| The Zen Shiatzu Philosophy Shiatzu is an ancient Japanese healing art which promotes relaxation and the maintenance of good health. It incorporates gentle manipulation, stretches and pressure techniques to encourage the free flow of energy throughout the body. In the 10th century, Japanese monks began to study Buddhism in China, observing the healing methods of Traditional Chinese Medicine. The Japanese not only adopted Traditional Chinese Medicine but also began to enhance its methods, eventually achieving a unique Japanese form called Shiatzu. Shiatzu is a Japanese word translated literally as 'finger' (shi) 'pressure' (atsu). As well as fingers, practitioners also use their thumbs, whole hand, elbow, knees, and feet to press, massage, and manipulate the body. Other techniques of Shiatzu include shaking, rotating, stretching, vibrating, lifting, rolling, and brushing. The ancient theory of Oriental Medicine is based on the understanding that life energy, known as 'Ki', flows throughout the body along a network of non-physical pathways or channels known as meridians. When energy flow is consistently blocked, depleted, or excessively strong in any of these Ki channels, it will show in the body as symptoms of illness or disease. In other words, your good health is dependent on balanced and freely flowing life energy. Ki is stimulated by touch and Zen Shiatzu techniques are designed to help remove blockages and balance Ki flow, bringing harmony and healing to the whole body.
