Cabbies on Utar fund-raising drive

IPOH: Taxi drivers in the Kinta Valley are doing their bit to raise funds for the Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (Utar) campus in Kampar.

More than 200 of them from four associations – the Ipoh Taxi Operators Association, Ulu Kinta Taxis and Hired Vehicles Association, Bercham Taxi Drivers Friendship Association and Menglembu And Buntong Taxi Drivers Association – are raising funds for the university from their passengers in a three-day drive, which started yesterday.

The drivers, who operate at 17 locations in Ipoh, Ulu Kinta, Bercham, Menglembu and Buntong, are helping the state MCA collect funds for Utar.

There is a collection tin in the vehicles of participating drivers. The drivers are also giving out mugs to passengers who donate RM10 and above.

State MCA chairman Datuk Ong Ka Chuan, who launched the drive yesterday, said the taxi drivers had targeted to collect RM50,000 over the three days.

He said the taxi drivers’ fund-raising drive for the Tunku Abdul Rahman College Fund a few years ago had proved successful and hoped the present one would be equally fruitful.
