THE MUSTARD SEED

Albuquerque District of the United Methodist Women

                                             August, 2008

                                       Message from the President

School of Christian Mission: We have just completed another inspiring and educational School of Christian Mission at Sacramento. Our own Carol Turman along with Ellen Lipsey planned an outstanding event with Betty Jo Nye serving as Registrar. Our leaders taught in a way that will help us to lead the studies if that should be in our unit plans. There were 91 attending; the offering was $758.25 which is split 60% for mission giving and 40% for the Navajo United Methodist Center. The four teenage girls bused the tables for tips. With some challenge contributions, they made $1017.46 which was split evenly between mission giving and the Camp project of floor refurbishing in some of the buildings. Next year’s dates are July 17 – 20, 2009. Mark your calendar. You will find it a great blessing!

Goals of the Albuquerque District UMW: Each year the Albuquerque District adopts goals for the year for us all to work toward. Here are the goals chosen by those at our district meeting at Sacramento:

1.Visiting local units by district officers to nurture membership, going two by two,

2.Working toward some effort for environmental advocacy, chosen unit by unit, such as recycling, reduced use of plastic, non-use of bottled water,

3.Observing “Make a Difference Day” in our units and individually,

4.*Supporting the UMW District Mission project: playground equipment for Covenant Education Center in Shiprock ($6000),

5. Coupling the annual District Book Fair with St. John’s, ABQ, study “I Believe in Jesus,” Oct. 2. (We are urged to visit the book fair whether or not we can attend the study.) ,

6.Encouraging attendance at Conference and District events and studies through invitation and carpooling.

*The Covenant Education Center is part of the Four Corners Native American Ministry. It serves some 85 children. Shade trees have been planted this year in the newly fenced playground, but there is no playground equipment and no funds for it since this is an entirely faith-based ministry. Our district UMW voted to work in our units using special events and projects to contribute $6000 to this cause.

New Officers in Our Units: This is the time of year for new officers to be selected for the coming year. Please convene your nominating committees and prayerfully select officers for your unit. By October 1, please send your slate of officers to Dana Underwood, 1412 Stone Canyon Rd. NE, ABQ, NM 87113. Also the name and address of the president and the secretary are to be sent to the Resource Center in Dallas: 1221 Profit Dr., Dallas, TX 75247 or www.missionresourcecenter.org.

District Book Fair: We like to have the study books, reading program books and new materials available for you at a book fair each year, but we needed to boost its usage. St. John’s, ABQ, made the book fair welcome on the day of its study “I Believe in Jesus,” on October 2. This is a great opportunity to look over materials and avoid the shipping costs and hassle of ordering. So take advantage of this opportunity-- and attend the study, too, if you can.

Study “Giving Our Hearts Away” at Central UMC: We are also invited to attend the study on two Thursdays at Central UMC, September 11 and October 9, as well as other studies that will be held at other churches throughout the year. The Central study will be led by Jo Reed and Lois Stanton.

New Mexico Conference Annual Meeting: Let’s begin to talk about a trip to El Paso for the Annual Meeting of the Conference UMW. The place and date are Western Hills United Methodist Church on Octorber 24-25, 2008. Find the registration form on another page of the Mustard Seed. All of our gatherings are great times of worship, renewal and affirming our work in UMW. Talk to one another. We can carpool.

Hosting the Conference Annual Meeting in 2009 will be the opportunity for the Albuquerque District.

 President’s message continued

Central United Methodist Women have very graciously agreed to host this meeting at their church, which is a very large undertaking. Each of the district units will be asked to help in a tangible way. Be watching for your assignment in the February Mustard Seed!

We have received a page of suggestions to help us in reaching out to our less involved members. Please peruse it for some assistance to your unit.

Through many telephone calls, we have learned some officer and email changes that have been made since the District Directory was published last December. Make use of the information when you need to contact other units.

Unit Visits: The District Officers would like to visit your unit just to make connection, get acquainted, and share any information that would help. The following list shows our assigned units, but we are hoping to come with another district officer or a friend from our own unit:

WORKING WITH “INACTIVE” MEMBERS

THE ISSUES:

·    Membership rolls may be inflated.

·    No woman can be removed unless she specifically asks to be removed.

·    Some members have dropped out of the local church and we do not know how to contact them.

·    Membership rolls contain names of women who do not participate in any way and have not for many years (not just elderly women who may no longer be able to participate).

·    Some districts “assess” each unit a dollar figure per member for Administrative & Membership Development (A&MD). What about women who are still on the rolls, but never participate?

·    RESPONSE:

·    There are no easy answers. There are frustrations when we realize that there are those that understand their membership differently than we might – or when there is “work to be done” and too frequently it is carried out by a few. On the other hand, how one perceives their membership and relationship to UMW can be complex and highly personal and may be best left to that member’s discretion. Here are some suggestions for local units:

·    In following up on “inactive” members, try pursuing information through the local church as well – the local congregation may have transfer information or be able to provide some insight on the individual’s church relationships. (In other words “inactivity” is also a church question as well as a UMW question.)

·    We need to follow up on “inactivity” immediately. Whenever anyone doesn’t come to a meeting or two, they should be contacted at that time in order to nurture and support them (as a creative supportive fellowship). Such nurturing will relieve the end of the year sorting through the rolls and wondering what happened to someone.

·    Members might want to join the “Membership Development” online community to share ideas about addressing this issue and participate in other related discussions. <http://www.umwonline.org>

·    Any change or additions on membership in the Constitution and By-laws can be proposed by any member or unit of the organization for consideration by the Board of Directors of the Women’s Division.

·    From the Women’s Division perspective there is no connection that “members” equates to some “payment.” There may be a “dues” perspective in the unit – and/or the conference or district may have some per member assessment for some cause. The pledge is not a “payment” to the unit/district/conference…rather, it is an offering. The district A&MD budget comes through the conference A&MD. Hence there should not be a need for assessments that impacts how many women are “on the roll.”

REMEMBER:

Membership shall be open to any woman who indicates her desire to belong and to participate in the global mission of the Church through United Methodist Women. Being a member of the United Methodist Church is not required nor is there any minimum age requirement. Out of a commitment for mission locally and globally with women, children and youth, United Methodist Women choose to participate in meetings, prayer, financial giving, study, action and service

Vice-President Message

It is very hard to believe, but our year is 2/3 over and school is starting in the next several weeks. This means it is time to rededicate ourselves to our local UMW units and to gear up for an exciting year of programs.

Vice-Presidents are in charge of planning and arranging for programs, but that doesn’t you can’t seek help from your members or even a committee. Everyone seems to despair when the words program planning are mentioned, but we have many sources available to us.

We have our reading program, our conference missions, and many local people in the mission field who might be available as speakers. Dr. Pomeroy, the retired superintendent of McCurdy lives in Los Lunas. Dr. Garcia, the new superintendent, is at McCurdy. They would be delighted to share the story of McCurdy.

Rev. Paul and Dorcas West are in the Farmington area, as are some of our Navajo sisters who are willing to share their experiences. If you know of others, please share them with me, so I can pass on this information in this column to all of our units.

Another idea, would be to invite your youth mission group to a meeting to share their experiences from their work during the summer.

We have many available sources; let’s take advantage of them and generate some program excitement in our units and circles. I am looking forward to serving the Albuquerque District as your Vice President. My e-mail is [email protected] and my phone number is 505-823-2357. My address is 7505 Jemez St NE, Albuquerque, NM 87109. Please contact me for information or assistance.

Albuquerque District

To Unit Treasurers,

Your third quarterly report is due to me by August 31. As you complete your elections for the new year next month, send me the name and all contact information for new treasurers. I’ll get the information in the District directory, but it will be delayed.

The work of the Lord can be tiring or difficult at times—we as United Methodist Women know that what we do affects the lives of those around us and eventually the world. As treasurers, our work can be hard when we fall short of financial goals—what we want to give to expand concepts of mission. This may be doubly difficult for new treasurers.

I would like to inspire you to continue trying by giving you some examples of fundraisers. Perhaps your unit can try out some of these ideas or expand on them.

·    Bake sale once a month at church and ask for donations

·    Silent auction of collectible treasurers (one unit was hoping for $600, but raised $1900)

·    Chocolate fair, or other food ideas

·    Sell cook books, inspirational items, cards, hand made jewelry, etc.

I’m not good at inspiring—but just being friendly and encouraging and positive and creative sometimes gets results, more than being pessimistic and saying “our ladies can’t or won’t do that”.

To new treasurers and reminders to continuing treasurers – money your unit gives to mission is sent through the District Treasurer—that way you will receive credit for the giving and can possibly win a 5-Star award. The 5 areas of giving are missions giving, Special Mission Recognition, World Thank Offering, Gift to Mission (cards), and Gift in Memory. Give in each of the 5 areas and increase your mission giving by at least $1 over last year. Occasionally, your unit may wish to give money to a local project that is not part of United Methodist Women. You can send that money directly and not through me. The best way to set up your giving is quarterly—so send your report to me by Feb 28, May 31, Aug 31 and Nov 30. Our Conference treasurer needs to send in her report by the end of the regular quarter; therefore; I need to send my report to her before that. Report forms are in the handbook or on line at http://gbgm-umc.org/umw/fintools.cfm or you can get to it (although it looks different and there’s less info) from main page: http://gbgm-umc.org/umw, then click on Where $ Goes, then click giving, then donation forms or contact me and I can send you some.

Mission money goes to projects around the nation and world as well as New Mexico – like McCurdy School in Española, and Navajo United Methodist Center in Farmington. Some projects in the world would not have any financial help except for funds from United Methodist Women.

Your personal pledges and your unit fundraisers can go toward your unit budget. Your unit makes a pledge to the District. Generally, most units have a pledge service in Nov or Dec where members prayerfully make a personal pledge as to what they will give. For myself, I have grown in the Lord by these pledge services and have been led to give more over the years. I know what I give won’t even make a dent into the needs of the world, but together with my unit and district and conference, the money can make a difference in the lives of people. Projects across the nation and world receive the love of God through the gifts of the children of God—you and me.

I would be happy to come to your unit to give a program or to answer questions; just contact me

Yours in Christ,

Alice Fenton, District Treasurer

MISSION EDUCATION & INTERPRETATION

A BIG THANK YOU to all units in the Albuquerque district for sending me their Mission Study Recognition forms and Mission Today reports on time this year! By doing so, you in turn help to provide sufficient time for me to work in tabulating them and sending in my report on time to my conference counterpart! Keep up the good work!

The 2008-2009 Mission Study Themes are:

   Spiritual Growth----“I Believe in Jesus”

   Geographic-----------“Israel/Palestine” (2nd year)

   General issue---------“Giving Our Hearts Away:

                                        Native American Survival”

Those of you who were able to attend the Conference School of Christian Mission in July at Sacramento Assembly will undoubtedly be able to lead or make plans to promote these studies in your units/churches. We are indeed fortunate to have the Four Corners Native American Ministry located in our own district who will be happy to provide helpful resourcing with speakers, videos or other materials regarding their ministries. Rev. Paul West led the General Issue study at Sacramento. Contact him at (505) 368-4402 or write to him at: P. O. Box 400 Shiprock, NM 87420. He’ll be glad to help you out or give helpful references of persons you may contact.

On October 2, 2008, St. John’s UMC in Albuquerque will host the district-wide Spiritual Growth study “I believe in Jesus”. Attendance at these district events do count towards your credits and can be included in your report forms you send me in June. Encourage your women to attend and notify St. John’s how many to expect from your units.

Also, make note of these: The directors of Women’s Division, at their spring 2008 meeting, approved that the Spiritual Growth Study Themes for 2011-2012 be “Coming Out on the Side of Grace: Reconciliation”, and for 2012-2013 “Living Sacramentally and walking Justly”.Women’s Division (the national policy-making board for United Methodist Women) continues to amaze us with such forward-looking strategies to whet our intellectual/emotional/spiritual appetites and to give us much to look forward to.

If I can be of further help to you, please do not hesitate to contact me: 382 Nicklaus Drive SE, Rio Rancho, NM 87124 or (505) 891-0526.

Grace and Peace to you!

Program Resources, August 2008

District Book Fair with a New Time, New Place

Thursday, October 2, 2008 at St. John’s UMC in Albuquerque, starting at 8:30 am. The St John’s UMW will be holding their Mission Study that day so you can take advantage of both the day’s events. If you can’t do both, take the opportunity to come to the fair. Signs will direct you from the study registration. Resources available will include: program books, the new 2009 Prayer Calendar, a great new combined Handbook for United Methodist Women in notebook form so you can hand the parts around to the various officers in your unit, and selections from the new Reading Program list. This is a great way to actually take a look at the offerings first hand and save postage in the bargain!

Let me encourage you to purchase and use the Prayer Calendar, featuring children’s artwork from around the world. In it all of the missionaries and deaconesses and our mission projects are listed for your prayer throughout the year. Taking the time to use it at our meetings keeps us aware of God’s work all around the world supported through our giving, and space is allotted for your listing of prayer concerns. At the end of the year you can look back and see the results of your prayers.

Note that you will also be able to download the New UMW Handbook online in August as it becomes available. Check out: http://new.gbgm-umc.org/umw/ for more information. The resources tab has much to offer including program ideas and a new online community. The list for the Reading Program is now available as a PDF at http://new.gbgm-umc.org/umw/resources/reading-program/. As of August 1 it was still the 2008 list but should be updated by the end of the month to the 2009 list.

Thanks to all the units who reported for the 2008 Reading Program. I’m sure the total would have been higher if I had made an effort to contact all the units earlier, but we had nearly a hundred women reported as particpating. If you have any questions about Program Resources, you can reach me at (505)856-1926 or [email protected].

Message from Jane Perry, UMW NM Conference

Some of you may have already read this article in the Word Sower, but I think the message is important enough to repeat in order for others to read it.  It is vital that we make recruiting new members of UMW a priority in every unit.  We need to broaden our horizons and double our effort in order to include all who might be interested, thereby enriching our membership in ways we haven't even imagined.

I’m in one of my favorite places—sitting in front of Skipper Hall watching the ducks and the fountain in the pond. The setting sun is behind a cloud just above the mountain.

God’s wonderful work is everywhere!

The end of the 2008 School of Christian Mission is fast approaching—a week-end of fellowship, education, inspiration, sharing, planning, exercise, golf cart rides, renewal and a lot of good food. The weather has been absolutely perfect.

Mattie came and brought three friends. They helped me deliver a message that I’d like to share with you. Of course, some of you have already heard it—straight from “The Ladies.”

It is essential that we make a big effort to bring new members to United Methodist Women. There is no “standard” United Methodist woman; this is what mattie, Lily, Annabelle and Winnie wanted to make quite clear. We all represent different ages, interests, abilities, experiences and appearances. Every woman has something to offer to all of the rest of us. We need to work around our differences and celebrate our similarities, especially our desire to concentrate on the needs of women and children everywhere. Programs and circles may very well operate in a different manner than the way we’ve always done it”; that will be a good thing, as well as continuing the old ways. The key word is “adapt”—to all of our differences. Instead of worrying about the right or wrong way to do things, we need to focus on the end results—again, the needs of women and children. In the process we will meet and come to love new interesting women, adding to our supportive community.

Make it a priority to invite someone new to UMW at every opportunity.

In His Service,

Jane Perry

Mission Candle

For 2008, a “mission minutes” costs $31.14. A form is included for your submissions for the mission candle. You can also give money to the “mission candle” without giving in memory or in honor of an individual. Any money and forms not received by October 10 will not be included on the handout at Conference Annual Meeting. There will be a list posted at the registration desk of those received after the deadline. Their names will NOT be read during the meeting. Remember to mail your forms by October 5 in order for them to reach the District Treasurer and the Candle Coordinator by October 20.

ALERT! WARNING! ALERT!

The owners of any cell phones that ring during the Annual Meeting (business portion) will be asked to contribute $5.00 to the World Thank Offering. Be sure to turn up the volume on your cell phone when you enter the meeting so that we will be able to find you when it rings.

Spiritual Growth Letter

Greetings to you all !  As the summer months fly by much too quickly , I pray that you have found some time to slow down and make time for your own spiritual growth journey.  I have just finished reading the "Power of Simple Prayer " by Joyce Meyer.  What an inspiration she is and such a

talent for sharing her own struggles and successes in growing her prayer life.  I have given it to another member in our UMW unit and she will share it with us at a fall meeting.  I do hope you will include a spiritual growth program in your schedule some time this next year.  On the district level, we hope to plan a 'time apart' day this next year.  As you plan a local project to get involved in, keep it in your prayers and watch it unfold as God wishes it to be!! Blessings to each of you as you begin your fall meetings!

Each local unit is encouraged to donate at least one item. Individuals may also donate items. In the past items that have gone well are home made bakery items, home made jams and jelly, candy, and all kinds of craft items. Anything you bring will be accepted.
