THE MUSTARD SEED

Albuquerque District of the United Methodist Women

August, 2006

District Officers,Unit Presidents, Members,

The summer heat surrounds us, but fall is closer each day. How time flies as one matures!(Nothing about getting older intimated, of course.) The new season of work, service and praise begins for our District Units. May it be a productive time as we continue to reach out to others in our communities and across our world.

Election of officers is a priority for units, of course. Using the form/copy from the Mustard Seed please get your officer list to our Directory Secretary Diann Zentner [email protected] by e-mail or snail mail as soon as possible. Either Debbie Nicholson or I will be able to e-mail the form to you if that will help in accomplishing this.

The program committee must also be working together to provide meaningful and challenging programs for your unit. Gather local resources along with information from the District Vice-president Marilyn Jacobson who urges the use of the Program Book, Response Magazine, and New World Outlook to vary your programs and involve members to the maximum possible. Our focus should be on Mission both locally and far afield... Plan on having variety in your programming this year, and invite, invite, invite and transport others to our meetings. Search for follow-up activities of different depths for your programs to allow learning opportunities to have a personal connection to each member. Being informed and involved is our obligation as Methodist Women.

Personally, it was an exciting event to entertain Dr. Catherine Akala from Camaroon as she returned from Assembly across the Southwest seeking help for her Mission in her home country and beyond, searching for means and methods to assist women to learn and gain skills in tasks which might better their lives by earning funds for themselves and their families. So many of our talented women devote their entire lives to helping others. What an opportunity it is to support their valiant efforts in our own communities and around the world as they work in United Methodist assigned tasks. Catherine spoke of attending a Presbyterian Secondary School and of her current work to create local ecumenical groups among Protestant women in that primarily Islamic country. So many lessons were learned from her gracious manner, her intelligent words and her faith driven energy as she approached the task here of raising funds for sewing machines and other materials to help women in Africa. Her Mission Personnel Advance Special # is 13951Z.Another who works at missions says, Teaching men to earn funds is helpful, but raising the level of a womans income immediately results in children of her family gaining weight . Women have such impact on families. And teachers like Catherine have an impact on women. Let us continue to support them in mission, replacing Undesignated Giving with the new term Mission Giving.

The Albuquerque District is organizing a work team to McCurdy SchoolSeptember 5-8. A registration form is included in this issue by Bette Gorton, District Social Action Coordinator. Read her column for details on joining us for this great opportunity to interact with the students who will be on site. Do come be a part of this mission work.

New Mexico Conference United Methodist Women led by President Jane Perry will meet at St. Johns United Methodist Church in Albuquerque October 20-21, 2006.

The Albuquerque District members are hostesses for the event. Most units have been contacted and requested to do various tasks related to welcoming and entertaining the guests from throughout the Conference. Your help is needed and much appreciated. Do urge all available members to participate in this time of work and worship with women of our area and faith. The ABQ District officers and members at School of Missions were given the gift of choosing the Womens Division program in our District to which funds (40%) will be given from the collection and for whom items will be collected during Conference time.McCurdy was selected: look for the list of needs in this issue.

District Suppers will be hosted by Asbury United Methodist Women, Covenant United Methodist Women and Central United Methodist Women. We want to see ALL of you for this time together to re-energize ourselves for the new year.

Please contact me for a visit from a District Officer Team with suggestions about a program to fit your needs.

Beep from the VP

Wow, summer is moving right along and the year is more than half completed.  Hope your units have been enjoying the break from meetings and are beginning to look towards the fall routine.

Keep in mind the Conference Annual Meeting in October and if your unit has a unique or fun project to raise money for mission giving, let Helen Jo Satterwhite know so you can share it with those attending the Annual Meeting.  Remember what seems mundane to you, may be a totally new idea for some other unit.

Soon it will be time for brain storming and program planning for the 2007 year. If your unit had an especially well received program or project, let me know what it was and I'll share it with other units who may be looking for new and different ideas for 07.

I haven't been in touch with many units this year but if any of you want help, have questions or ideas, please contact me and I'll do my best to help or get information for you.  Looking forward to seeing you at Annual meeting in October, I remain One of His,

 ï¿½ï¿½ï¿½ï¿½ï¿½ï¿½ï¿½ï¿½ï¿½ï¿½ï¿½ï¿½ï¿½ï¿½ï¿½ï¿½ï¿½ï¿½ï¿½ï¿½ï¿½ï¿½ï¿½ï¿½ï¿½ï¿½ï¿½

Mission Today Units

They say that travel broadens you. I believe that is true. Whether it is in the physical sense - rich foods, restaurants, sumptuous desserts and room service, or learning about other cultures, visiting other parts of our country, and witnessing how other people live, you are broadened. When your units work toward your Mission Today levels, you are broadening your Mission awareness. If you use your Prayer Calendar regularly, you will learn about real missionaries and programs which you raise money to support. The Program Book, Conference School of Christian Mission, and "Response" magazine all work together to expand your knowledge of mission work. The more things you can check off on the form, the higher your unit's award level will be. Also, the more things you check off, the more you will have learned about missions, both foreign and local. This year, several units didn't turn in a form. I know you have worked hard and participated in many of the requirements on the Mission Today forms. A lot of you attended Mission Studies or held one at your church. Please remember to report these activities by June 15th each year to the District Mission Education and Interpretation Coordinator. This is important, not just because of a certificate that will be awarded at the Annual Conference Meeting, but so that we may share the knowledge we have learned with each other. The Albuquerque District has several Silver Units and and number of Bronze Units this year. We still have no Gold Units. I know you are out there and I know you are working hard. Share the information with us.

PROGRAM RESOURCES COORDINATOR

Thank you to all the units who participated in the 2006 Reading Program and submitted a report by the end of June. Nominations Committee

At the Albuquerque District meeting in April, 2006, one member of the nominating committee was not elected so that leaves the committee with one member short.

Some of the members that continued in office finish their tenure in that office or can be reelected for another two years (Such as Vice President, Program Resources, Mission Coordinator for Education and Interpretation, etc)

It takes a whole organization to make that organization efficient. If anyone has suggestions of names for future officers those names can be given to me for the talent bank. It would be appreciated.

If you know of anyone who likes scrap booking and would like to be the historian contact Barb Trautlein at btrautlein@hotmailcom

MEMBERSHIP, NURTURE, AND OUTREACH

The time of the year is approaching for the MEMBERSHIP COUNT that will be reported to the Womens Division and the pastor of your local church. Your membership count should be included in your local churchs Charge Conference Report in a process that is determined by your pastor. The President of each unit will receive a document that must be returned to Anita Y. Spain, Albuquerque District Membership, Nurture and Outreach Coordinator. THE DEADLINE FOR THE RETURN OF THIS DOCUMENT IS NOVEMBER 30, 2006. The units in the Albuquerque District usually elect their officers before November so that an easy transition occurs before January 1, 2007. This is a great time to review the status of each person in your unit.

Please review the GUIDELINES FOR COUNTING MEMBERSHIP located on page 84-85 in the United Methodist Women Handbook for Local and District Units.

Remember that no woman can be removed from your rolls except under three situations:
a) Personal request;
b) Relocation to another church and transfer of Membership to that unit or;
c) Death.

The Albuquerque District Report will be sent to Womens Division, President of the New Mexico United Methodist Womens Conference, Albuquerque District President, and the New Mexico Conference Membership, Nurture and Outreach Coordinator.

My Goal is to complete the document before the Christmas Holidays. Please complete the document as efficiently as possible so that time and money will not have to be spent on personal calls to your unit.

SPIRITUAL GROWTH

Greetings to all our UMW units - as you are busy  'revving up' for the fall,  remember to include our new spiritual growth study, Peace, Shalom. Saalam in your schedule.  It is such a valuable study and challenging to us as we face such an uncertain world situation.  Many of us have just returned from the School of Christian Missions at Sacramento Assembly this past weekend and were so inspired by the presentation of this study..  Peace always must start in our own hearts and then we can work in our communities to seek understanding and acceptance of those who think differently .  In September, Jane Perry will give a study at St. John's UMC in Albuquerque.  Look for information sent to each unit. If you do not have time for an indepth study, consider possibly including some of the study in your monthly devotions all through the year.  Consider too, including the prayer calendar at each meeting and pray for peace for all of our mission people in far away places.  Blessings to you all for a wonderful growth in fellowship, study and prayer.

Margrace Grotefend,

Spiritual Growth coordinator

Spiritual Growth Study

Albuquerque St. John's United Methodist Women will host the Spiritual Growth study, "Shalom, Salaam, Peace," on Thursday, September 14, 2006, and we invite you to join us.  Jane Perry will be the study leader.

The meeting will be held in the Family Life Center at the northeast corner of the church.  Registration and coffee fellowship will begin at 8:30, and the hours for the study will be 9:30 - 3:00.  Lunch will be prepared by our excellent chef, Gil Stewart.  Cost is $8.00 -- $7.00 for lunch and $1.00 for supplies.  We need your reservations by Friday, September 8, especially your lunch reservations.

Phoenix Avenue on the north side of the church may be closed for installation of a huge water line, but signs will direct you to parking and access.  We do hope you will join us in this timely and much needed study.

The name for United Methodist Womens basic financial giving has been changed from undesignated giving to MISSION GIVING. The new name says what United Methodist Women is about MISSION- and what makes that possible GIVING.

Our challenge for 2006 is to increase Mission Giving through Special Mission Recognition. Present Special Mission Recognition to those who are committed to mission in your district or local church. They make great birthday gifts, graduation and Christmas presents. They can be a way to say Thank You to friends, family members, pastors, teachers and others. They can be given by individuals or groups.

Mustard Seed article

July 29, 2006

Dear Treasurers,

I am your new District Treasurer. Send all your remittances to me instead of to Debbie Nicholson. Debbie was an excellent treasurer, and she was very helpful in instructing me. I pray that I will be able to do the job as well as she did.

Do you know the due dates for your quarterly reports? They are not at the end of each quarter as suspected, but one month prior to the normal quarters end. That is, please send me your reports by the last day of February, May, August and November. This is to allow time for me to gather all the reports into my report to the Conference Treasurer who then sends in her report by the end of the quarter. The November 30 deadline is very important. Money that is sent to me after that date may not be included in that years report to the District. Of course, your money will be credited to the next years report.

Mission giving is very important in United Methodist Women. Its part of our purpose and one of the reasons that United Methodist Women is so important to me. It gives me a reason to belong and to give. So many projects around the world benefit from the money given through United Methodist Women. To help your unit make its Pledge to Mission each year, try uplifting a national or world project as part of your Unit or circle programs. Knowing about the places and the people who benefit, makes them real to us, and we are moved to help. If any unit would like me to come do a program for them, just let me know.

If you have questions, give me a call. You can also refer to the Handbooks, especially the Financial Handbook, the first half of which is for local treasurers. All the handbooks are available through the Service Center.
