EAGLES
Almost every day that we were near water we saw bald eagles. We got to be rather adept at spotting their white heads against the dark green trees. This eagle was along the water in Kenai Fjords. |
PUFFINS
When we visited Maine a few years ago we went on a Puffin Watch Cruise and saw only a view streaks across the sky that the guide told us were puffins. I was so excited when I realized that many of the birds floating in the water in Kenai Fjords were puffins! We saw both horned and tufted puffins. It was fun to watch them swim and then fly off when the boat got too near. We also saw more puffins on our way to Halibut Cove. |
SALMON
In Ketchikan we were walking near the river when we suddenly noticed the salmon were running upstream. Periodically we could observe them jumping out of the water. Here the water was so clear we could see them swimming up the stream. Note the starfish on the rock as well. |
STELLAR
SEA LIONS
We saw stellar sea lions from the cruise boat as well
as in Kenai Fjords. The naturalist told us to look for "brown sausages"
sitting on the the rocks. These sea lions were in Kenai National
Park.

HARBOR SEALS
We saw at least a hundred sea lions floating on the ice in front of Harvard Glacier in College Fjord. These seals were in Kenai Fjords in a rocky area that was also home to hundreds of birds. |
