elizabeth: I’ll keep an eye on her.

  Melissa: She’s a school teacher.

Jared: Have you had colistitus before?

Melissa: Yeah I’m not too keen on surgery but I don’t want to go through this again, this is my third attack.

Elizabeth: And by far the worst. But you would eat that pizza last night!

Melissa: Guilty as charged, I’m a sucker for the meat lovers special, couldn’t resist one piece.

Jared: High fat foods aggravate the condition.

  Melissa: Mm…I had noticed that.

Jared: But you couldn’t resist right?

  Melissa: No.

*Dr. Luke Forlano walks into the room*

  Melissa: Hello.

Luke: Hi I’m Luke Forlano I’m here to do your surgical workup.

Melissa: mm…this isn’t so bad two good looking nurses.

*Luke looks up and Jared also glances at Luke*

Luke: I’m a doctor. Now when did you see Dr. Burgess?

Melissa: This morning in his rounds.

Luke: And he scheduled you for a collesectomy today?

Melissa: Yeah, he said I was lucky he had time today.

*Luke frowns and flips through the charts*

[Camera on Bron doing Josh’s blood pressure.]

Josh: So how does it look?

  Bron: Picture perfect.

  Josh: How’s that guy?

[Camera now shows Dominic and Joshes father in the background]

  Bron: Who’s that?

Josh: You know the one that you were on the train with?

  Bron: Oh you remember him.

Josh: Yeah we were umm…stirring him up about his signing. *pauses*

  *Dominic and dad step closer*

Dominic: You’re remembering more that’s great.

  Dad: Keep going.

  *Josh has frozen*

Bron: Josh? *walks up to the side of the bed* Josh? Can you hear me? *Shines her torch into his eyes.*

  Dominic: What’s wrong?

*Bron continues shining the torch, suddenly Josh shakes his head*

  Josh: Hey?

  Bron: What happened just then?

Josh: Umm…nothing. [camera pans down on his fingers which he fiddling with.]

  Dominic: Is everything all right?

Bron: What’s going on with your fingers mate?

Josh: Umm just a bit numb.

Bron: Are you a bit dizzy? *puts her hand on his forehead*

Josh: Mm…kind of.

Bron: Yeah, has this happened before?

  Josh: Um I dunno.

  Dad: Is there a problem?

Bron: I’m just going to get Mitch to have a look at you just to make sure. Okay?

[Camera now shows Terri sitting down at her desk in her office. The door is open and Mitch walks in.]

  Mitch: You’ve got a date?

Terri: *looks up* what? *Mitch walks in* Oh Dom? *laughs* Well it’s not a date we’re having lunch.

Mitch: Well you said it’s a date.

Terri: That’s an expression you know like green eyed monster?

  Mitch: *chuckles* I’m not jealous.

  Terri: Sounds like you are.

Mitch: Well Dom thinks you’re single.

  Terri: I am single.

Mitch: Well all I’m saying is that it might be more than a lunch to Dom, you can’t just tell me he’s being hanging round here just because of some snotty nosed student.

  Terri: You are jealous.

  Mitch: No I’m just concerned.

  Terri: For who?

  Mitch: For Dom!

Terri: *laughs* So do you expect me to just sit around and not talk to anther man until you’re free?

Mitch: No I can’t ask you to do that. Unless you want to do that.

*Bron pops her head in the door*

Bron: Mitch, can you take a look at Josh?

  Mitch: What’s up?

  Bron: I think he’s just had a Petite-mal seizure.

*Mitch and Terri follow Bron*

[Now in Joshs room, Mitch is examining him with Bron standing at the end of the bed]

Mitch: Okay Josh can you just move your fingers for me, okay Josh now I’ll just shine my torch in your eye alright? What were you doing before your fingers went numb?

Josh: I was talking about the crash with Bron.

Bron: Yeah then he drifted off.

Dominic: He was just straining to remember.

Mitch: Okay Bron could you grab a commerder please?

  Father: What’s that for?

Mitch: Just to check his blood sugar levels.

Dominic: What has that got to do with anything?

Mitch: *looking at chart* Josh are you feeling sleepy at all?

*Josh has now frozen again, Mitch reaches down towards him*

Josh can you hear me? *Josh starts having a seizure, Terri removes the pillows*

  Dad: Oh god!

  Mitch: Bron 10mL diazapan. ??

  Dad: What’s happening to him?

  Mitch: Terri…

Terri: Okay come this way outside.

  Dad: Josh!

  Terri: He’ll be fine.

[Front reception desk at ward 17]

  Frank: What’s taking so long?

Paula: It’s okay they’re just checking him over.

*Mitch walks out of the room*

Frank: What the hell was that?

Mitch: Look he had a seizure.

*Bron and an orderly are now moving the bed out of the room*

  Frank: Josh? Josh its dad?

  Bron: He’s asleep Frank.

Terri: It’s normal after a seizure.

Mitch: We’re going to take him down for a CT scan.

  Frank: Why?

Mitch: Well it could have been caused by another breeding of his brain.

*Luke walks into the Ward*

Frank: Is it was because you drilling holes in his head on the bloody train track!

Mitch: Epilepsy is a common complication after a serious head injury.

  Frank: Epilepsy?

Terri: Why don’t we let Paula take you into the sunroom and get you a cup of tea because Josh could be awhile.

Paula: Okay come on Frank, come on. *is steering Frank towards the sunroom*

Terri: *to Dominic* Look I know a seizure can be distressing to watch but it could only be a temporary set back okay? *Dominic nods* Some one up there likes him.

*Dr. Burgess walks into the ward*

Luke: Dr Burgess, I did the pre-op assessment on your collesectomy patient Melissa Dawson. *Dr. nods and Luke continues* Her collangea gland would indicate that she is non-separative and her gall bladder is only acutely inflamed and her amalaise is normal, so I’m wondering why the urgency?

Dr Burgess: How’s your hand Forlano?

Luke: Ah getting there. But I think it’s premature to operate today.

Dr. Burgess: So you can’t operate so what’s this, you’re trying to stop everyone else from operating?

Luke: I just think a more conservative treatment could be considered.

Dr. Burgess: Spoken like a physician Forlano. *walks off*

[A boy is standing outside his house, Ben and Scott are walking towards it. Inside the living room is a Christmas tree.]

Scott: It is February isn’t it?

[A small girl is lying on a couch]

  Ben: What’s your name?

Boy: *answering for his sister* Madeline James.

  Scott: What’s yours?

  Boy: Broden.

Ben: Hi Madeline, I’m Ben *gestures* and this is Scott. What’s the problem?

  Broden: She’s sick.

  Scott: Like spewing?

  Broden: heaps.

*Ben begins examining her, Scott starts walking around*

Ben: Are your mum and dad home? *Broden shakes his head* So you called triple zero?

  Broden: yeah.

Scott: *looks at vomit* There’s chewing gum in the vomit.*walks to table and picks up packet* Ah its Nicotine chewing gum.

Ben: How many chewies did you have Madeline?

Broden: I dunno. *Scott holds up empty packet of chewing gum*

Ben: Are you dizzy? *Madeline nods*

  Scott: Where’s you mum?

  Broden: At the shops.

Scott: Has she got a mobile?

  Broden: No.

Scott: Okay what about dad or relative?

Broden: *shakes head* Nah it’s just us and Mum.

Scott: Do you know what shops she went to? *Broden shakes head*

Ben: Heart rate 150 BP 140 over 95.

Scott: So we’ll have to call the cops then.

  Broden: What for?

Ben: We need to take Madeline to the hospital the cops can wait here for your mum. *Presses button on his radio and is about to speak*

  Broden: No don’t!

Ben: *opens a door, Broden is standing behind him* Mrs James?

[Camera shows her lying on her bed, she doesn’t respond] I’m Ben Markham from the ambulance service. Are you alright? *walks into the room* Mam? *Bends down beside the bed* Are you sick? *turns to Broden* Do you know what’s wrong with your mum?

  Broden: Nana died. Before Christmas.

Ben: And she’s been sad since then? *Broden nods* Okay, why don’t you go in there with Madeline and wait for me, huh? *Broden nods again and walks out*

Mrs James we need to take Madeline to the hospital. We need to take you there too. *Broden walks to the doorway again* Can you get up? We’ll look after you too. Please let me take you there.

  Mrs James: No

Ben: If you don’t come we’ll have to call community services. *Broden walks into the room*

Broden: No Madeline’s sick, you’re here to help Maddy.

  Ben: Mate..

Broden: *now hugging mum* You’re here to help Maddy that’s what you’re supposed to do.

[Aerial view of All Saints hospital, now inside Charlies room]

Nelson: Sorry Mr Ellis I’m being as gentle as I can.

  Charlie: Three times a day?!

Nelson: We have to flush out the pancreatic fluids so it doesn’t escape into your abdomen.

  Charlie: yeah yeah.

Nelson: Or it will start to digest your other organs.

  Charlie: Thanks for reminding me.

Von: Not to long more mate.

Nelson: There we are. *removes syringe filled with red liquid.* So Mr Ellis..

Charlie: You’re cutting up my insides, call me Charlie.

  Nelson: You’re a detective?

Charlie: Yeah but I can’t do anything about your parking fines.

Nelson: I was just wondering what branch you worked in? *turns and squeezes water out of some cotton wool.*

  Charlie: I’m just a cop.

Von: Don’t be so modest, he’s with the child protection unit, he’s one of the best.

Nelson: Von I’ve only got one more square left can you get some more please?

  Von: Won’t be a minute.

Nelson: So child protection unit, tough job. No wonder you need a little help to get you through. *is cleaning the wound*

Charlie: I hope you’re tipping those in alcohol.

Nelson: Would you like me to leave you the bottle. *Von enters room*

Charlie: Oh it’ll make it easier to listen to you.

[Camera now in Melissa Dawsons room where Kylie is examining her.]

Kylie: Okay do you have any allergies?

  Melissa: No.

  Kylie: Do you smoke?

  Melissa: Look at my complexion.

Kylie: That’s a no, and how’s the pain?

  Melissa: Its better.

Elizabeth: She’s still in a lot of discomfort despite the provider.

Kylie: Melissa’s had a injection of hiacyn alright?

  Jared: Uhuh.

Kylie: Could you please give Melissa some pethadene please?

Jared: Sure. *walks off, Kylie glances at him*

Melissa: Anything going on between you two?

Elizabeth: Mel how can the doctor assess you if you’re fit for an anesthetic if you’re not paying attention?

  Melissa: I am paying attention.

Kylie: Have you had anything to eat since this morning?

Melissa: Fat chance of that happening with the food nazi watching over me like a hawk.

Kylie: Good. *walks out of the room, Luke walks over to her.*

Luke: Can I talk to you?

Kylie: If you can talk and walk. How’s your hand?

  Luke: Ah its fine.

  Kylie: Getting any feeling back?

Luke: Not much, look what do you think about our gall bladder patient?

Kylie: Nice enough, nosy but nice. *walking out of Ward 17 doors now*

Luke: I don’t think she should be going into surgery today.

Kylie: Why not, she not an anesthetic risk.

Luke: It’s safer to put her on antibiotic therapy for 48 hours.

Kylie: Why is Burgess doing it then?

Luke: Because he has to get them in and out we all know his reputation. If it was me I’d wait for the inflammation to settle then do a ERCP.

Kylie: *pressing doors of lift* What to reduce the risk of septicemia?

Luke: Exactly, you should advice the anesthetist to refuse to gas her.

Kylie: You’d have better luck going over Burgess head.

Luke: Not if I ever want to work on a surgical rotation here again, *Kylie walks into the life* Kylie are you going to speak up?

Kylie: *shrugs* I spose I have to now that you have raised the issue.

[Inside house again, Madeline is on the couch with a oxygen mask over her face, Scott is sitting with her and Ben walks into the room.]

Scott: Are you saving that present under the Christmas tree?

  Madeline: Its Nana’s present.

Ben: *walking into room* I can’t find any empty alcohol bottles.

Scott: It makes no difference whether she’s on something or not.

  Ben: How is she?

Scott: Sinus tac 155 we need to transport.

Ben: I need a few more minutes with the mother.

Scott: She’s not going to come out Ben and we can’t force her.

Ben: DOCS are not going to let the kids come back here.

Scott: Well good if she’s not looking after them.

Ben: She’s depressed. The kids said that the grandmother lived here, she did most of the childcare. *Madeline vomits, and Scott goes to her*

Scott: Oopsie daisy. Alright *wipes Madeline’s mouth* Make the call Ben.

Ben: *radios* 978 to operations we require police assistance.

  Broden: Arsehole.

Ben: *still on the radio* We require police assistance at the current location.

[Shot of All Saints grounds, then to Josh’s room, where Dom and dad are sitting, Mitch walks in.]

Mitch: Okay. The CT scans showed no abnormalities so it shows what I suspected.

  Dad: Epilepsy?

  Mitch: That’s right.

Dominic: Why is this happening now?

Mitch: Well it might not have been sudden, I think Josh could have been having small seizures all week.

Bron: That’s what the numb fingertips and the drifting off was all about.

Mitch: Many patients who have amnesia from a great injury later develop post traumatic epilepsy.

Dad: Can you control it with drugs?

  Mitch: Hopefully yeah.

Dominic: But they might not work.

Mitch: I know it’s another hurdle but this form of epilepsy sometimes spontaneously resolves itself and I hope this is going to be the way with Josh. But if not we’re going to put him on anti-epileptic drugs.

Dominic: For how long?

Mitch: Well it could be for the rest of his life.

Dad: Guess this means we won’t be able to take him home just yet.

Mitch: Not until we have the seizures under control. Has he stirred at all?

Bron: Not yet.

*Von knocks on the door and speaks to Mitch* Charlie’s temp is 38.

Mitch: Right I’ll grab his notes and come in, *to Bron* if he wakes page me, I’ll see you later.

[Camera now focused on Charlie, Von is in the room too.]

Von: Okay. *door opens and Mitch walks in*

Mitch: Okay good news.

Charlie: Am I dead?

Mitch: I’ve spoken to your surgeon and your wound does not need any more surgical debrievement.

Charlie: Halleluiah!

Von: Mmm there you go temp 38.2.

Charlie: Don’t say that he’s on a roll!

Mitch: If it rises to 39 take blood cultures.

Von: Yeah.

Mitch: Now Charlie I believe you have been solicitating for alcohol.

Charlie: I was only joking, blokes got no sense of humor. Obviously you’ve never tried musical milk, metho mixed with milk.

Mitch: Look you’ve done some pretty hard yards, painful surgery and treatment and it would be a shame if it was all for nothing.

Charlie: yeah yeah.

Mitch: I don’t want to see you in here again alright? *Von and Mitch walk out, Nelson turns and starts to walk out*

Charlie: You smart arsed dobber! I know your type.

Nelson: You know if you knew me you would know I’m only telling you what you need to know for your health. And just for the record detective, I never mix my drinks.

[In corridor Joshes dad Frank is there, Luke walks past]

Frank: Excuse me Doctor, look I’m sorry about what I said earlier.

Luke: Forget it, you were upset about Josh.

Frank: Thanks.

*Kylie walks out of a room into the corridor, Bens patient is being wheeled out.

Luke: Ah excuse me *leaves Frank* Kylie how’d it go?

Kylie: The anesthetist won’t pull the plug.

Luke: Gutless wonder.

Kylie: It’s not enough to beat over surgery and this is Burgess specialty.

Luke: Burgess is complacent.

Kylie: A lot of patients in her condition have this procedure.

Luke: Well they shouldn’t.

Kylie *about to go in lift* I tried alright I’m sorry. *goes into lift, Luke follows*

[Back at Ward 17 front desk with Mitch, Nelson, Matt and Von.]

Nelson: *Looking in book* Here the Inebriate Act.

Mitch: That old chestnut?

Nelson: Its still active, look we can institutionalize Charlie to force him to stop drinking.

Matt: Or you could always shoot him. *Mitch chuckles*

Von: You thought he was a waste of resources in the first place.

Nelson: Well this might be cheaper in the long run, there is no way he’s going to give up without support.

Mitch: Look I don’t think having him committed is the answer. I was treating this alchie once and he snuck out of hospital and went down to the local and a publican called because he was still wearing his pj’s and he had a free draining nasoe gastric tube in situ.

Nelson: And didn’t you see that as a wasted effort?

Mitch: No just some pretty fine bourbon. *both walk off*

Von: *to Terri* Nelson needs a enema, Charlie’s sorry he survived the pancreatitis and I need a drink.

Terri: Well thanks for the update. *walks to Bron who is filling out some paper work, speaks to her* How’s Josh?

Bron: Starting to wake up he’s still a bit groggy though.

Terri: Want me to take him off you?

Bron: Why? He’s a patient that’s all.

Terri: He’s a patient who was on the train.

Bron: I can handle it Terri.

Terri: You haven’t spoken about Lyle once you know that?

Bron: You know you and Ben have so much in common, maybe you should marry him! Just don’t worry about me Terri. *walks off*

Matt: Ah…Terri *Terri walks over to Matt* Bron has filled this form out in Chinese. Now can you please help me decipher it? *Terri takes form* Look I know it’s not any of my business but I really don’t want to be here when she explodes if you know what I mean.

[Emergency, Scott and Ben are there a nurse and some sort of doctor? are walking past]

Nurse: Madeline absorbed a lot of nicotine but she’s going to be fine.

*Ben walks towards them*

Dr.:  And when is she going to be released?

Nurse: Well she’ll be hospitalized for a least a couple of days. *Dr. nods*

Ben: *to Dr. person* What’s going to happen to the kids?

Dr: We’ll assess the mother, if we can’t send the kids home they’ll be a intervention court order and we’ll place them in foster care.

Ben: For how long?

Dr.: Well that depends on the mother.

Ben: Will she get treatment too?

Dr.: We’ll send a doctor but if she refuses that’s her right. *Ben nods* No one likes breaking up families…what else can we do? *Camera shows Scott walking up to Broden who is sitting down on some plastic chairs.*

Scott: *to Broden* its going to be all right. *Ben walks past and heads down the corridor*

Scott: *wheeling trolley* Hey what’s the rush have we got another job?

Ben: We got to get back to the house!

Scott: Why?

Ben: I left some gear there.

Scott: No we didn’t its all packed up in the truck.

Ben: Alright I left my wallet there!

Scott: Ben we asked that woman to go into hospital and she refused. *Ben walks out of ‘Ambulance entry only’ door* You’ve got no reason to go back there! *you can hear ambulance siren in the distance and Ben opens the door of the ambulance* Alright I bags looking for the wallet then!

[Melissa’s room, Luke is sitting on a desk chair. Elizabeth is sitting on the other side]

Luke: Another option would be to go on antibiotic therapy for 48 hours, that would reduce the inflammation as well as the risks.

Melissa: What risks? No one said anything about risks.

Luke: Every surgery has risk involved with it but yours needn’t be so high. *Dr. Burgess is walking in*

Melissa: High?

Dr. Burgess: Dr. Forlano?

Elizabeth: What’s he on about? Why didn’t you tell us we should wait?

Dr Burgess: It wouldn’t make any difference in your sisters case.

Elizabeth: He says that it does.

Dr. Burgess: Dr. Forlano is only a register I’ve performed hundreds of collesectomys, isn’t that right? *Luke wheels his chair further back* I’m sorry you’ve been confused you should know I’ll be going into the operating theatre with the utmost confidence and so should you.

Elizabeth: *smiles* Dr Burgess does know your history.

Melissa: Okay, Dr. I want the surgery. *Dr nods and looks at Luke who scratches his head*

[Front desk at ward 17]

*Nelson and Von walking out of Charlies room and walk towards Terri*

Nelson: Von I’m not going to stop telling the patient what he should hear.

Von: Why don’t you just hit him over the head with the bottle?

Nelson: Yes what are you doing about it?

Von: I’m talking to the man and encouraging him to trust me and not clam up.

Terri: We can’t run their lives Nelson.

Nelson: So I should just pop out on my lunch break and pick him up a six pack.

Terri: You know what I mean.

Nelson: Look I worked in a dry community in the Northern Territory and it was everyones responsibility to keep it that way. You didn’t just turn a blind eye when someone tried to cross the line.

Von: Yes but if someone wants to leave you can’t drag them back kicking and screaming.

[Luke and Dr. Burgess walking out of Melissa’s room]

Luke: I consulted you about my concerns and the patient still wasn’t informed of her options. *Jared and Matt are watching with interest*

Dr. Burgess: You’re not entitled to have concerns.

Terri: What’s going on?

Matt: *To Jared* Twenty bucks Dr. Forlano wins.

Dr. Burgess: Dr Forlano contradicted me to my patient.

Luke: She has a right to know that there is a more conservative safer approach.

Dr. Burgess: The optimum timing for surgical intervention of acute colleasectamy is debatable. But my experience as a working surgeon that this patients condition warrants surgery.

Luke: I disagree.

Dr. Burgess: It’s not your decision.

Luke: I was acting in the best interest of the patient.

Dr. Burgess: So am I, and I won’t have a register telling me I’m not, I’ll be in the theatre if there are any further problems. *walks off*

Jared: *to Matt* I’ll have that twenty in small unmarked bills thanks.

[Mrs James house, Ben walks into her room.]

Ben: Mrs James, remember me? I’ve just come from the hospital. Madeline is going to be alright. But I have to inform you that DOCS is considering taking Madeline and Broden and putting them in foster care. Is that what you want? Your kids to live with strangers?

Mrs James: Maybe they’re better off.

Ben: No they’re not. They feel the same way you do right now.

Mrs James: She was there grandmother but she was mum

Ben: And now they’ve lost their mum too *Mrs James starts crying* *gets Christmas present* Is this going to open by itself? *takes her hand* Why don’t you come with me to the hospital? *Mrs James nods*

[Ward 17, Kylie walks through doors and heads towards Melissa’s room, Jared walks out of it.]

Jared: ah Kylie, Dr Burgess has asked for Melissa to be put on a pethedene PCA for the pain.

Kylie: Okay I’ve ordered the antibiotics I’ll give the first dose.

[Camera to front desk]

Luke: *to Terri* Terri what’s happening with Melissa?

Terri: Dr Burgess has cancelled Melissa’s surgery.

Luke: Why has her condition changed?

Terri: No he got a call from St. Angelas to do emergency surgery on a ruptured duodemal ulcer.

Luke: He hasn’t got any emergency.

Terri: Yeah, he got the call just before Jared had given Melissa her pre med.

Luke: Ah convenient that it would come in before she was prepped for theatre.

Kylie: Luke Dr Burgess has put Melissa on a course of antibiotics.

Luke: *laughs* Good call now where would he get an idea like that?

Kylie: Love to be around the day when some junior doctor tells you you’re doing the wrong thing.

Luke: I’m sure I’d listen to any valid medical argument. *Kylie laughs, Von coughs*

Matt: *laughs* Yeah right!

[Tea room with Jared at sink and Kylie and desk filling in paperwork.]

Jared: So Burgess changed his mind decided to cancel the operation huh?

Kylie: Yeah Luke got what he wanted.

Jared: Yeah can you believe Luke stuck his neck out? You’d expect that from Mitch but not from Dr Luke Forlano. You want caf or decaf?

Kylie:  Actually I can’t stop *gets up and starts packing up books*

Jared: Can’t or you don’t want to?

Kylie: Oh don’t be paranoid I’m busy alright?

Jared: So am I but no one’s going to miss us for five minutes.

Kylie: You don’t understand what it’s like you’re not an intern! If I had five minutes to spare form what I’m doing there’d be three other things I should be doing instead.

Jared: Yes that’s right I’m just a nurse! Kylie its not that I don’t understand it’s that you won’t tell me!

Kylie: Look if I don’t finish too late tonight I’ll came over okay? We’ll get take away or something, my treat. *walks off*

Jared: *walks to door* Yeah fine.

[Front desk at Ward 17, Mitch is looking at x-rays.]

Mitch: You think Burgess will make a complaint?

Luke: He won’t it’ll only draw attention to his own stuff up.

Von: *to Mitch handing him a folder* Charlie’s complaining of nausea.

Mitch; It’ll be the painkillers give him 10mL of Maxilon. *writing it on charts*

Von: Thank you. Nelson would you look after that please?

Nelson: Walking to drug room, yeah. Thanks Von what would I do without you giving me orders?

Von: Thank you.

Terri: *to Von* Now you’re just winding him up.

Von: *laughs* Oh god I’m loving it!

*Dominic walks in from Josh’s room*

Dominic: Josh has been awake for about ten minutes I thought I better let somebody know.

Mitch: Okay thanks I’ll come in. Where’s Bron?

Bron: *pops head out of drug room* Here, just doing Mrs Hills meds, why?

Mitch: Josh is awake. *walks to Josh’s room*

[In Josh’s room]

Mitch: the sleeping beauty is awake, how are you feeling?

Josh: Pretty good actually. Yeah um dad said I had a seizure?

Frank: He was asking.

Bron: *walks in room* I’m just going to take your blood pressure Josh.

Mitch: The head injury left some scar on your brain and when the electro chemicals waves hit the scar they go berserk and you have a seizure.

Josh: So I can’t go home?

Mitch: Fraid not.

Josh: How…Mr Tanner? *Dominic walks up and holds Joshs hand* Actually no it doesn’t matter.

Dominic: What doesn’t matter?

Josh: No…don’t…

Dominic: What? *Josh starts having another seizure. Bron hits button.* Oh no its happening again.

Mitch:  *removing pillows* Bron more Diazapan. *rolls Josh on side, Terri runs in*

Terri: Dom can you take Frank to the sun room please. *Paula also comes in*

[Camera shows Bron in drugs room, she sees the card from Lyles parents, back to Josh’s room Mitch puts a tube in his mouth.]

Mitch: It’s no good his jaw is clamped shut. I can’t get it in, where’s that diazapan?

*Paula closes curtains*

Terri: Paula can you go and help Bron please?

[Back to front desk, Matt answers the phone “Ward 17 Matt speaking” Paula walks into drug room. Bron isn’t there.]

Paula: Jared can you check some Diazapan with me?

Jared: Is Josh fitting again?

Paula: Yep. *takes medication*

[To engaged sign on cubicle door in a bathroom. Bron is inside reading the card and starts to cry. Back to Joshs room. Josh is still fitting and on his side.]

Jared: How come the diazapan isn’t working?

Mitch: I don’t know lets try some Lauranzapan.

Jared: Alright I’ll get it.

Terri: Where was Bron?

Paula: *Taking Josh and holding him on his side* It’s okay I’ve got him, you go.

Mitch: This is going on way to long.

[Front desk Matt on phone]

Matt: Visiting hours are at 8pm and then after *Terri interrupts*

Terri: Have you seen Bron?

Matt: She’s in the loo. *Terri walks out as Nelson is walking in*

Nelson: Need me in there?

Terri: Mitch has got it under control. [Camera on Dom who is watching. Matt answers the phone again. Terri walks into the Toilets.]

Terri: Bron are you in here?

Bron: I walked out on Josh.

Terri: Come on, let me in. *Taps on door*  Come on. *Bron unlocks door, she is sitting on the floor holding the card. Terri kneels down next to her.*

Bron: He stayed when they asked us to get out.

Terri: Bron what happened on the train wasn’t your fault.

Bron: Lyle was only there because of me. I wouldn’t go and he wouldn’t leave me. And that’s why he’s dead.

Terri: You were doing what you thought you should do, and Lyle was, he was doing the same thing. I’m glad you’re alive Bron. You know we all are.

Bron: So am I.

[Joshs room]

Mitch: Come on mate. We got to stop this before he gets brain damage.

Jared: More Lauzapan?

Mitch: No lets inchoate and anesthetize. *turns Josh on to his back, machine starts trilling*   He’s arrested!

[Bathroom, Bron and Terri are sitting there together in silence. Back to ward where Dom is looking out from the sun room. Joshes room.]

Jared: *shines torch in Joshes eyes* Pupils are fixed and dilated. Mitch, he’s brain dead.*Mitch shines torch in Joshs eyes, machine is still trilling, Mitchs hand hovers above it for a couple of seconds, he turns it off.*

[Melissa’s room, her hand is on the PCA]

Jared: It delivered metered doses so there’s no chance of OD-ing. You just need to push that button if you have any pain.

Elizabeth: Has Melissas surgery been moved till tomorrow?

Jared: No no, Dr Burgess wants Melissa to have antibiotics first.

Elizabeth: Why didn’t he come and tell Melissa that in person?

Jared: He’s said he’ll be in sometime later today.

Elizabeth: Did he say when exactly?

Melissa: He’ll be here when he can just relax.

Elizabeth: The man has probably realized that he made a mistake and he’s too gutless to face you.

Melissa: The doctor has an emergency at another hospital.

Elizabeth: The other doctor was right all along then wasn’t he?

Jared: Umm I think Dr. Burgess is best to answer that question.

Elizabeth: We’ll take that as a yes.

[Camera at front of Ward 17, Luke is walking towards Mitch]

Mitch: Couldn’t stop the seizure, drugs had no effect at all.

Luke: And the stress was too much for his heart and brain. Not often that you see that status of epilepsy.

Mitch: Well the damage was already done before you operated mate.

Luke: Well it may be the last ever surgery that I do *indicated arm* and it’s not such a good way to go out. *Terri walks past and goes towards Matt*

Terri: Do you know where Dominic is?

Matt: He went out to get some fresh air.

*Terri walks out and Ben walks in and heads towards her.*

Ben: Is Bron around?

Terri: Yeah I sent her home, are you heading out? *Ben nods and they both exit the ward*

Nelson: Well you win Von, I didn’t get anywhere with Charlie.

Von: Nelson why aren’t you and I best buddies?

Nelson: Well because you are always riding me.

Von: Well its not working is it? See I think I’m going to have to use a different approach with you.

[Terri is sitting in the grounds with Dominic]

Dom: After all we’ve gone through. I shouldn’t have put him through it, or frank. He wasn’t meant to survive the train crash.

Terri: We can’t say that Dom.

Dom: Yeah I can, have you ever heard a boys choir sing abide with me?

Terri: Yeah, it’s beautiful.

Dom: Enid Sutherby our music teacher taught a new class of boys every year. She died on the platform because I took off her emergency tag.

I decided they should take Josh instead so I took her life to save his. I even gave her the last rites. Ever heard of anything more hypocritical? I was playing god, and I ended up killing two people.

Terri I can’t justify to you what I’ve done I don’t know how I’m even going to live with myself.

[Nelson is wheeling Charlie into a meeting room. There are quite a few people there sitting down. Nelson walks to the front podium.]

:::Voice Over::: Nelson

“We thought we could find a easier softer way. But we could not.” [Luke is standing on the balcony.]

“…Some of us tried to hang on to our old ideas and the result was nil. Until we let go absolutely.” [Elizabeth is reading a book sitting next to Melissa who is in her bed]

“…We are always in collision with something or someone.” [Jared watches Kylie]

Even though are motives are good.” [Frank is holding his dead sons hand]

“…Many of us exclaimed what an order I cannot go through with it. [Frank lifts Joshs hand and kisses it, Paula sits next to him holding his hand, He starts crying]

“…Do not be discouraged. We are not saints.” [Dom and Terri hugging]

“…but we claim a spiritual progress rather than a spiritual perfection there are those too who suffer from grave emotional and mental disorders but many of them do recover.” [Rose is sitting on a bench in the grounds of all saints, Mitch walks towards her. He is holding Lucy, he hands her to rose who looks surprised and happy, she kisses Lucy]

“…if they have the capacity to be honest.”  [Camera shows Bron lying on bed holding a photo of Lyle]

“…we made a searching and fearless moral inventorial of ourselves.” [She brings photo up to her face and looks at it as Ben walks in]

“…unto god, to ourselves and to other human beings,” [Bron starts crying]

“…the exact nature of our wrongs. Through prayer and meditation we seek the knowledge,” [Ben lies puts his hand on her shoulder and lies down next to her. He kisses her on the back of her head.]

“…and the power to carry on.”

Nelson: Hi my name is nelson and I’m an alcoholic. *he looks at Charlie who smiles.*
