Text

تَعْرُجُ الْمَلَائِكَةُ وَالرُّوحُ إِلَيْهِ فِي يَوْمٍ كَانَ مِقْدَارُهُ خَمْسِينَ أَلْفَ سَنَةٍ

Translation

To him the angels and the Spirit mount up in a day whereof the measure is fifty thousand years.

Attitude

Think what one Arab understood at those times.

Idea

The speed of angels is so much that they could travel just in a single day the distance that takes 50000 years for you to pass.

Calculations:

A: Angels’ speed

H: Fastest reachable speed for humankind at those times

A / H = 50000 * 365

H = A / (50000 * 365)

Assume that the angels move with speed of light, then:

A = 3 * 10^8 m/s

H = 16.44 m/s

This is roughly the fastest reachable speed by a horse which was the fastest speed at that era. http://hypertextbook.com/facts/2000/AndrewSigal.shtml

Consequences

1) According to Soureh Sajdeh (32), Ayeh (5)

يدبر الامر من السماء الى الارض ثم يعرج اليه في يوم كان مقداره الف سنة مما تعدون

it says that: He rules (all) affairs From the heavens to the earth : in the end will (all affairs) go up to Him, on a day, the space where of will be (as) a thousand years of your reckoning.

We already assumed that the speed of angels is the speed of light. According to this Ayeh the return speed towards the God, is 1/50 of the speed of light (i.e. its speed is 1000 times more than ours while the angels' speed was 50000 times more than ours speed). This is an interesting result as well, because:

Molecular bonds break apart at around 1/50 of the speed of light. So this is an upper bound of the achievable speed by molecules.
