     THE MUSTARD SEED

Albuquerque District of the United Methodist Women

                                             February, 2009

                                                             Message from the President

·     Mark your calendars! This is the year that we in the Albuquerque district host all of the women of our conference. On October 23 and 24, the New Mexico Conference Annual Meeting of United Methodist Women will meet at Central United Methodist Church. It is always special to get to welcome everyone to our area. It is a beautiful time of the year here, and they will so enjoy returning to Albuquerque. So please be ready to make everyone welcome and save the time yourself so that you can participate. On another page of the Mustard Seed, there is a list of hosting duties for each unit in the district. You will be cooperating with other units, so contact them right away to determine how you will work together.

·    On the “Plan Ahead Activities” page, all of our currently scheduled events are noted. The next big one is the Spiritual Retreat Weekend. Anne Bonner, the Conference Spiritual Growth Coordinator, is planning with leaders Rev. Cheri Lyon and Rev. Judy Romero-Oak for a multi-disciplinary experience “Faith Journey – Traveling with God as My Compass.” What a wonderful weekend (March 27-29, 2009) we have in store for us at Sacramento Methodist Assembly! The registration form is on another page.

·    Our Annual District Meeting will give us a chance to visit Santa Fe! St. John’s United Methodist Women are hosting us on April 25 beginning with registration at 8:30 a.m. Kathy Byrd, our vice-president, is working with many people to make it a very special day, and the Santa Fe ladies are wonderful hosts.

·    You received your District Directories before Christmas. They are the product of Dana Underwood’s skilled organization and use of the computer. Thank you for your input. Thank you, Dana for your efforts. We have the most current information that each of you sent. Your response was great! Since the mailing, there are a few corrections and some changes, so a page of corrections is included in this Mustard Seed. Please take note!

·    The District Executive Committee met the next to last weekend in January in Santa Fe. You must thank your district officers and the Conference Officers that live in our Albuquerque District. Everyone attended except one who had a medical situation with her husband. What effort and what good input they gave in our planning!

·    This year our district has no Mission Coordinator for Membership Nurture and Outreach. So I, as president, collected the numbers from each of your units. Here are the stats: Membership at the end of 2007 – 1084; new members – 63; removed by death – 30; lost – 94; total now – 1023.

·    There are several ways that we can increase in membership: invite and go by to pick them up, make programming informative, relevant, and spirit-filled; create a sense of community that is inclusive; form a new circle, be in mission. There may be a new unit in the next few months. We need more good women who are in mission for the Lord. We are always welcoming.

·    We are doing very well in accomplishing our district goals. We are still seeking funds to furnish the playground at the Four Corners Daycare Center, Covenant Education Center. Funds from units and funds from the district Mission Committee total a little over $2000. Our goal for the year is $6000, although we know that $6000 is much less than the cost of equipping a playground. Plan a project and make a second-mile gift (beyond your mission giving pledge).

·    Members of the Nominating Committee will be contacting some of you to assume District offices. Please prayerfully consider their request and say “yes.” We love the way the purpose of UMW helps us to see ourselves as whole persons before God and we covenant to make that place known by persons the world over.

Vice-President’s Message

Come one; come all to the Albuquerque District UMW meeting at St. John’s in Santa Fe, Saturday, April 25, 2008. Registration and refreshments will be from 8:30 to 9:50 am. During this time, you will have a chance to view our mission displays and the Program Resources tables. The program will begin with worship, singing and prayers, our memorial service, the offering and the keynote by Aaron Scarborough from Sacramento Methodist Assembly. Our highlighted mission project this year is Covenant Education Center, Farmington. The scripture lesson for the meeting is: Genesis 6:9,12-14,17-22; and 9:8-15.

Our theme for this year is “Caring for God’s Creation.” One of the goals for this year is for us to be more environmentally and ecologically aware of how we impact the environment God has provided us. Our worship, songs, and key note will address some of these issues. Margery Williams will also have information at her table in the mission display area at St. John’s in Santa Fe.

We are asking that each unit in the district send ways that they and their home churches are caring for God’s creation; please send these projects and ideas to: Kathy Byrd at [email protected] for incorporation into our program.

At the end of The Mustard Seed, there is a registration form for the District meeting. Alice Fenton has requested that we use one form, one check and a list of attendees for each church. We realize that may be impossible, so please make copies of the form to distribute to your units and circles and encourage everyone to attend. Let’s make this an annual part of our program planning and events. So come renew long-time acquaintances and make some new connections with women of faith. At Covenant UMC, this will take the place of our monthly meeting.

If you have any questions or suggestions, you may also call me at 505-823-2357.

See you at St. John’s in Santa Fe on the 25th of April.

Kathy Byrd

From District Treasurer, Alice Fenton

Greetings to all unit treasurers. I will be sending you the remaining receipts for your giving for 2008. If you find any errors or have any questions, please contact me. Please notify me if you have a new treasurer for your unit.

Thank you for your promptness in getting your reports to me by the November deadline. And thanks for sending your unit’s budget. If you haven’t sent me your budget yet, I would still welcome one.

I have Gift to Mission cards (birthday, congratulations, baby, etc.) on hand, so if you need any, I’ll send them.

There is a new handbook for the next quadrennial recently published. Everything is combined into one book now. Be sure your unit has several for your officers. They are available from the Mission Resource Center at www.missionresourcecenter.org. The new District Directory that was sent to each unit has a wealth of information in it.. Have your president share the information with your unit.

Remember, if you need Remittance forms, you can make copies (from the Handbook), contact me and I’ll send you some, or download them from the web at http://gbgm-umc.org/umw/finance. There’s other information on this website besides the forms.

The first quarterly report for 2009 is due to me by February 28. Due dates for other quarters are May 31, August 31 and November 30, 2009

I want all of the units to know that Central UMW in Albuquerque received the 5-Star Award for giving in all 5 areas of mission giving: pledge (increase over last year by at least $1), Special Mission Recognition, Gift to Mission, Gift in Memory and World Thank Offering. Central was accidentally omitted from the recognition at the Conference Annual Meeting in El Paso.

If your unit has a new way to earn mission money, share it with me. I can then add it to my article for the next newsletter, then all the units can have new ideas to work with.

Stay connected to each other—we can learn and grow together as individuals and as United Methodist Women.

When ordering Special Membership Recognition pins for this year, plan ahead and try to get them ordered by September, because after September it will take longer for you to receive them.

Please contact me if you have questions or if there is any way I can be of help to your unit.

 Alice Fenton, 5435 Highway 64, Farmington, NM 87401, (505) 325-8469, [email protected].

Spiritual Growth

As the new year begins, I decided that I would not make resolutions but that I would continue to work toward goals I have set for myself. These no doubt will take more than one year to accomplish but seem to come to mind quite often.  One of these is to keep growing in my spiritual life and do a better job of sharing it with others.  Jesus calls us daily to his work and servant hood.  Do I need to spend more time listening in prayer as well and petitioning?

YES! Do I need to read more inspirational books and articles - YES!

Do I need to spend more time in the Scriptures? YES!  Do I share my need with others?  I could do a lot better.  Do I share my love for Christ with others? I am trying to do better.  Isn't this what Jesus wants for all of us?  Won't you join me in my goals and let us pray for one another.

One goal this year for UMW in our district is to plan a 'Day Apart' this coming summer. It will be held in a central location to as many as possible. June 13th is the date. More information will be forthcoming.

Please save the date now and join us for a special day.

Mission Today Unit

The new United Methodist Women Handbooks are out and there have been some changes in the requirements to become a “Mission Today Unit.” The new forms should have the words “Revised 2009” at the bottom. This is how you know that the Mission Education and Interpretation Coordinators are using the newest form. As you study this new form you will notice several changes. One in particular is that there are no longer three levels (Gold, Silver, or Bronze) of accomplishment – there is only one. You will either be a “Mission Today Unit” or you will not. Most of the units will benefit from the streamlining. You all work very hard at the goals each year. These guidelines enable you to energize your UMW to be more involved in mission through prayer, study and action. It increases contacts between Units and mission personnel and mission projects so that United Methodist Women understand where their money goes. It encourages use of mission resources through United Methodist Women, and expands concepts of mission, including social justice as mission. You do so many of these that I hope that the new requirements will allow you to recognize your hard work and be congratulated for it.

Conference Mission E & I Coordinator

“Make A Difference Day 2008

Remember the old song: “What a Difference A Day Makes”? You made a difference in many lives last October when we all, or most of us, took a day to share with others our blessings.

Such great ideas to make a warm fuzzy or a smile on a face for both the giver and receiver. Imagine how daycare workers felt being remembered with lunch! A call to a shut-in daily, delivering lap robes and blankets to Amigos del Valle members, be responsible for members getting to church and Sunday school, sitting with a neighbor to give caretakers a break, delivering children’s books to preschool and the list goes on.

We know it is more blessed to give than to receive. Let us receive that gift of love through out every day of this year

Bette Gorton

Social Action Coordinator

Program Resources, February 2009

We will have a program resources table (or two) at the Annual meeting at Saint John’s in Santa Fe in April. This is a good opportunity to get the study books for this summer’s school of mission, our new handbook (sorry I did not have enough for all of you who wanted it in October), and other books from the reading program. If you have particular books or resources that you want to save postage and pick up in Santa Fe in April, please contact me before March 27. The Mission Resource Center uses the most economical way of shipping these orders, sometimes media mail takes several weeks to arrive.

A short description of the books in the 2009 reading program is at

http://new.gbgm-umc.org/umw/media/pdf%20files/2009readingprogramcatalog1117.pdf

 and the 2008 books

http://new.gbgm-umc.org/umw/media/pdf%20files/2008%20RProgram.pdf

Remember that you can get credit for reading books from the 2004 through 2009 reading program lists. To get credit for your reading program reading you need to submit for each person the list of books read. This form is available online at http://www.missionresourcecenter.org/wdstore/resources/YourReadingProgram.pdf

or call or email me to get copies. I will have copies at St. John’s in April. The information needed for the form: Your name and address, local unit name (church), district and conference (we can fill that in), the level of the Reading Program you are seeking credit for, and the names of books you have read in each area.
