Tomorrow Comes
Part Three

A/N: This is getting sillier. -_-;

"OK," Koushiro said, rubbing his temples. "We're going to start with act 2. Sora, you're up first singing 'On My Own'. It's a very sad song- put lots of emotion in it. I want you to move the audience to tears."
Sora nodded as Koushiro cued the tape.

SORA: And now I'm all alone again
Nowhere to turn, no one to go to
Without a home without a friend
Without a face to say hello to
And now the night is near
I can make believe he's here

Sometimes I walk alone at night
When everybody else is sleeping
I think of him and I'm happy
With the company I'm keeping
The city goes to bed
And I can live inside my head

Own my own
Pretending he's beside me
All alone
I walk with him till morning
Without him
I feel his arms around me
And when I lose my way I close my eyes
And he has found me

In the rain the pavement shines like silver
All the lights are misty in the river
In the darkness, the trees are full of starlight
And all I see is him and me forever and forever

And I know it's only in my mind
That I'm talking to myself and not to him
And although I know that he is blind
Still I say, there's a way for us

I love him
But when the night is over
He is gone
The river's just a river
Without him
The world around me changes
The trees are bare and everywhere
The streets are full of strangers

I love him
But every day I'm learning
All my life
I've only been pretending
Without me
His world would go on turning
A world that's full of happiness
That I have never known

I love him
I love him
I love him
But only on my own.

Mimi and Miyako were wailing again, harder than before if that was possible, and this time Hikari joined them. Miyako grabbed the closest person, who also happened to be Hikari, and sobbed into her shirt. Kari returned the favor, the waterworks threatening a flood. Suddenly Hikari blushed, realizing the position she was in.
Everyone blinked as Kari and Miyako went from blubbering like they just lost their best friends to making out. Sweatdrops appeared as they hit the floor with a thump.
"How did _that_ happen?"
Koushiro sweatdropped. "Why me? Can I have...Sora and Taichi please? Now, this is 'A Little Fall of Rain,' and Eponine has arrived at the barricades mortally wounded after delivering a message from Marius to Cosette."

SORA:
Don't you fret, M'sieur Marius
I don't feel any pain
A little fall of rain
Can hardly hurt me now
You're here, that's all I need to know
And you will keep me safe
And you will keep me close
And rain will make the flowers grow.

TAICHI:
But you will live, 'Ponine - dear God above...
If I could close your wounds with words of love...

SORA:
Just hold me now, and let it be.
Shelter me, comfort me...

TAICHI:
You would live
A hundred years
If I could show you how
I won't desert you now...

SORA:
The rain can't hurt me now
This rain will wash away what's past
And you will keep me safe
And you will keep me close
I'll sleep in your embrace at last
The rain that brings you here
Is Heaven-blessed!
The skies begin to clear
And I'm at rest
A breath away from where you are
I've come home from so far

So don't you fret, M'sieur Marius
I don't feel any pain
A little fall of rain
Can hardly hurt me now
That's all I need to know
And you will keep me safe
And you will keep me close
And rain
Will make the flowers...

TAICHI: [in counterpoint]
Hush-a-bye, dear Eponine
You won't feel any pain
A little fall of rain
Can hardly hurt you now
I'm here

I will stay with you
Till you are sleeping
And rain
Will make the flowers...

[She dies. Marius kisses her, then lays her on the ground.]

TAICHI:
Grow.

This time, most of the Digidestined were sniffling, including Ken, where he was hiding out backstage. Daisuke, who was aware of Ken's presence by now, slipped backstage to say hello. Or something of the sort.
Mimi was still crying.
Hikari and Miyako were...otherwise occupied. Takeru sweatdropped, because he was pretty sure he had seen one of Hikari's pink gloves fly past his head. Well, so much for her supposed crush on him.
"Ahem..." Koushiro said, glad that he wouldn't need either Hikari or Miyako for anything. He felt sorry for Iori, now diligently working on scenery. Reliability, that was Iori. "All the guys up here for 'Drink with Me'. Um...and can I have Mimi and Sora help too? The only important thing that's happened is that Valjean gets ahold of Javert, who was captured as a spy by the students, and lets him go, saying, 'Your life is safe in my hands.'"
Daisuke cleared his throat from somewhere in the wings. "Ano...is..is it OK if- if Ken joins us?"
Koushiro blinked. "Um...I suppose so." No one said anything to disagree, so he grabbed another script and did some quick editing on it and the others. "All right, let's roll."

[The defenders settle down for the night with wine and a song.]

WILLIS:
Marius, rest.

KEN:
Drink with me
To days gone by
Sing with me
The songs we knew

MICHAEL:
Here's to pretty girls
Who went to our heads

KEN:
Here's to witty girls
Who went to our beds

ALL:
Here's to them
And here's to you!

MICHAEL:
Drink with me
To days gone by
Can it be
You fear to die?
Will the world remember you
When you fall?
Could it be your death
Means nothing at all?
Is your life just one more lie?

MEN:
Drink with me
To days
Gone by
To the life
That used
To be
Let the wine of friendship
Never run dry

WOMEN: (in counterpoint)
Drink with me
To days
Gone by
To the life
That used
To be
At the shrine of friendship
Never say die

ALL:
Here's to you
And here's
To me...

TAICHI:
Do I care if I should die
Now he goes across the sea?
Life without Cosette
Means nothing at all
Would you weep, Cosette,
Should Marius fall?
Will you weep,
Cosette,
For me?

[Marius settles down to sleep.]

Takeru had to admit it- he was quite impressed with Ken's singing. He did it even better than he did soccer...or school...or...
Daisuke grinned. Ken was definitely cute when he sang. Of course, he was cute all the time...
Koushiro groaned. It was worse than a soap opera with this group. And not only that, but he apparently had no chance with Miyako. He should have seen that she liked Hikari...
"OK, everyone...except for Takeru, pretend to be asleep. He gets to do the solo 'Bring him Home'."

[Valjean is standing over Marius at the barricade.]

TAKERU:
God on high
Hear my prayer
In my need
You have always been there
He is young
He's afraid
Let him rest
Heaven blessed.
Bring him home
Bring him home
Bring him home.
He's like the son I might have known
If God had granted me a son.
The summers die
One by one
How soon they fly
On and on
And I am old
And will be gone.
Bring him peace
Bring him joy
He is young
He is only a boy
You can take
You can give
Let him be
Let him live
If I die
Let me die
Let him live
Bring him home
Bring him home
Bring him home

"OK- at the barricades everyone is shot and killed except for Marius and Valjean. Valjean takes the wounded and unconscious Marius into the sewers. And then we get to...'Javert's Suicide'."
"Awwww, man. Not only do I have to be the villian, I have to kill myself," Daisuke complained.
"Deal with it," Koushiro replied.
"I feel your pain, man," Ken said seriously, patting Daisuke on the shoulder.
Daisuke just groaned.
Koushiro looked at the people onstage still pretending to sleep. "Um...you guys can get up now."
"Oh, OK," Mimi said, scrambling off of Sora, where she had most likely been discreetly getting in a few gropes. His theory was pretty much confirmed when both disappeared offstage to the bathroom.
"Why me?" he moaned again. "Daisuke, now."
"OK, OK, sheesh," Daisuke muttered.

DAISUKE:
Who is this man?
What sort of devil is he?
To have me caught in a trap
And choose to let me go free?
It was his hour at last
To put a seal on my fate
Wipe out the past
And wash me clean off the slate!
All it would take
Was a flick of his knife
Vengence was his
And he gave me back my life!
Damned if I'll live in the debt of a theif!
Damned if I'll yield at the end of the chase.
I am the Law and the Law is not mocked
I'll spit his pity right back in his face
There is nothing on earth that we share
It is either Valjean or Javert!

How can I now allow this man
To hold dominion over me?
This desperate man whom I have hunted
He gave me my life, he gave me freedom.
I should have perished by his hand!
It was his right.
It was my right to die as well
Instead I live, but live in hell!
And my thoughts fly apart
Can this man be believed?
Shall his sins be forgiven?
Shall his crimes be reprieved?
And must I now begin to doubt
Who never doubted all these years?
My heart is stone and still it trembles
The world I have known is lost in shadow.
Is he from heaven or from hell?
And does he know
That granting me my life today
This man has killed me even so?
I am reaching, but I fall
And the stars are black and cold.
As I stare into the void
Of a world that cannot hold
I'll escape now from the world
From the world of Jean Valjean
There is nowhere I can turn
There is no way to go on.....

[He throws himself into the swollen river.]

"That was depressing," Takeru commented.
"I'll second that," Ken said.
"Yeah, no kidding..." Daisuke agreed. "Hey, we just agreed on something!"
"Well, we don't exactly have a girl to fight over anymore," Takeru grumbled, pointing to a considerably-mussed Hikari sitting next to an equally-mussed Miyako.
"Good point," Daisuke grumbled.
Ken looked back and forth between the two. Drats! He'd be forgotten yet again...
He yelped as someone grabbed him and hauled him behind the curtains. "Something wrong, Ken?" Taichi said, smirking at him.
"Uh...no..."
"Yeeeessss," Yamato mocked.
"OK, OK, I have a little, teeny, weenie crush on Daisuke, but he obviously-"
"Likes you as much as he likes my brother," Yamato offered.
"But- they- I can't-"
"Ken. It's called a _threesome_," Taichi said.
"..."
Yamato blinked. That was an interesting shade of red.
"Look, we'll help you out, OK?" Taichi said, oblivious.
Kan nodded, then passed out with a nosebleed.
"Taichi! Tai, where did you go?" Koushiro groaned.
"Right here," Tai said, coming back onstage smirking like a cat that got the canary.
"Finally! I need you to do 'Empty Chairs at Empty Tables'. Marius is recovering, but at the same time he's missing his friends like crazy."

[Marius, recovering from his wounds, imagines he's back at the ABC cafe.]

TAICHI:
There's a grief that can't be spoken
There's a pain goes on and on
Empty chairs at empty tables
Now my friends are dead and gone

Here they talked of revolution
Here it was they lit the flame
Here they sang about tomorrow
And tomorrow never came.

From the table in the corner
They could see a world reborn
And they rose with voices ringing
I can hear them now!
The very words that they had sung
Became their last communion
On the lowly barricade..
At dawn.

Oh my friends, my friends forgive me.

[The ghosts of those who died on the barricade appear.]

That I live and you are gone
There's a grief that can't be spoken
There's a pain goes on and on

Phantom faces at the window
Phantom shadows on the floor
Empty chairs at empty tables
Where my friends will meet no more.

[The ghosts fade away.]

Oh my friends, my friends, don't ask me
What your sacrifice was for
Empty chairs at empty tables
Where my friends will sing no more...

"And, finally," Koushiro said, "We're coming to the end. Marius realizes that Valjean was the one who saved him from the barricades, and Cosette and Marius marry. Cosette and Marius hear that Valjean had gone away, and rush to his house. When they get there, they find Valjean, dying. I'll need Kari and Sora backstage- we'll have wings for you as well at the performance. I think I'll put the other characters who died back there as well..." he broke off, muttering to himself. "Um...everyone else, backstage as well. Taichi, Takeru, and Yamato, I need you onstage." He paused for a moment. "Would someone go get Mimi and Sora?"
"Never mind, we're here," Mimi said, popping her head out of the curtains. Her hat was missing, as were Sora's gloves. "Where did you want us?"
"Backstage, backstage," Koushiro muttered, starting the music.

TAKERU: (to Cosette)
Now you are here
Again beside me
Now I can die in peace
For now my life is blessed

YAMATO:
You will live, Papa, you're going to live
It's too soon, too soon to say goodbye.

TAKERU:
Yes, Cosette, forbid me now to die
I'll obey
I will try
On this page
I write my last confession
Read it well
When I at last am sleeping.
It's a story
Of those who always loved you
Your mother gave her life for you
Then gave you to my keeping.

[Fantine's spirit appears.]

KARI:
Come with me
Where chains will never bind you
All your grief
At last, at last behind you.
Lord in Heaven
Look down on him in mercy.

TAKERU:
Forgive me all my trespasses
And take me to your glory.

[Eponine's spirit appears as well]
KARI & SORA:
Take my hand
And lead me to salvation
Take my love
For love is everlasting.
KARI, SORA, & TAKERU:
And remember
The truth that once was spoken
To love another person
Is to see the face of God!

[The spirits of the other people who died at the barricades appear now as well]

ALL:
Do you hear the people sing
Lost in the valley of the night
It is the music of a people
Who are climbing to the light

For the wretched of the earth
There is a flame that never dies
Even the darkest night will end
And the sun will rise.

They will live again in freedom
In the garden of the Lord
They will walk behind the plough-share
They will put away the sword
The chain will be broken
And all men will have their reward!

Will you join in our crusade?
Who will be strong and stand with me?
Somewhere beyond the barricade
Is there a world you long to see?
Do you hear the people sing
Say, do you hear the distant drums?
It is the future that they bring
When tomorrow comes!
Will you join in our crusade?
Who will be strong and stand with me?
Somewhere beyond the barricade
Is there a world you long to see?
Do you hear the people sing
Say, do you hear the distant drums?
It is the future that they bring
When tomorrow comes!
Tomorrow comes!
Tomorrow comes!

[The curtain falls.]

"Beautiful!" Miyako said, whistling. "It was soooooo...sad!" She and Kari broke into tears again, grabbing each other.
"That was good," Koushiro admitted, "but we'll still need lots of practice. Same time tomorrow!"

Lucia: I'm thinking about doing a sequel to this where they do another play. Should I or should I not, and suggestions for what play are needed.
