AUGUST 3, 2002

During the morning we entered gorgeous Glacier Bay National Park.

In the mid 1700s, when Glacier Bay was discovered, it was one barely indented glacier entering into Icy Straight.  Over the past 200 years the glacier has retreated over 70  miles up into Glacier Bay.  Today numerous beautiful glaciers flow down to the water.

Learn more about the glaciers in Glacier Bay.

In the late morning the boat drew close to the stunning Margerie Glacier, as well as the more dirty looking Grand Pacific Glacier.

This is Lamplough Glacier.  The blue color is formed from densely packed ice crystals.

We hoped to see the glacier calfing.  "Calfing" is when a chunk of the glacier falls into the water.  It makes a huge sound when it cracks and crashes into the water. You have to be fast with your camera to catch the action!
