Chapter Thirty:
"Umm, guys, there's gonna be a problem with me being home by eleven tonight..." Hallie said to the answering machine in Orlando.

Ali ran toward the phone and grabbed it.  "What's the problem?" she asked breathlessly.

"Oh, Als, hi, umm, well, the problem is that I'm just not gonna be home."

"Okay.  When are you gonna be home?  Me and Kev're having a cookout in like, two days.  That is, considering that everything of mine is at his house."

"Oh, I don't know if I'll be back by then," Hallie said, biting her lip.

"How come?" Ali asked casually, walking into Jamie's room and picking up her purple t-shirt that Jamie had borrowed the month prior.

"Well, I'm kinda in, umm, New York City."

Ali nearly dropped the phone.  "New York City?"

"Yep."

"May I ask just exactly why?" Ali asked, sitting down on Jamie's bed.  She immediately stood up and removed a shoe from underneath her.

"I had to get out of Orlando... this thing with Brian, I just don't wanna deal with it anymore.  And I really wanna get back to dancing, I haven't done anything for quite a while."

"Yeah, that's true," Ali said.  She went on carefully, not wanting to make Hallie angry.  "Is Carson gonna get you some auditions?"

"Yeah, I'm staying at his house," Hallie replied, twirling the phone cord around her finger.  She glanced at the clock on the microwave.  "And I better be going, if I wanna be in time for the rehersal for TRL."

"You gonna be on the show today?"

"Not really, Carson said that he had a few surprise guests and that he wanted me to meet them for some audition or something.  Knowing him, he'll stick me in the Green Room the entire time I'm there.  But I better be going if I wanna make it there in time.  So I'll give you guys a ring later, I guess."

"Yeah, sure.  Hey, if you get on TV give me a wave.  And if the guest is David Boreanaz, tell him I think he's hot."

Hallie laughed.  "I'll give you a wave, but David?  Come on, what about Kevin?"

"David looks like Kevin.  Therefore, he's hot."

"Sure, I'll tell him.  See ya."

"Later."

"CARSON!  Where is that idiot of a cousin of mine?" Hallie asked herself as she wandered around MTV's studios.  She turned a corner and promptly ran into someone, causing her to fall to the ground.  "Oww..."

"Oh, I am so sorry, I didn't mean to run into you like that," a male voice said quickly, reaching a hand out to help her up.

"It's okay, really, I'm fine...  JC?"

"Hallie?  Hey, how's it going?  What are you doing at MTV?"

"Carson's my cousin, what are you doing here?"

"Surprise guests, we have some promoting to do for the next single.  Carson's your cousin?"

"Yeah."

"I'm surprised he didn't tell me about you sooner.  He said that we had to meet someone here a little while ago."

"He was probably portaining to me.  He told me that I was supposed to meet a 'special guest' today, that's why I'm here."

"Well, I'm glad I saw you again.  You know, I think we're in need of some dancers for our next leg of the tour this year.  Would you be interested?"

"Sure," Hallie said excitedly.  "When would I have to audition?"

"Oh, I think you already auditioned at the Listening Party," JC said with a smile.  "I'm the one who needs a dancer, and the final cut's up to me.  Which means, if you want it, you've got the job."

"Great."
