AUGUST 3. 2002

We departed for the day from Seward for an all day boat trip through Resurrection Bay into Kenai Fjords National Park.  The weather was gray and misty, and the clouds lay like cotton batting on top of the hills.  Although we didn't have a clear view of the mountains, the misty weather gave a beauty of its own to the scenery.

Our boat tour by Kenai Fjord Tours included a stop at Fox Island for a delicious salmon barbecue. Here I am enjoying the misty view during our visit at the island.

The day was rather foggy to get a clear view of Holgate Glacier.

At one point our boat was surrounded by a "super pod" of at least 20 orca whales.  There were whales on every side of the boat!  We sat for at least 20 minutes watching the whales surface and spout!  What a thrill!  We also got to see a humpback whale.

Watch a whale movie (requires Quicktime)

Whales were not the only wildlife we saw.  Several times we passed rocks where Stellar sea lions or harbor seals were lounging.

The water were filled with all kinds of sea birds swimming, flying, and diving.  My favorites were the puffins.  Most of them stay on the water, but here are two that posed nicely on the rocks.
